  1. Yea for Adam holding on to his approx $5K/week !

Better yet to see Adam still in the BB200. I wonder if his album will be able to stay there ’til the new albums drop this Fall?

  4. If Adam stays on the Billboard at least until late November (which I think he can do), he will have been on the Billboard 200 chart for a year. That will be pretty good if he does that.

  5. Glad to see Adam’s IIHU Remix at #67 on Itunes and despite all of Fantasia’s problem, happy to see her at #2.

  7. I guess it’s true, controversy/scandal sells. Fantasia certainly has a lot of songs on those lists.

  8. Nice to see Fantasia with a #2 album on iTunes. I hope it holds up and she has a kick ass opening week. And of course controversy helps. Anything that gets your name out there is key.

  9. This is Fantasia’s 3rd album, right? Does anyone remember what her 1st and 2nd albums sold in the 1st week?

  10. Nice that Adam is holding onto those 5K per week sales.

Look at the big jump for Daughtry’s albums. I wonder what is behind that?

  11. Brian M posted the album isales info for Danny in the comments section of his article (in reply to a fan’s query)

“He [Danny] sold 1,000, down 6% from the previous week. “

  12. This is Fantasia’s 3rd album, right? Does anyone remember what her 1st and 2nd albums sold in the 1st week?

First week sales of Fantasia’s albums:

    Debut album: 240,000
    Second album: 133,000

  13. Also before this album both of Fantasia’s albums were released during the holiday season.

    Free Yourself: 11/23/04
    Fantasia: 12/12/06

Free Yourself sold around 1.8 million and Fantasia the album sold over 502k through January 6 2008 according to Ken Barnes when he was still running Idol Chatter at USA Today.

  14. Billboard:

    • Eminem will likely relinquish the No. 1 position next week to Katy Perry’s new “Teenage Dream.” Released yesterday (Aug. 24), industry prognosticators suggest that the set will likely sell in the range of 170,000 to 200,000 by week’s end on Aug. 29. Beleaguered former “American Idol” champ Fantasia is seeking a big week too. Her third set, “Back to Me,” is on track for a sturdy No. 2 debut with a number in the range of 150,000 to 175,000.

GMA concert last Friday. I think it was GMA or it could have been the Today show, it was one of them.

  16. First week sales of Fantasia’s albums:

    Debut album: 240,000
    Second album: 133,000

I think that Fantasia might be able to sell 100,000 album sold, during the first week for this latest album. If she did that would be pretty good IMO, especially for a third album. Some Idols would be lucky to even get a third album with a major label, let alone sell that much in a week.

  17. Billboard:

That is pretty good for Fantasia, that is even more than my original guess. Katy might sell around the range I thought she would (200,000) or she could sell less than that.

  18. I’d LOL if Katy Perry missed out on #1 considering the relentless publicity based on the sexpot look and party girl songs over singing ability. It’d be a triumph of better talent but I don’t think the better talent would be triumphing if not for a horrible situation being milked for publicity, you take your pick by whom. All I have to say is I feel for the 3 innocent kids and hope the best for them.

  19. If those numbers hold up that’s an amazing first week of sales for Fantasia. Factor in the overall decline in album sales and the fact that nothing has a shorter shelf life than Idol fame and the numbers are even more amazing.

Basically it means that almost 7 years after her season she still has people interested in her music. I wasn’t into her season on Idol but now get why Simon, Paula and Randy always picked her as their favorite Idol winner.

  20. I think its great that Fantasia is going to do so well!! That vh1 reality show was a really smart move for her, got her back in peoples radar. I love her voice, gotta sample the album to decide whether to buy the whole thing or individual tracks. Reviews have been pretty good I think so far.

  21. If Fantasia sells anywhere around the predicted 150K that would be amazing. I don’t like the way she’s exploiting her personal life to help promote her music (not that she’s the 1st or the last to do this, of course), but she does seem to be very popular, so good for her.

  22. Not a fan of Fantasia’s personality, voice or singing style, but it is pretty amazing a third album is predicted to sell that big.

That is the type of music that is selling these days, so that is a huge boost for her.

  23. Faking suicide on aspirins looks like it was very smart, also! Look at all the publicity she received!

I wish her well with this album also. Despite the screwups with her personal life, I want her to succeed as a artist. I loved her during her season on Idol and I even bought her first album, which really wasn’t good. If the rest of the album is a good or better than bittersweet, then it will sell well. If it’s good, I will buy it.

  26. but she does seem to be very popular

haha but so is Jersey Shore LOL

  27. Faking suicide on aspirins looks like it was very smart, also! Look at all the publicity she received!

I think that she still might have ended up selling a good amount of albums like 100,000+ even if she didn’t get a lot of press for the bad things she’s doing right now.

