Idol Headlines for 09/26/09

Kris Allen’s Shocking Revelation

“Idol” host Ryan Seacrest learned something so juicy and scandalous about “American Idol” champ Kris Allen today, that he had to spread the word via Twitter. Seacrest posted, “Today Kris allen told me his wife has to drop him off and pick him up at work now because they only have one car in LA.” OK, maybe it’s not so scintillating after all, but we needed some sort of Kris Allen fix!

More Idol Headlines after the JUMP…

Gettin’ married? Meet McPhee

These days, being an “American Idol” alumn doesn’t mean squat. Your reality show ass better get on the ball as soon as Simon Cowell nails your coffin shut or you may be flipping patties at the same Burger Hut we saw in your audition footage.

If you do hit the ground running, big things can happen. Look at Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and Kellie — ugh — Pickler. They are all huge acts in their respective genres. Skipping along behind said stars, like a flower child who ate too many special brownies, is the life-loving Katharine McPhee.

A Conversation with Brooke White

Recently, I was afforded the privilege to interview an American Idol alumna-a gifted vocalist, instrumentalist and songwriter- the stunning Brooke White. Brooke White was the fifth place finalist on the seventh season of American Idol. Her new album, ‘High Hopes and Heartbreak, ‘ released by June Baby Records, has received rave reviews from music critics.

An Arizona native, White first performed in public at the age of 15, where she auditioned for her school musical, Meet Me In St. Louis, and ended up with the lead role. This marked the beginning of her path into music.

Sparks defines ‘diva’ her way

Jordin Sparks — American Idol winner, inaugural-ball entertainer, purity-ring enthusiast, plus-size teen model — is all of 19 years old.

But she is already reaching diva-level proportions.

The native of Phoenix — who performed this month in VH1’s Divas Live, sandwiched between seasoned superstars (Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston) and spunky up-and-comers (Adele and Miley Cyrus) — is riding high with an opening slot on the Britney Spears tour and a top-10 album, Battlefield.

Going Toe-to-Toe with ‘Dancing with the Stars” Michael Irvin

If it had been solely up to the judges’ scores on last Monday’s “Dancing with the Stars, ” former Dallas Cowboys’ football champ Michael Irvin and his pro partner Anna Demidova might have gone home with a lowly score of 13 points for their cha cha.

Now ET is inside Irvin and Demidova’s private rehearsal to find out how they plan to win the judges over.

The pro dancer told ET’s Kevin Frazier that she is going to make their quick step more “complicated” to please the judges.

SYTYCD: Live show adds new dimensions to reality show routines

‘So You Think You Can Dance, ‘ the television show, must be doing its job a little too well, because ‘So You Think You Can Dance, ‘ the tour, is a little disappointing.

That’s not to say the road show, which stopped at Newark’s Prudential Center Thursday night and hits Trenton’s Sovereign Bank Arena tonight, wasn’t entertaining, even spectacular at times.

The So You Think You Can Dance Tour Is Like Watching TV with 20, 000 Strangers

Last night I ventured all the way out to Newark, New Jersey to catch the live version of So You Think You Can Dance. It is simultaneously worse than you would expect and more awesome than you could hope for.

First of all, trying to take New Jersey Transit at 6pm on a Thursday night when there is also a U2 concert at the Meadowlands is like trying to drive out of New Orleans when a hurricane is coming, except instead of dealing with terrified citizens, you’re dealing with excited boozers with no musical taste.

  1. The first Realite episode is up at EW.com, with a Kris Allen interview.
There is news of two more songs that will, or might, be on the album in that interview. One is by the same guys who wrote LLWD and is apparently just as wordy.

    Slezak’s tweet with the link.

The world premiere of Ralit has arrived, starring Kris Allen, DWTS, Top Model, Idol, and Runway! ENJOY! http://bit.ly/rMtSQ

  2. LMAO about the number one headline (both for MTV posting it and MJ putting it at the top). We all need some humour around here.

And this is not to be missed:

  3. Carrie Underwood, Play On (Nov. 3) True confession: I gave Underwood’s 2007 album Carnival Ride a D grade. Two years later, I have four songs from that disc on my iPod. I will never again underestimate the Nashville nymph’s seductive powers.

I do not own any Carrie music — although I think she has build an amazing, admirable career — but I just love the phrase “Nashville nymph”. And I will never underestimate her again either.

  4. Happy anniversary to Kris and Katy! They have made it through the 1st year of marriage!!!

  6. It surprises me that Sean Daly picked Adam as his 10 intriguing album, because he never like Adam during the show. Ha.. I guess it’s right, either you like him or not people will always want to know what Adam’s up to…. what is he going to do next?.. what’s the next crazy thing he would do? … I’m really looking forward for next week… news from him and his single..

  7. I can’t get the Realite episode to work — when I click on the link, it says video not available.

But according to the peeps over at ontd_ai, Kris reveals two more songs, one written by the same people who wrote LLWD (but evidently a demo — NOT a previously recorded/released song) called “Written All Over My Face”, and an “angsty” song co-written by Kris himself, Greg Kurstin and Lindy Robbins called “Before We Come Undone” — which is evidently a song about trying to keep a relationship from falling apart.

If anyone can get the video to work or sees it posted on YouTube, please post that info here. Thanks!

Meanwhile, this morning LLWD is at #28 overall and #15 on the pop chart for ITunes…

  8. Michael Slezak revealed more Kris songs done for his album:

‘Written All Over My Face’ written by The Script
‘Before You Come Undone’ written by Lindy Robbins and Greg (?)
‘I Need To Know’ co-written by Kris Allen

  11. After the bombshell yesterday, I’d say that Ryan’s attempting to be cute and make nice after having Mr. Allen twisting in the wind.

Carrie is anything but “a nymph”. Personally, I perceive her as decidedly asexual. The phrase “Nashville nymph” does have a nice alliterative quality though.

  12. ‘Written All Over My Face’ written by The Script

I’m tellin you, when I heard all the songs from The Script album (called The Script), I told myself I can see Kris sings all their songs, because their songs/sounds really like Kris. It’s Kris. So I guess Kris’s going to London and working with their producer’s a good thing.

