Broadway Theaters Divided Over Dimming Lights for Joan Rivers – Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League, said that Rivers did not meet the criteria for the honor because “people need to have been very active recently in the theater, or else be synonymous with Broadway — people who made their careers here, or kept it up,” she told The New York Times on Monday. Rivers, who died Thursday from cardiac arrest, last appeared on Broadway in 1994 in Sally Marr…and her escorts, a play she wrote and starred in. She earned a Tony Award nomination for her performance. She also appeared in Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound in 1986 and in 1972’s Fun City, which she also wrote. Comparably, a recent recipient of the dimming honor was Robin Williams, who only starred in one play, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, and had a 2002 stand-up special, Robin Williams: Live on Broadway. St. Martin’s comment sparked a bit of a social media outrage among the theater community and spawned the hashtag #dim4joan, and everyone from Broadway stars to fans joined in the conversation. A number of theaters are going to go ahead and dim their lights anyway…I have a feeling the group may reverse their decision. – Read more at The Hollywood Reporter ETA: Yup. The Broadway League reversed their decision. “Joan Rivers loved Broadway and we loved her. Due to the outpouring of love and respect for Joan Rivers from our community and from her friends and fans worldwide, the marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in her memory tonight, at exactly 6:45 p.m. for one minute.”

Howard Stern convinced he was ‘wrong guy’ to give eulogy for Joan Rivers – With only a day to prepare, Stern sought out the help of fellow comedian Louis C.K. for advice on the speech, and said, “I was in touch with Louis C.K. and he’d written me and he said, ‘You know, Joan really deserves a great sendoff because of her impact.’ “He said something very profound: ‘Joan was like an aunt or a best friend who could make everything better. And even in times… after lets just say 9/11 or the country just seems to be going downhill or things just seem to be bad… she would crack a joke, and you know this is true, when she would crack a joke, you didn’t feel so alone. You felt like we were all together and you felt like oh maybe things aren’t so bad.'” Stern also admitted he shed some tears at the touching service thanks to Hugh Jackman, who honored Rivers’ memory with a rendition of Peter Allen song, Quiet Please, There’s a Lady on Stage. Stern said, “He starts singing it quietly and part of the song is clap your hands together. He made everyone get up and start clapping their hands to the song. I was so f**king moved by this guys performance. I had tears. – Read more at Philly.com