I believe I saw somewhere that her reality show on VH-1, is the highest rated show on that channel. Plus she has recognition for during “The Color” Purple and her song “Bittersweet” is doing well on the Urban charts. Her last album was about four years ago, and it did produce a big hit “When I see You”.

And she did lose fans, for the stuff she’s doing right now.

what is going on with this — why isn’t it selling? iTunes

    #711 – Something ‘Bout Love

I think it’s not selling that much right now because David isn’t getting much radio airplay. He hasn’t cracked Top 50 on pop yet, and I don’t think his video has premiered on VH-1 or MTV yet. And I don’t think that he’s really gotten any national promotion for this song yet.

  28. Nice to see Fantasia with a #2 album on iTunes. I hope it holds up and she has a kick ass opening week. And of course controversy helps. Anything that gets your name out there is key.

I downloaded Fantasia’s album. Its her best album yet. It took 3, but I think they’ve finally found material worthy of her unique voice. I really hope it sells well for her.

but she does seem to be very popular

Fantasia is VERY popular. Especially in Urban communities. AI has no love for R&B artists. If you just looked at Idol boards you’d think she was a complete loser with no interest in her whatsoever. lol

  29. I hate the publicity angle that has been pursued with Fantasia’s album – and hate that it could be seen to have paid off.

That said, I’ve liked what I’ve heard of the songs on the album and she is a great singer…

  30. I wish her well with this album also. Despite the screwups with her personal life, I want her to succeed as a artist. I loved her during her season on Idol and I even bought her first album, which really wasn’t good. If the rest of the album is a good or better than bittersweet, then it will sell well.

I agree, with this. I don’t like the way she’s behaving right now and I do think that some of the stuff she is doing is wrong. But I still wish her well as an artist. She was one of my favorites during season 3, (Latoya London was my #1 fave from Season 3). and I think she’s talented.

Plus I do like some of the music she has put out since she’s been off Idol. Also she is apart of the Idol family and when one of the idols does well sometimes that can bode well for other idols.

  31. what is going on with this — why isn’t it selling?

    #711 – Something ‘Bout Love

I think it has to do with the limited airplay. Even though it is 52 on Pop, the audience is still only about 850,000. Kris has combined airplay of close to 5 million and up until the release of the video, the iTunes ranking for the Truth was in the 400’s. The label has chosen not pushing SBL at all on Hot AC. It is strange that the song is not even being played on Radio Disney which seems to play anything Idol related, especially by David.

On the plus side, this song is unlikely to peak prior to the album release as did Crush. It continues to get adds (9 adds this week, 7 pop), he has lots of radio promo lined up and the video was pretty popular, even without a MTV/VH1 premiere.

  32. Girlygirl, just like I’m sure you noticed with The Truth, sales and itunes rankings don’t go up until there’s a larger audience impression. SBL is increasing spins and AI, but theyre still very low. SBL doesn’t have the benefit of the video being on VH1 every morning or on the VH1 countdown and we’ve seen this last week with The Truth and earlier with IIHY How much those vh1 views help. Archie’s just starting his radio promo and Jim said his video would be on vh1 soon after editing out the product placement. I know you’re worried about Archie’s sales, but I think its really too early to worry much.

  34. I’ll have to remember this next time I want a raise at work.

That only works with celebrities because they are dealing with millions of fans and they can fool many of them. ‘Just a numbers game. In your case, the number is 1 — your boss! He or she is not likely to buy it! LOL

  35. the TT video definitly gave a boost to the single sales. But as said earlier, it’s only with the AI that it will take off. Hopefully they will increase

He doesn’t have the name recognition, where people are going to buy a song just because it’s from David Archuleta. Most people don’t even know who he is, or that he has a song out, and like with most songs, it won’t start selling until it gets more airplay. It’s nothing different than what Kris is going through with The Truth.

  37. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume that Fantasia’s recent bad publicity is what is driving her sales numbers right now. All I see is a lot of people on the interwebs calling her a skank ho and ghetto-trash. I don’t really give a crap about her personal life, but I do hope she finds a way to lift some of her burdens and straighten shit out.

I think her new cd is actually very good. That might be one reason people are buying it. Most of those Vh1 reality shows are nauseating, but people seem to be watching hers. She’s always been pretty popular on Urban radio as well. So, I think, regardless of recent events, Fantasia’s always had an audience.

  38. I found viewer numbers for the 1st season of Fantasia 4 Real on VH1. I bet the new season is going to be even higher. Source: Marc Berman of Mediaweek’s Programming Insider

The ratings for her Behind The Music special should be out by tonight.

  39. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume that Fantasia’s recent bad publicity is what is driving her sales numbers right now.

