Producer says new ‘Idol’ will be ‘nothing like what you’ve seen before’

“American Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe was hitting the pre-Golden Globes party circuit Thursday night. At the Bulgari fundraiser for Save the Children, he chatted with me about his return to the show, saying he “can’t wait to just get the new season out there. End all the speculation about it.”

Lythgoe said that this season of “Idol” will be “totally different.” How different does he really mean? On a scale of one to 10, this one’s an 11. “The show is nothing like what you’ve seen before, and the reason for that is the judges, ” Lythgoe said. Steven (Tyler) and Jennifer (Lopez), they know not just what makes a star, but they know what it’s like to be one, too. And their advice is really geared toward that.”

Richard Rushfield’s ‘Untold Story’ sings out about ‘Idol’

Q: What is the “untold” story of American Idol?

A: So many parts of the show seem like part of the natural order of the universe — a three-judge panel, for instance. When they created it, it was a combination of luck, some smart decisions and a lot of things that could have gone differently and produced a very different show. It’s also the story backstage, about producing something that no one expected to be a hit. The show was completely written off when it first aired in America. It was considered a Star Searchretread.