  13. Q3

According to the BMI website, the song is called “Before We Come Undone” (not “Before You Come Undone”)

    writers: Kris Allen
    Greg Kurstin
    Lindy Robbins

which means that Kris has written or co-written at least 2 songs for the album (the other that we know about being “I Need to Know”)

For those who don’t know who Greg Kurstin is, he is half of the indie/synthpop/alternative duo The Bird and The Bee. He is also a writer/producer who has worked with Lily Allen, the Flaming Lips and Beck (among other people). He is also a keyboardist who has appeared on songs including “Circus”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Kurstin

  14. More from the BMI website:

    “Written All Over My Face”

    writers:

    Andrew Frampton
    Steve Kipner
    Daniel O’Donoghue
    Mark Sheehan

Do we know when Kris is heading to London?

  15. Country songwriter Aimee Mayo who wrote a song (with Ryan Tedder) that Adam recorded while in Denver Colorado the past week seems to be VERY excited about SOMETHING!!

LLWD popped up to #25 for a bit about 30 minutes ago, and then went back down — now at #27 Top Songs and #15 Pop songs.

  17. I agree with Kirsten. I lol’ed at the first headline this morning – and said a silent prayer that it had nothing to do with LLWD!

  18. Ok, this link works for the Realite episode — funny shoutout to Anoop in the opening subtitles — and Kristen and Slezak are funny/snarky as always. And Kris seems happy to talk a little about the songs Slezak has heard.

    Muse

    Album: The Resistance
    (Warner Bros.)

    In stores: Now

Love live Queen: The British eggheads in Muse must sound mind-expanding to a 13-year-old kid munching Fritos in front of MTV. All that operatic grandiosity, all those guitar theatrics, sci-fi synths and trippy lyricism. But after listening to the trio’s new album, The Resistance, which has all the subtlety of a Freddie Mercury wardrobe change, any veteran music fan would chuckle at the heavy-lifting from Queen, Radiohead, Chopin and more. That doesn’t mean it’s bad ‘” in fact, it’s often rousing, if a bit silly. Songs are titled Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1 (Overture), but they sure are pretty. Matthew Bellamy shreds like Brian May and howls like Thom Yorke. He bites hard from his heroes, but he’s earnest in his homage.

Reminds us of: Muse opens for U2 on Oct. 9 at Raymond James Stadium. I’ll see you there.

    Download this: Uprising

    Grade: C+

I’m not understanding why the Tampa Bay article gave a C+ to Muse’s album. What’s wrong with American critics (see Rolling Stone review)? And can’t they stop the Radiohead (Thom Yorke) comparisons with Muse (Matt Bellamy)? *Annoyed*

The Script didn’t write “Written All Over My Face” OR “Live Like We’re Dying”. They were written by Andrew Frampton, Steven Kipner and two other people.

I guess Aimee’s song made the record! It will be so funny if Adam’s first single turns out to be written by a country songwriter. Just picturing Randy Travers face when Adam sings it at the CMA’s — LOL, just kidding.

And I guess by the “moonwlk” reference it is a dance track?

  26. Kellie-ugh-Pickler

My husband and I love, love, love Pickler. Katherine McPhee is beautiful but her personality doesn’t reach out and grab me. Maybe her “wedding song” will, but I kind of doubt it.

  28. girlygirl, Slezak posted another link for people having a ‘video unavailable’ problem with Realite. Here it is:

Thanks Sunn, the Kris bits were cool. Funny when referring to the alarm that set off during last Jim interview for LLWD, he said ‘it should have been smoking hot’

  29. Oh and Kris’ reaction to Slezak thinking the song title was “Before We Come”! I spit my drink out all over my keyboard when I saw that! I hope Kris never learns how to have a poker face — his expressions are too funny

  30. About Slezak’s ‘Realite’, i don’t know if they are going to stick with French this year (like they did with Japanese last year), but that was funny. I’m French so it was kind of distracting to hear what was said and read the sub-titles at the same time.. lol

  31. sunkissedtrampoline: The Script didn’t write ‘Written All Over My Face’ OR ‘Live Like We’re Dying’ . They were written by Andrew Frampton, Steven Kipner and two other people.

    Snuffles

It turns out Rickey was lying ‘” he hasn’t heard any of Kris’ songs

I dunno. Obviously three songs got leaked to Slezak (on top of LLWD) and Rickey seemed to be aware that those songs were out there. He either heard the songs or heard the scuttlebutt about them.

Rickey may be back tracking but it’s too much of a coincidence to me.

  33. I don’t understand Scott snorkeling. The idea behind that is seeing beautiful fish under the water. How can he chase a fish?

  34. And I guess by the ‘moonwlk’ reference it is a dance track?

I’m guessing it’s a dance track that either samples Billie Jean, or has a similar beat to it. I’m probably wrong though LOL

  35. snuffles: I dunno. Obviously three songs got leaked to Slezak (on top of LLWD) and Rickey seemed to be aware that those songs were out there. He either heard the songs or heard the scuttlebutt about it.

Rickey may be back tracking but it’s too much of a coincidence to me.

ITA it’s too much of a coincidence for me, too. Rickey said he heard 3 of Kris’ songs and now Slezak confirms that he has heard 3 songs. So I really believe that Rickey at least heard about the songs.

But Rickey was an ass about the whole thing and I have never found his opinion or info to be worth much. JMHO.

  36. Wonder why they revealed info about that other song with the Script connection. They seem to really be tying him into working with them and their producers. I want to hear about the Joe King (the fray) and Mat Kearney collaborations, was really excited about those connections! Really like the Switchfoot connection yesterday too.

When is Kris supposed to leave for London to work with the Script producers? Wonder if Katy will get to tag along, would be a nice anniversary trip! Congrats to them today!

  37. I guess Aimee’s song made the record! It will be so funny if Adam’s first single turns out to be written by a country songwriter. Just picturing Randy Travers face when Adam sings it at the CMA’s ‘” LOL, just kidding.

Do you think he sang it with a twang?

  38. I just watched Realite and it was awesome. I am glad that we don’t have to wait until the next AI season to see Kristen and Michael together. I also love the fact that Kris was shown throughout the episode. I can’t wait for his album to come out in November!

  39. It turns out Rickey was lying ‘” he hasn’t heard any of Kris’ songs

Nah, I’m guessing it was a backtrack to CYA declaration.

  40. I have a serious “educate me” question. On the thread last night, several people said Kris is not doing well with the song and compared it to Archies hitting #1 by 6:00 and Cook’s hitting #3 by the following day (without any radio play, etc) . In making those comparisons, they said Kris is not doing well for a winner, blah, blah. But, then I come on here today and #25 is considered to be great for Kris. Leave all the names I mentioned out of it for sake of stopping wars…..but, what is good, what is great? I guess it matters if the info is coming from fans or nonfans or whatever. i just want to know from past experiences, what is (non fangirly) good or great-what are reasonable expectations, etc.