Exactly. Did people run around after the Avenged Sevenfold drop saying “the only reason it did such big numbers was because the Rev had an overdose and people were curious about the last songs he’d ever help write?” No, it’s because they had a fanbase, a fairly strong charting rock single, and some decent reviews.

With FB, it’s no different. Bittersweet was #1 on UAC and top 15 on Urban.

And the people who still insist on believing that she faked the attempt when not a single hospital employee or anyone else has come forward to suggest such a thing are still engaging in conspiracy theories. As per Conan Doyle, she’s been accused of both having too much imagination and too little.

the TT video definitly gave a boost to the single sales. But as said earlier, it’s only with the AI that it will take off. Hopefully they will increase

Very true. When the SBL video was released, the single climbed up to the 260s before coming back down to its present position.

  41. I wouldn’t assume the publicity is the reason for the strong album sales. She obviously has a strong fanbase and has been very successful with her previous albums. And Bittersweet is at the top of the Urban AC chart. The reviews for this album have also been very strong, so why wouldn’t it sell well?

But I AM highly skeptical of the timing of the alleged suicide attempt and all of the resulting publicity. Real or not, It does not look good when this stuff happens around the same time an album is scheduled to drop, your t.v. show is scheduled to premiere, etc.

  42. Yeah, Fanny has always been very popular in the R&B community, it’s just a world that is not talked about much on Idol boards.

Daughtry’s latest is STILL selling well. He never gets the credit for it he deserves IMO, but to still be moving as many albums as he does despite being pretty low profile this time around is quite impressive.

  43. That is the type of music that is selling these days,

Actually, it’s not. This is a straight R&B album, which like most genres, is being pushed out in favor of a fusion of pop/rhythmic and hip/hop. Fantasia has always made it clear that she doesn’t want to make music that is too poppy, and her biggest hits have always been strictly baseed in R&B/soul. Her biggest misstep with her last album was releasing a song that was more hip/hop than rhythm and blues.

  44. But I AM highly skeptical of the timing of the alleged suicide attempt and all of the resulting publicity. Real or not, It does not look good when this stuff happens around the same time an album is scheduled to drop, your t.v. show is scheduled to premiere, etc.

It also makes one suspicious when at every statment made about her personal problems is also followed by them pimping her album….from the very begining not even waiting till she was released from the hospital :/

  45. Fantasia’s type of music is not selling well these days so those album numbers are amazing (IF they hold up). And Daughtry’s second album has also done well especially because it hasn’t generated any Pop hits unlike the first. Ditto to whoever said it’s important for all Idols to do well. It really does help the Idol brand which is in pretty bad shape these days.

Fantasia, Carrie and Daughtry remind folks that people off Idol can show some career longevity and aren’t just flavors of the month whose fame fades when a new season rolls around.

  46. Fantasia’s last album barely went gold, so I don’t really think she is on the same tier as Carrie, Kelly and Daughtry. And her new album is selling this week only because of the drama- let’s not fool ourselves here. I do hear that her album is pretty good so only time will tell if it becomes a big seller.

  47. I think the publicity is helping Fantasia BUT it is a rare day in Idol world when any album does better than the previous one. So for Fantasia to have a better first week with her third album than her second is pretty amazing. Who knows if it’ll be a big seller but at least it’s having a decent first week.

And her new album is selling this week only because of the drama- let’s not fool ourselves here. I do hear that her album is pretty good so only time will tell if it becomes a big seller.

The last album barely went Gold because he label made a horrible choice for a debut single, the song just didn’t fit the style that radio expects from her. She also had to deal with a long run on Broadway, before her second single was released, but the album sales numbers that she got because of that single showed that she has an audience.

R&B listeners buy more albums than singles, so it’s not surprising that Fantasia, who has had one of the biggest R&B songs in the country for a few months, would do well during her debut week.

  49. I think the publicity is helping Fantasia BUT it is a rare day in Idol world when any album does better than the previous one.

I think being an r&b singer has removed Fantasia from the idol world. That’s not a genre that too many in the idol bubble keep up with. Also, Fantasia, even before the events of the last few weeks, had made a name for herself beyond just winning AI. Her last album may have barely gone Gold, but the second single set a couple of records on the Billboard r&b chart.

She might not put up the album or single numbers of Daughtry and Carrie, but like them, she’s broken out of the idol bubble, and made a name for herself as something more than a former American Idol contestant or winner.

  50. The last album barely went Gold because he label made a horrible choice for a debut single, the song just didn’t fit the style that radio expects from her.

Yeah, they TOTALLY screwed up her launch and misread her audience with that first song. But her second single from that album (When I See U) was a huge hit. I’m pretty sure it went number 1 on Urban and UAC, it was just too late to really help with album sales.

I don’t mean to harp on it, and I know its hard to explain if you are not into R&B, but Fantasia is a name in that world. She’s always done well touring, and that Color Purple run was very well received on top of it all. She really is one of the people with career longevity, even if its not “mainstream” (read: pop radio and mainstream press) longevity.

