Fantasia Behind The Music Debuts on VH1

In Fantasia’s Behind the Music episode, which debuted on VH1 last night,   we learn that her childhood was horrible–bullied at school, raped at 14–and don’t get me started on her violent baby Daddy and asshat father (He basically said, on camera, that she was asking to be raped! And he sued her.)

Scenes from her Lifetime movie, based on her memoir, Life is Not a Fairytale are incorporated into the beginning scenes. I had forgotten that ‘Tasia had starred in her own bio-pic. Pretty wacky stuff

She discusses her attempted suicide, but there’s nothing new that we haven’t already heard. You can watch the entire episode after the jump.

Also, check out her performance and interview on Good Morning America, and links to her AOL Sessions and Walmart soundcheck HERE.

  1. Hearing about Fantasia’s upbringing, makes me appreciate my parents more than ever. If all of this is true, she needs some help with a lot of issues, before she totally self destruct. Fantasia needs to be thinking about what all of this drama is doing to her own child. She needs to do what her own parents seem not to do, put her child first before their own selfish needs.

  2. Yeah, that is what I was trying to say yesterday. She had a hard life growing up and her family is awful, so while I am massively disappointed in her actions lately I find it hard to jump in her ass too hard because I know she needs a lot of help. She’s very talented, I hope she gets it all together sooner rather than later.

That’s what I am trying to say, I am disappointed in her behavior, but I wish her well with this album. It’s think this will be the best one she has done so far. Fantasia has such a unique voice, but never really got the kind of material she needed to let her voice shine. Unless she cleans up the mess her personal life is, she’s never going to be truly able to enjoy the success from her music.

  4. I’m so glad Fantasia said that at the end. It annoys me when people bad mouth how she looks just cause they dislike her music or some behavior she’s done, but you know what, its what makes her Fantasia and I’m glad she’s finally embraced it.

I downloaded this album from Itunes last night and its her best one yet. I hope it sells well for her, and she gets her personal life together. She’s too talented to let some no good man get in the way of her God given talent that can provide a future for her and her daughter.

Very true. She should probably just stay single and focus on raising her daughter and her music for awhile.

  6. She sure is one drama/pity loving self entightled person. No cd for me thanks.

  7. She has so much talent, Summertime will always be one of my most favorite memories from AI, but I’ve always felt that she was going to have a hard time finding success, mainly because she doesn’t have the stable family support that someone who has been thrust into the spotlight needs.

  8. i see no coincidence between her recent drama in the media just before the release of her album. Seems all carefully orchestrated for me after an absence of 4 years. It put her back on the map but really, it’s all kind of lame.

  9. Fantasia should adopt “The Song that Never Ends” from Lambchop as her theme song. The repetitiveness in her story is mind numbing. Fantasia in a nutshell: “somebody done me wrong/Life was unfair/people were mean…and I learned from it/became a stronger person/started to believe in myself.” repeat this meme a few more times and you have her life. Clearly if she was learning from it, she wouldn’t keep making dumb mistakes.

Obviously the rape, getting hit by her boyfriend, and losing out in the daddy lottery were beyond her control. But Fantasia, meet hundreds of thousands of other women who have experienced trauma and hardship. You aren’t the only one but you certainly act like it. You have incredible talent and more opportunities than the average survivor. Stop acting like “Sister Put Upon from the Sisterhood of Perpetual Victims” and move on for real this time.

  10. I feel pity and care for the people of Louisiana who had their lives shattered by the hurricanes… i do NOT feel sorry for this hoebag .. waaaaahhhhh bring me the waaaammmbulance.

  11. Why all the negative talk about Fantasia? She probably has something medically wrong with her and that cannot be controlled on its own. I doubt she is doing this all intentionally for herself.

Being immature with a huge streak of teenage entitlement and selfishness can’t be cured with a pill.

  13. Does anyone know how old her daughter is?
Did she always have this speaking voice?

  14. Who knows what makes one person very strong and selfless in the face of adversity (have known several people like this who have stories like hers) and another person self destructive and prone to squandering away golden opportunities and genetic talents so many never get?
I would really feel more sympathetic if not for the timing of the fake (even Fantasia would know there are effective ways to commit suicide, not aspirin) suicide attempt and horrid press release pimping her album right after.
Her type of R &B music is a niche that can sell very well today and it sounds like this album deserves to sell well, so I don’t begrudge her that at all, good for her.
But the rest of it, yikes. I really hope the album success is not enabling for her behavior and will finally help her get it together for someone other than herself.

  15. The thing is, Fantasia has a choice and so far, has apparently made all of the wrong ones. Having a daughter should inspire her to start getting her shit together, not continue to make one self-destructive choice after another. Yes, she clearly needs help and lots of it. But it seems that she would rather publicly destroy herself than get real help for herself and her daughter. I don’t care how hard her life has been. LOTS of people have had shitty lives growing up. She acts as if she is the only one. It’s what she chooses to do with her life now that matters. She is choosing to remain a victim and that is something I will never have any sympathy for whatsoever.

  16. Fantasia should take a look at her friend, Jennifer Hudson, and see
how a person can, in the face of tragedy, continue to lead a positive life and be an excellent role model.

I suppose I see where you’re coming from, but I don’t think orchestrating an affair is the route to go to promote your album. I think she’s completely lost and she won’t rebound. The damage has been done. IMO, she’s had enough chances. Give someone else who wants and deserves success a break.

  18. She was amazing in “The Color Purple.” I hope her CD does well.