  41. BestAI: So, are people going to post here for any Adam news, or his three-day old thread?

    Is there news?

I hope the only news is that Adam is taking the weekend off in New Orleans. The only thing that I have seen is that he was spotted in the French Quarter walking down the street and also was at NO largest/best gay club last night. Which sounds like he is taking a break to me.

  42. I dunno. Obviously three songs got leaked to Slezak (on top of LLWD) and Rickey seemed to be aware that those songs were out there. He either heard the songs or heard the scuttlebutt about it.

Argh!!!! What makes people think that Slezak is the only person to hear those songs?

I’d bet my calculator that Slezak isn’t Rickey’s source. Slezak doesn’t give Rickey the time of day. He’s not going to leak things to him.

We know Rickey has leaked things about “Strut” . There are other sources out there.

awwww… thanks so much Sunn for posting this. She’s an amazing artist!!

  44. But, then I come on here today and #25 is considered to be great for Kris.

It’s good for a song with as much airplay as it’s had. It’s not great for somebody coming off of Idol. All of this is in my opinion.

It could be because it’s a half-assed release and people may not be aware that it’s really out there. Or it could be that Kris doesn’t have enough rabid fans. Has anybody been gifted 8 copies yet? If not, probably low on the rabid scale.

Doesn’t mean he’s doomed. Jordin had similar results off of Idol (and as far as I know, nobody accused Arkansas of orchestrating her win).

Fair enough. But you’re just backing up my main point. There WERE 3 Kris songs going around. So MAYBE Rickey somehow heard them or at least heard the gossip about them. So he wasn’t straight up lying. Possibly exaggerating and having an unnecessary meltdown (as he is want to do) but NOT LYING.

terraj- rock snobs and critics that take themselves too seriously and Radiohead fans have a big beef with Muse. They feel they rip off Queen and Radiohead. I am not a Radiohead fan except for the song Creep, so I don’t really know where that comes from.

You know what the irony is? Rolling Stone magazine hated Led Zeppelin so much in the 70s. Almost all (if not all) LZ albums were critically slammed by the magazine (I think only Cameron Crowe loved the band but he wasn’t a music reviewer), so much so that in either the late 1990s or else early 2000s (can’t remember) the magazine re-reviewed Led Zep’s catalogue with glowing reviews to rewrite their own history, so as to not go down in posterity as the music magazine that failed to recognise an iconic band when they had the chance to. LOL. Looks like some things never change…

  49. Kirsten: Argh!!!! What makes people think that Slezak is the only person to hear those songs?

I don’t think that Slezak leaked anything to Rickey. I just think that Rickey must have heard something — either the opinion of someone who heard all 4 songs OR actually heard the songs himself. I think that he heard someone else’s opinion in confidence, breached that confidence, then tried to clean it up by saying he had heard the songs himself. And I also think he overreacted. But that is just my opinion and a total guess. But he had the exact right song count.

  50. Can someone help me out? I am on vacation and can only check for news for about 5 mins a day which has set me reaaally far behind.

    a) I still can’t buy Kris’ single on itunes in Canada. Was able to buy everything else to this point. Is that not really odd? Why would they do that?

    b) What news about Adam is supposed to hit this week?

  51. I know ontd_ai has a post about gifting LLWD to people who don’t have ITunes or live in other countries. And radio stations aren’t really played it a lot yet. It may be one of those songs that moves up the charts slowly as it gets more exposure. It is at least moving upward on the Itunes charts rather than down, so that’s good.

  52. spring2009

    b) What news about Adam is supposed to hit this week?

Well there will definitely be a press release about the success of Adam’s Donors Choose charity drive. Also, a previously reliable source (elephant1212) said that Adam’s record label was deciding this week-end between 3 songs (all upbeat, catchy pop-rock) to make his first single.

She said that the song chosen MAY premiere next week. Also, starting October 1st, the worldwide mega promotional blitz for 2012 will begin. On just about every TV station in the USA (and the world) will be showing a 2 minute clip.

  53. Rickey was lying ‘” he hasn’t heard any of Kris’ songs

Correct. Rickey has NOT heard any of Kris’s songs.

Obviously three songs got leaked to Slezak

And other people as well–not just Slezak

  54. has this been posted yet ? In regard to Adam’s Album
“picking between 3 songs today and tomorrow, single could be released next week at the earliest” posted by elephant1212@IDF

  55. LOL. Looks like some things never change’ ¦

RS hated Queen back in the early days as well. And now they hate anyone inspired by them, especially if they’re Brits. I wonder how they feel about Mika? I should go check their review if it’s up.

    You’re welcome steve.

  56. I think Rickey got third hand info from someone who heard the songs and didn’t like them. Since we don’t know who that source is, we have no clue on how closely connected to the label or 19 s/he is. And one person’s opinion about songs that may not have even been finished at the time s/he heard them, means basically nothing.

Kris said on Realite that they are going to tweak “Before We Come Undone” a little to try and make it better — so that song isn’t even finished, necessarily. Which makes me think that Rickey’s “source” didn’t even hear finished versions of the songs.

And Rickey is still an ass. He violated his “source”‘s confidence and he ticked off Kris and Kris’ fans, along with a bunch of other people – and for what?

  57. So what is good and what is bad on the itunes chart? Obviously, #1 is good-I’m not that dumb. I am not looking for reasons why it is at #26-I just want to know what is reasonably considered good. Obviously, #1000 is bad-I’m not that dumb either. I guess I am trying to say….from a person with some NON biased knowledge, Is the song doing good from past comparisons? Would #26 be considered a hit while #43 is not… even though they both chart up and down….does that make sense?

  58. Tweets about Adam in New Orleans; from @Gr8spiritwolf — who was texting her bother who worked there:

@LoveDaBoys bro said was mobbed as soon as he came in. Ppl yelling “There’s Adam Lambert” . They escorted him upstairs and out.
about 9 hours ago from web in reply to LoveDaBoys

LATEST ADAM LAMBERT…he was with a few guys and about 4 girls. =)
about 9 hours ago from web

Hey @AdamLambert Please go back to the Bourbon Pub and ask for Officer Clouse. He wants to make little sis’s dreams come true w/ autograph.