  51. R&B listeners buy more albums than singles, so it’s not surprising that Fantasia, who has had one of the biggest R&B songs in the country for a few months, would do well during her debut week.

Seriously. Sade’s Soldier of Love shifted gold in its first week, didn’t it? And again, that was off a fairly strong UAC/R&B (but not pop) single.

  52. I think that having a Platinum album, a gold second album, and first week album sales for a third estimated between 150,000-175,000 is very good. Not only for Fantasia, but in general. She is proving that she can sell a good amount of albums to a good sized audience, and she is showing she has some longevity.

IMO it is very good, when one of the idols can still put up numbers like this. Especially when album sales are not as good as they used to be.

  53. When single sale numbers are coming out? Usually we were getting them before album sale numbers..

  54. Nice increase in track sales for IIHY and September. Looks like WWFM might reach 1.5 million next week.

Based on iTunes chart position in comparison to a couple of the singles Brian did get #’s for, I’m guessing The Truth probably sold around 5K this past week

  55. Adam Lambert, If I Had You (42,000, +12%, 302,000 total)
    Carrie Underwood, Undo It (24,000, -13%, 752,000)
    Daughtry, September (14,000, +23%, 114,000)
Adam Lambert, Whatya Want From Me (12,000, -10%, 1.491 million)
Carrie Underwood, Cowboy Casanova (6,000, -7%, 1.463 million)
Carrie Underwood, Before He Cheats (4,000, -11%, 3.065 million)
    Carrie Underwood, Temporary Home (4,000, -6%, 570,00k0)
Kellie Pickler, Makin’ Me Fall in Love Again (4,000, -8%, 76,000)
    Carrie Underwood, All-American Girl (3,000, -3%, 1.251 million)

Yay Adam and Daughtry, nice increases!!!

  56. Great sales numbers for Adam. Good to see even WWFM is still selling well. I read on Pulse that IIHY made a 10 point leap to 32 on the BB Hot 100 too.

  58. I am pretty sure that WWFM will go over 1.5 million next week! And, in the not-so-distant future, five or six weeks, IIHY should get Gold!

  59. Congrats Adam on your second Top 40 hit!!! And cool that he is #3 with the remix of IIHY on the Dance single chart. I had not seen that. Go Adam!

  60. TT (#349) has passed LLWD (#350) on iTunes chart. See if it stays in front, or if LLWD bounces back, as it has been doing

  61. Regarding Fantasia — I was a Fantasia fan before I ever watched Idol. I have seen many Idol alums live, and almost all were excellent performers — but Fantasia is my #2 favorite live Idol alum performer. (Wonder who is my #1? ;) ) I just hope someday Fantasia can have a happy, uneventful life because her life has been like 10 Lifetime movies!

Nice numbers for Adam. Second Billboard Top 40 single!

But much as I love Adam, the “Single Sales” are the silliest Billboard charts. These are for CD Single sales which in the US are <<<1% of single sales — IIHY is the Australian import. So I guess people added the WWFM on to their IIHY orders at Amazon pulling it back onto the chart.

add me to the list of people worried about archies sales.

It is a much more competitive market than in 2008 — and far less friendly to “pop” music and althouth I really expected Archie to get a better reception for his lead single, the album release is 7 weeks away and that is a lot of time. I am sure that Jive has a pre-release promo plan.

  63. Not fan worried ’bout Archie’s sale, just surprised that those 2.3 mil views of SBL MV on VEVO in just 2 wks didn’t translate into sales. Got the impression here in the AI bubble esp.,that he’s very popular among idols and had large, loyal followings

I noticed that sales can drive radioplay & of course vice-versa, so I guess SBL will now be at the mercy of radioplay. The vid didn’t do much to boost initial sale. Not sure how having the MV on vH1 can drive more sale unless you’re known as a visual artist/performer or that the MV is really sick or state-of-the-art good.

I thought SBL is a catchy song, sounds effortless, & with his big AI fans, had made prediction that it’ll be a hit. Now, I’m changing my tune. The song is a hard sell and only radioplay can help, IMO. The MV didn’t do justice to the song & I’m not impressed with his live performance either (looks like it’s a hard song to sing live). Doesn’t leave good impression to first time listener if the artist appears to be struggling over a song he’s promoting.

  64. Way to go, Adam! Hope IIHY achieves the necessary success to allow us Sleepwalker for the fall :)

The first time I heard the song, I thought it was a little outdated, it don’t fit with what’s playing on the radio.

I know its hard to explain if you are not into R&B, but Fantasia is a name in that world. She’s always done well touring

I don’t think Fantasia has ever had a tour. She did open for Kanye West in 2004 but nothing since then.
