High notes hit despite sales slump

Elliott Yamin, Elliott Yamin: Carrie Underwood and Daughtry sold more records this year, but no Idol alum released a more likable record than Yamin. His velvety rasp made magic of singles Wait For You and One Word. But Trainwreck, with it’s old-school soul groove, is the disc’s secret weapon.

Here are my top 10 music stories of 2007, in no particular order:

American Idols: Daughtry, led by American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry, had the best selling album of the year, and scored an impressive four Grammy noms, while American Idol winner Carrie Underwood’s 2006 CD debut, Some Hearts, showed no signs of slowing down in ’07, as she picked up every major music award this year and got a few more Grammy nods for her single Before He Cheats. Her second album, Carnival Ride, came out in October and she’ll tour with Keith Urban in ’08.

Ultimately, he made it to the top 5 in the contest before getting the boot May 2. Phil Stacey, a Navy man who was stationed in the region for a time, was eliminated the same night. Both singers returned to the area Sept. 18 to play Hampton Coliseum as part of the “American Idols Live!” tour.