My brother is a cop there (He is Gay) and he said every1 went NUTS when he came in. Probably why he left…

Can someone help me out? I am on vacation and can only check for news for about 5 mins a day which has set me reaaally far behind.

Can’t help with the Itunes question I’m afraid. The song isn’t available in the UK either.

No significant Adam news is expected, at the moment it’s all just rumors and speculation. There’s a huge media event for 2012 taking place nest week, on Thursday I think.

  61. But, then I come on here today and #25 is considered to be great for Kris.

We don’t know and really can not predict how well this song will do in the coming months. We just have to wait and see. Hopefully the song will settle into a steady selling pattern when radio play picks up. I agree it is not great for someone coming off of Idol but as I learned from last year predicting doom and gloom at this early stage in a song would be imprudent.

  62. I’ve just posted this in yesterday’s headlines thread, but I thought I’d bring it over to today’s one:

10 intriguing albums being released, including Weezer, Adam Lambert and Wolfmother
By Sean Daly, Times Pop Music Critic
In Print: Sunday, September 27, 2009

Thanks for linking the list VAlilac. Wasn’t Sean Daly less than complimentary about the Idol tour, or am I confusing him with another music journo? His name seems familiar, I’m sure he saw the show.

  63. I also have an itunes question.. Does anyone know if Kris will be featured in the Tuesday new release e-mail that they send out each week? I am hoping that the news letter captures all new releases since the last one.

  64. So what is good and what is bad on the itunes chart?

It varies depending on the artist. We don’t have enough history to say definitively. The David’s did well last year, but Jordin and Blake did not the year before (and Taylor’s single went nowhere. I can’t remember about Kat’s first week, but I don’t think it set any barns on fire).

First week numbers are a demonstration of the rabid fans. Songs still have to have legs (ie earn new listeners) to do well overall.

It’s too soon to hit the panic button, but it’s also too early to book a hall to celebrate the song going platinum.

  65. No significant Adam news is expected at the moment, it’s all just rumors and speculation. There’s a huge media even for 2012 taking place nest week, on Thursday I think.

We don’t even know if TFM will be part of that.

If they are in the process of choosing between 2-3 songs, that must mean they are completed (those songs), or close to completion. I don’t understand why they can’t give us some dates. Don’t they have to premier the single somewhere? How about when and where? That way we don’t have to check every hour to see if there is any news. We are still at NOTHING.

  66. Oh god, how am I going to buy Adam’s single on iTunes if it’s not available in Singapore? Looks like might have to beg my friends with iTunes gift credits to help. Hopefully RCA is indeed going ahead with the international release thing and I’d be able to buy it from the local iTunes store the moment it’s released.

ETA: Here’s what Sean Daly had to say about Adam just before the finale: link. Not a very objective reviewer considering that he just wanted the underdog to win.

  67. Thanks Sunn. I wonder when/where the premiere of the movie will take place. I was outside of a premiere the other day. I wonder if Adam will attend the one for 2012. Was really able to get up close.

  68. alaadam, Itunes postions are just that, Itunes positions. Next week there will be real numbers and we will see how much it sold.
A #29 peak (especially if it has peaked after a day) is not good for the first single from an idol winner, if you compare to past winners (In the itunes era both Jordin and Cook were doing better). Idol winners are different from your general new artist, because they’re already known. That will reflect in the song’s position on HOT100 (if the song makes that chart). I think every first single has made the HOT100 but Taylor Hicks’.

But in the end, this is just the first week. If the song picks airplay all this won’t matter. The only thing is tells you now is that Kris may not have many devoted fans at the moment.
A good HOT100 debut could create buzz for it though.

  69. Here were the first week numbers for Tattoo (which I believe was sent to iTunes on a Tuesday. Certianly, it was #62 by Wednesday morning):

22 Jordin Sparks ‘Tattoo’ 33,764 (NEW) Total: 33,780 (NEW)

Here was it’s radio airplay rank at that point:

    Jordin Sparks:
    ‘Tattoo’ : 61 Pop (112), 113 HAC (245), 122 AC (-), 181 Rhy (-)

  70. Poor Adam! He can’t go anywhere without getting mobbed. Well, maybe for now he should consider going to one of tropical islands for some down time where he is not recognized. On the other hand, glad to see lots of people recognize him and want his autograph and pic.

  71. Thanks Sunn. I wonder when/where the premiere of the movie will take place. I was outside of a premiere the other day. I wonder if Adam will attend the one for 2012. Was really able to get up close.

I’m almost positive Adam will be there. He has a significant song in the movie.

  72. snuffles: I don’t see Demond Child’s name listed on that site. Where are you getting that?

There are a couple of people on IDF who are tracking the album very closely and they believe this is the Carlsson-Desmond song. But you’re right, it might be a different Andreas Carlsson song. But, Andreas hasn’t written songs solo, and they didn’t go into a Max Martin recording session without a song. Adam tweet that they were recording with Max Martin, not co-writing:

AdamLambert: ‘In NYC to record song with MAX MARTIN!!! Soo excited. This album is getting so great!!’

There were previous reports that Andreas Carlsson and Desmond Child wrote a song together for Adam. They co-wrote “Waking Up in Vegas” for Katy Perry and work together a lot. Andreas wrote on his blog that he and Desmond working on songs for Adam Lambert and that “he (Adam) is talk of the town” right know and that every “hit producer want to work with this guy.”

  73. Poor Adam! He can’t go anywhere without getting mobbed. Well, maybe for now he should consider going to one of tropical islands for some down time where he is not recognized. On the other hand, glad to see lots of people recognize him and want his autograph and pic.

At least we know he has name/face recognition outside the Idol bubble.

  74. Sunn, thanks for that Ukraine’s Got Talent link. That was stunning. Truly one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen.

@spring2009, I wonder if they are going to have a few of them ‘“ L.A., N.Y., London, perhaps?

  75. At least we know he has name/face recognition outside the Idol bubble.

  77. Thanks Leome! That helps answer my questions.

Kirsten-what do all those numbers mean (33,764)-is that how many was sold the first week? And the numbers in parenthesis after Pop, HAC, etc-what are those? And why does it have 113 HAC and 122 AC and 181 RHY-decode please.

Wow, and ENTIRE New Orleans bar of gay Idol fans all congregated in one place? I didn’t know that Idol fans rolled in packs like that.

  79. There were previous reports that Andreas Carlsson and Desmond Child wrote a song together for Adam. They co-wrote ‘Waking Up in Vegas’ for Katy Perry and work together a lot. Andreas wrote on his blog that he and Desmond working on songs for Adam Lambert and that ‘he (Adam) is talk of the town’ right know and that every ‘hit producer want to work with this guy.’

Do you have a link to that? Because the only Desmond Child info I got was from a Ferras tweet saying that he was working with him and Lauren Christy.

  80. Wow, and ENTIRE New Orleans bar of gay Idol fans all congregated in one place? I didn’t know that Idol fans rolled in packs like that.

LMAO! 30 million idol fans seems like a lot. I’ll take it. How many votes did Obama get in the election-wasn’t it like 42 million. Wonder if these are the same folks!

  81. Susan M.

@spring2009, I wonder if they are going to have a few of them ‘“ L.A., N.Y., London, perhaps?

Do they do that for big budget movies? You know how actors go on every show to promote their movies. I wonder if they will send Adam to sing TFM.

  82. Kirsten-what do all those numbers mean (33,764)-is that how many was sold the first week?

    Yes:

And the numbers in parenthesis after Pop, HAC, etc-what are those?

The number before the format is the ranking on the chart (we used to get the full Mediabase charts, that’s why we used to be able to report outside of the top 50). The number after the format in brackets is the chart position the week before.

And why does it have 113 HAC and 122 AC and 181 RHY-decode please.

HAC = Hot Adult Contemporary (between Pop and soft rock)
AC = Adult Contemporary (soft rock)
RHY = Rhythmic (dance music – it’s a pretty big format. The top song this week has 38.3 million listeners. The top pop song has 65 million listeners and the top HAC has 19 million listeners. AC tops out at 16 million )

You don’t think being a open gay on AI (#1 show on TV) would not give you lots of talk in gay clubs or bars when the show was on?

Interesting point. I also have to wonder how the NoBo debacle might affect Kris’ debut. All the other Idols had an entre into the general population market with their coronation singles and had already reached non-Idol fans at that point.

I hope it’s no big deal, but seems to put heavier pressure on LLWD.

  85. Wow, and ENTIRE New Orleans bar of gay Idol fans all congregated in one place? I didn’t know that Idol fans rolled in packs like that.

Trust me. They can. Just ask Cookie (he had to escape from the bar and hide in a van). Or Taylor (who got so mobbed once he tried escaping into a bathroom only to have some women follow him in). Even Archie caused such a mob in an airport, airport security had to shunt him out a back entrance. And you don’t need an entire bar to swarm to create a mobbing scene.

Look, I don’t know who mobbed him, but Idol fans have been known to haunt bars they think the Idols might go to when they hear they are in town.

  86. Michael sarver’s tweet

So like I have lost 28 followers in two days. Hmmmm! Where is everyone going?

why are people unfollowing him?. poor guy is trying to reach 20k. guess cos he’s not handing out backstages anymore huh?

  87. Doesn’t mean he’s doomed. Jordin had similar results off of Idol (and as far as I know, nobody accused Arkansas of orchestrating her win)

I agree with you Kirsten. I see Kris very much like Jordin where I think even though he’s a winner, he doesn’t have the buzz or rabid/large fanbase to get him off the ground moving with big sales. IF Jive does right by him and he ends up with some radio hits I think he can end up doing well sales wise even if it takes him longer. Marketing him shouldn’t be a problem.

His current iTunes position IMO is not great but I also think the lack of iTunes banner is hurting him. I dread seeing the sales numbers Wednesday morning.

Weee DC at the Borgata tonight!! I’m a wee bit excited :)

  94. Thanks for that link terraj. Harsh comments, particularly for ACIGC, which was outstanding IMO.

I’m sure that Sean Daly was mentioned either on mj’s or maybe another blogsite, and that his comments weren’t favourable about the Florida show, as he didn’t seem to be an Idol fan particularly. So, it seemed odd for him to actually say something fairly decent and include Adam’s debut abum in his top 10 listings.

  95. Maybe this has been asked and answered but … we now know that Slezak and Jim both heard 3, maybe 4, songs of Kris’s that are potential album material (one for sure – llwd). Rickey (I know, I know – can’t believe everything he says) blogged that folks at RS, EW and USA Today (iirc) heard Strut and thought it was amazing. Does this mean it’s likely they heard other songs as well … 3 or 4 total representing a sampling of songs? Is this standard operating procedure? i.e. the selective release of songs that aren’t necessarily finished (Kris said they had tweaking to do on one of the songs) or actually 100% abolutely chosen for the album (I think Kris said one would probably make the album).

Is this the record company’s version of focus groups and who gets sent these songs?

  96. Of course! But Kristen seems to be implying that everyone in that New Orleans gay bar are only fans INSIDE OF THE IDOL BUBBLE like us. That it’s improbable that people who were NOT totally into AI could recognize Adam.

I didn’t say that. I merely said that we cannot rule out the possibility that some of them are within the bubble. And I seriously doubt that every single solitary person in the bar mobbed him. Surely, somebody in the bar had some dignity and respects boundaries.

A mob can be created with 10 or 20 people.

It is entirely possible that he’s bigger than Jesus, Bono and the cast of Friends. I’m just questioning the proof in this case.

  97. Has anybody been gifted copies yet? If not, probably low on the rabid scale.

LMAO- Here’s hoping Kris AND Adam fans don’t do this bullshit. Who is it really helping in the long run?

  98. Do they do that for big budget movies? You know how actors go on every show to promote their movies. I wonder if they will send Adam to sing TFM.

I think it’s becoming more common, particularly for worldwide releases. IIRC, the last couple of “Harry Potters” had multiple premieres and so have other “blockbuster”-type movies.

  100. I think every first single has made the HOT100 but Taylor Hicks’.

Taylor didn’t have a lead single from his first album. His first single was “Do I Make You Proud” and it was #1 US/Canada but released June 13, 2006. His next single wasn’t released until February 5, 2007 — almost 2 months after the album released December 12, 2006.

Kirsten: Here were the first week numbers for Tattoo (which I believe was sent to iTunes on a Tuesday. Certianly, it was #62 by Wednesday morning):

22 Jordin Sparks ‘Tattoo’ 33,764 (NEW) Total: 33,780 (NEW)

Tattoo was released on Tuesday 9/25/07 . It was up to #19 on iTunes at the end of the day on Saturday 9/29/07. I don’t know where it peaked on iTunes but Jordin’s Tattoo was a hit — over 1.9 million units sold in the US, peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

  101. Blondie, this was Sean Daly from tampabay.com this summer
    http://blogs.tampabay.com/popmusic/2009/07/american-idol-secrets-revealed-why-kris-allen-really-wants-to-be-billy-dee-williams.html

Kris Allen = Billy Dee Williams

Don’t be fooled by the Idol champ’s quasi-virginal routine. Allen won because he’s smoove with the ladies, just like our ladies-man hero Billy Dee Williams, beer pitchman/Lando Calrissian (although I’m willing to bet Kris can’t guzzle Colt .45 or pilot the Millennium Falcon).

Adam Lambert = Siegfried & Roy
Hold on, Glambert fans. This is a compliment! Lambert is a loud, sparkly, cheesetastic showman, right? But although he has a great voice, his true talent is in razzle-dazzle. If Idol had better insurance, you would have seen him in diamond-studded jackets wrangling a jungle cat. Trust me.

  102. But Kristen seems to be implying that everyone in that New Orleans gay bar are only fans INSIDE OF THE IDOL BUBBLE like us.

I didn’t read it like that. What I understood (and I agree) is that maybe there were idol watchers in that bar, which is natural. Idol watchers have a life too. And they like to go to gay bars too. And idol fans also like to stalk their idols.
It’s not like everyone in the bar mobbed him.
Saying that because there were people there who recognize him means he is known outside the idol bubble is a big conclusion.
I suppose we’re really bored to be discussing this…

  103. And just about every one of those examples that fans knew when and where their Idol was going to be. Adam made a random unannounced stop at a bar while hanging out with his friends on a Friday night.

Perhaps I think this because I live in ground-zero for Twilight-psycho fans and I know that people actually fly here and troll the bars/restaurants hoping to mob Robert Pattison (they brag about it in the newspaper). It’s pissing EVERYBODY off.

Poor dude can’t go anywhere, announced or unannounced without creating a scene. And I don’t think it’s non-Twilight fans doing it because he’s not that well known outside of that bubble (he looks quite different from his HP days).

  104. And other people as well’“not just Slezak

So MJ were you one of those people

Have to say – the way that was worded, I was wondering the same thing ;)

  105. I’m bringing this over from yesterdays headline thread in case people didn’t see it.

Aimee Mayo is also tweeting again regarding her song that might make the cut for Adams album, or even be released as the first single. Apparently she heard him sing it for the first time yday and she was thrilled. She is saying the song is worthy of a new moonwalk ‘ ¦ don’t really know what she means by that. I am hoping there is some heavy base on the track (a la billie jean)’ ¦

    http://twitter.com/aimeemayo

I really hope her song makes his album, I fear she’ll have a serious meltdown if it doesn’t.

I’m sitting on the edge of my seat here…..waiting, waiting…..

  106. Is this the record company’s version of focus groups and who gets sent these songs?

It is not uncommon for record companies to pass around songs from an upcoming album to trusted media outlets and radio djs, to 1. create buzz and 2. get feedback. In a case like Adam’s, where a first single has to be chosen without time to properly market test the choices, it may help to get feedback from as many experienced ears as possible.

  107. snuffles

People knew Adam was in New Orleans, because that had already been on twitter. And if the Bourbon Pub is the biggest gay club/bar in the city, it makes sense that anyone who wanted to go looking for Adam would head for this club as a possible destination if Adam and his friends decided to go out anywhere.

  108. A snippet of news about Adam’s upcoming release! Nothing solid, of course, no dates, yet, darn it. But a snippet, yes, enough to keep us coming back for more.

And Adam recognition at a NO gay bar? Cool. Pretty sure that was not just Idol fans. Adam being gay and alternative did create a bit of buzz in the gay world. Plus, he was picked up and given cover stories in EW and RS before his own stuff ever hit the airwaves. He’s recognizable beyond the Idol bubble. My belief, Adam’s out there, he’s everywhere.

I think gay guys have much more on their minds and interests than a gay guy on AI.

Well if you say so ok.That had nothing to do with what i said.what would the outcome be if you asked 10 peeps in a gay club if they know adam or 10 in a straight club if they know adam? That was my point that adam is known better right now in the gay community because of being on AI.

  110. Except Kris is known to have a huge, huge fanbase.

    Are you being ironic?
During the season and post-show, Adam always had and has now the biggest fanbase at least in the internet.
That’s a reason why a lot of people considered Kris victory a shock.

What makes me nervous about Kris numbers is that it goes in the direction that season 8 as a whole may not be that popular as the ratings were down throughout the year.

I think this first day numbers are only indicative of the depth of his more obsessive fanbase, those who follow him on twitter and go to the idol websites and forums.
So if all that just amounts to a #25 peak on the itunes top songs then I am getting worried about Allison who will need to get some serious airplay before her single takes off and even a little bit about Adam even if I presume RCA is going to create a big event around his single.

  111. …he looks quite different from his HP days.

To me, he’s still oddly unattractive. Bug eyes and all.

It is entirely possible that he’s bigger than Jesus, Bono and the cast of Friends. I’m just questioning the proof in this case.

pffffft Jesus maybe but the cast of friends, come on ;-)

  112. VAlilac, oh yeah, that article. Wasn’t a big deal that he slammed Adam and acted like he didn’t, but the whole piece was so not funny. He needs to stick to music reviewing and step away from the humor.

Still interesting how of all the releases happening this fall (including the 10 he mentioned) Adam’s name is one of three in the headline and his is the photo used. People out of the Idol bubble know who he is. And suddenly it’s “our lamby.” Whatevs, Daly, I’ll take it.

  113. Valentin432

No one said Kris had a bigger fanbase than Adam. Obviously, Adam has the bigger fanbase. All they said was that Kris had a huge fanbase – which he DOES.

  114. If i was a hardcore kris fan that is what would piss me off about LLYD if they knew early on why not just release it back in late june or early july?

They want LLYD to be released closer to when the album drops. Carrie’s single was released as well this week and her album is dropping in November. If they released LLYD in July radio play and sales would in all probability be pretty low by November 17. So they are trying to release the single so that it can boost album sales in November. Folks like the song they hear on radio and buy the album.

Still it’s JUST as much of a huge leap to assume that the bar was filled with Idol/Adam-tards as some of you seem to think that people outside of the Idol bubble could recognize Adam.

Bottom line – none of us really know – do we?

  116. I think this first day numbers are only indicative of the depth of his more obsessive fanbase, those who follow him on twitter and go to the idol websites and forums.

Yes. Because they are the only ones who know its out.

So if all that just amounts to a #25 peak on the itunes top songs then I am getting seriously worried about Allison who will need to get some serious airplay before her single takes off and even a little bit about

That was the case for Allison regardless.

No Idol has been released quite this way before, so it is hard to compare Kris to anyone else right now. That said, he has never has a large hardcore internet fanbase so that part is not surprising. What we have to see over the next week or so is if Kris has a significant number of casual fans who will pick up his record when they finally hear that it is out. If he can hang on until Monday and gets a banner on Tuesday, we will see what happens.

  117. Still interesting how of all the releases happening this fall (including the 10 he mentioned) Adam’s name is one of three in the headline and his is the photo used. People out of the Idol bubble know who he is. ”

I love how much excitement his upcoming release is generating! The music industry can’t seem to stop publishing random bits of anticipatory glee when discussing it or placing it close to the top of their little fall album buzz charts. And his photo with it? Double bonus.

So if all that just amounts to a #25 peak on the itunes top songs then I am getting seriously worried about Allison who will need to get some serious airplay before her single takes off and even a little bit about Adam even if I presume RCA is going to create a big event around his single.

THIS. Day 1 of sales most likely represents the hard core Kris fans buying. And if that’s the case, the hard cores could only get him to #28 on iTunes.

Any sales beyond that will have to be from radio play, promotion and Kris winning new people over. Jordin’s “Tattoo” was a slow grower and I think that is Kris’s best hope right now.

True. Bourbon Pub may be the biggest, but it sure as heck ain’t the only gay club/bar in the city ‘“ that was certainly my N.O. experience. It was very funny walking down Bourbon Street for the first time the Saturday before Mardi Gras and we crossed the street and suddenly the block was full of gorgeous men. I said to my friend, “What the hell happened, the hotness of the men just went up like 1000 percent?”

Then I saw a few couples making out and thought, “Oh, well there you go …”

  120. snuffles, I love your list. Thanks for keeping track of it all.

Digging a bit deeper, I think there may be two Andreas Carlsson songs written for Adam. In any case, I will post the Andreas Carlsson-Desmond Childs info on this thread later today — because they both made comments about working together on a song for Adam. And it makes sense because they have worked with Katy Perry and with past Idol Alum (Ace Young, for example).

Personally, I would be very happy is Desmond didn’t have anything to do with Adam’s album — Max Martin seems like a better, more current sound and more suitable for Adam.

  121. Any sales beyond that will have to be from radio play, promotion and Kris winning new people over. Jordin’s ‘Tattoo’ was a slow grower and I think that is Kris’s best hope right now.

Geez, you make it sound like we should schedule the funeral. You’ll have to wait, I’m too fat to fit into my black dress.

  122. Except Kris is known to have a huge, huge fanbase.

    Are you being ironic?

No I’m not. Many people are convinced that Kris won by a landslide, and I’m to believe there was no voter fraud. Granted, Adam has more internet fans than practically all the idols put together, but if you are a fan of someone, you will know when someone’s album comes out, whether you frequent the internet or not.

  123. I don’t know where it peaked on iTunes but Jordin’s Tattoo was a hit ‘” over 1.9 million units sold in the US, peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

And it was a slow climb to the top, from what I recall. Jive hung in there though, as they are wont to do.

  124. Just looked at my iTunes store and LLWD is $15 on the Pop Chart and #30 on the overall chart.

ETA: I mean #15, not 15 dollars. Ugh.

  125. Perhaps I think this because I live in ground-zero for Twilight-psycho fans and I know that people actually fly here and troll the bars/restaurants hoping to mob Robert Pattison (they brag about it in the newspaper). It’s pissing EVERYBODY off.

LOL Robert Pattinson filmed scenes for an upcoming movie across the street from my office a couple of months and I whenever I looked out my window and you would have thought the president was there. Calling it a mob would be putting it mildly. I have no idea if a bunch of crazed Twlight fans knew he would be there but it was nuts and scary.

  126. Tinawina

Kris actually has a large hardcore internet fanbase. Go on ontd_ai or IDF or any of Kris’ unofficial sites and you’d realize that. Kris fans don’t post on this board much, but they are out there. Kris has 105,000+ followers on twitter — that is more than any other AI8 Idol except for Adam — it is more than twice as many as Allison has, for example.

I think you are basing your assumptions on this board. Kris fans don’t post much on this board — maybe because every discussion on here eventually seems to turn into something about Adam, which can get quite frustrating at times, since not everything is, or should be, about Adam.

    Snuffles

I agree with you that we don’t know whether the people “mobbing” Adam last night were Idol fans or not. In fact, we don’t even know what he being “mobbed” means — it could have been a handful of people coming up to him, which I don’t know if that’s “mobbing” so much as “annoying”.

And, yes, he does have some recognition outside the AI bubble — certainly much more than any of the other AI8 Idols — although I doubt that recognition is as widespread as his more hardcore fans might want to believe. Someone on this thread posted about Robert Pattinson — who do you think is more famous — Adam or Robert Pattinson? I doubt it’s Adam…not yet, anyway…

  127. “All they said was that Kris had a huge fanbase ‘“ which he DOES.”

Says who. The huge fanbases usually can get the guy up to top 10 in iTunes pretty quick. Archie (who did/does have a big tween fanbase) hit #1 in 12 hours. Nobody know how big any of their fanbases are. Seasons over and so’s the tour. Memories are short in Idolland.

Adam created a mob scene. Gee you’d think the whole frigiin club would have tweeted it. Where were the riot police?.I mean imagine the scene if Madonna or Britney walked in.No pics or articles in the NO papers? Or maybe the story is exaggerated b.s. I’m sure he caused a stir but so what.

Z100 interviewed some young pop singer yesterday whose album comes out the same day as Kris. The whole crew laughed when he had no idea who Kris was. Then they asked if he knew Adam Lambert. Faint sign of recognition.

Unbelievably there’s a huge group on the planet who are completely unaware of either of these guys.

  128. tinawina: No Idol has been released quite this way before, so it is hard to compare Kris to anyone else right now.

I agree that there is no comparable Idol release to Kris’. That said, there is no evidence that Kris has a large, hardcore fanbase on the Internet or outside of the Internet. And core fans can only get you so far — just look at Taylor Hicks.

Kris is going to have to get new fans to buy his music — just like Jordin, Cook, Carrie, Kelly and the rest of the successful Idol alum have done. Adam will need to do the same thing. So the big test will be when this song really hits radio.

  129. Valentin, I never thought about what is going to happen to Allison. She gets no buzz at all. I wonder what they are going to do with her. I think what she has going for her, however, is her voice. Conan was blown away when she was on his show. When she starts promoting her single and singing live, people will take notice, especially since she is so young.

  130. I’ve been to New Orleans three times. I love that city! But the French Quarter is crazy — never know what’s going to happen at any time.

I sprained my knee just walking down Bourbon Street trying to weave in and out of the action — and I wasn’t even drunk! Seems to me if I was going to injure myself, I should have at least have been trashed so I didn’t feel any pain! Oh well…

  131. Thanks VAlilac. I wonder if Sean Daly will review Adam’s album once it’s released and what cheesetastic rating he give it? It may be hard to be objective without having the razzle dazzle. :P

  132. Kris actually has a large hardcore internet fanbase. Go on ontd_ai or IDF or any of Kris’ unofficial sites and you’d realize that. Kris fans don’t post on this board much, but they are out there. Kris has 105,000+ followers on twitter ‘” that is more than any other AI8 Idol except for Adam ‘” it is more than twice as many as Allison has, for example.

I think you are basing your assumptions on this board. Kris fans don’t post much on this board ‘” maybe because every discussion on here eventually seems to turn into something about Adam, which can get quite frustrating at times, since not everything is, or should be, about Adam.

I’m not saying he doesn’t have internet fans, but that there are not as many as Adam’s (he’s probably closer to Danny’s level?). Almost all the AI sites are flooded with Adam fans, and when you look at something like Google Trends, Adam clearly is the one with more traffic. But I do believe that Kris is quite popular. He did win, after all. Plus, he had a strong run on the show vote-wise. He just may be more like Carrie, who did not have the largest internet fanbase either. Or he could be Jordin too, for that matter. But I do think he’s popular but that a larger percentage of his fanbase is not rabid.

That said, there is no evidence that Kris has a large, hardcore fanbase on the Internet or outside of the Internet.

    Huh? He won! LOL

  133. What makes me nervous about Kris numbers is that it goes in the direction that season 8 as a whole may not be that popular as the ratings were down throughout the year.

Valenitn- you hit the nail right on the head with your post. And if Adam’s numbers are low too, I think I can finally believe the ratings dip was not due to DVR’s and viewing parties.

  134. Q3

Again…go over to ontd_ai.com. They LOVE Kris. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone over there discuss Taylor Hicks…

there are also a bunch of unofficial websites devoted to Kris. KrisAllenNation, KrisAllenAddicts jump immediately to mind.

And 105,000+ followers on twitter is no evidence? That is WAY more than Chris Daughtry has, for example.

You guys may be shortchanging Kris and his fans — again.

Now I don’t know if LLWD is going to end up being a big hit. Maybe it will be, maybe it won’t. It’s WAY too early to know anything. Only a handful of radio stations have even played it yet. And it would be nice to see more evidence that Jive is actually trying to promote Kris and the single. I know he’s gotten radio interviews, but I haven’t seen much actual advertising for the single or the upcoming album.

But I don’t know how #15 on the ITunes pop chart and #25 on the overall ITunes chart is somehow horrible. Out of all the songs that are released, that seems pretty good to me.

    Tinawina

Depends how you define rabid. Kris’ fans may be very loyal — they just might not be all that vocal about it. Kris has said that much of his fanbase is laid back (I’m an exception, obviously!)

  135. Seeing the itune numbers today also makes me start wondering about Kris’s huge fanbase. Why are they not buying in droves? If it is b/c people did not know about it unless they are internet stalkers, what was the Davids’s secret? Maybe they could share that secret. I was just really hoping to see more movement today-up not down.

  136. we don’t even know what he being ‘mobbed’ means ‘” it could have been a handful of people coming up to him, which I don’t know if that’s ‘mobbing’ so much as ‘annoying’ .

I think it was more than just a handful and annoying. He was escorted out of the club the back way.

  137. For international folk, I’m pretty sure that US customers can buy a song, download it to their computer, and then e-mail you that song. It’ll be a file in their iTunes libarary in the M4A format. You could pay them by sending an iTunes gift care to their e-mail address. ITunes songs are no longer protected as far as I know.

That would be a gray area legally, I suppose, but ethically, you would have paid for the song and had it downloaded just for you, so I’d be able to sleep at night on that deal.

    Just sayin.

  138. Susan M

Still interesting how of all the releases happening this fall (including the 10 he mentioned) Adam’s name is one of three in the headline and his is the photo used. People out of the Idol bubble know who he is.

It’s more than interesting, it’s wonderful to see, and frightening too, when you realize the amount of expectation our boy has on his shoulders with this album.

    But mostly it’s wonderful. :D

Why do I have a feeling that Adam’s life at the moment is a lot like that Cheers song lyric:

    “Where everybody your name
And they’re always glad you came”

  139. If it is b/c people did not know about it unless they are internet stalkers, what was the Davids’s secret?

David A had a significant amount of radio play before his song hit I-Tunes, much of it on Z100. And David C got a premiere on Popeater (which gets a HUGE amount of hits ) and media coverage of said premiere elsewhere. And both had very large, very active internet fanbases to boot.

Depends how you define rabid. Kris’ fans may be very loyal ‘” they just might not be all that vocal about it. Kris has said that much of his fanbase is laid back (I’m an exception, obviously!)

Dude, I’m not sure why you are arguing with me, since I’m pretty sure we are both saying the same thing. LOL. I think Kris has a lot of fans but they are not as active on the internet as Adam’s.

  140. edit: NO BLOG ON BLOG COMMENTS. If you keep baiting posters, I will put you in modearation

I have high hopes for both Adam and Kris (as well as for Allison). But it’s unrealistic to expect them to outperform artists who have established track records. Then throw in the lousy economy and the fact that the music business has been in a downward spiral for the last couple years, and it seems like it would be better to scale back on the expectations a little bit.

  141. A few thousand fans talking about Kris or Adam on the Internet does not a huge fan base make. The first week of an Idol’s sales always reflects the Idol fan base. Not to worry, Jordin did fine with a pretty small fan base. It can be done.

  142. And 105,000+ followers on twitter is no evidence? That is WAY more than Chris Daughtry has, for example.

Twitter is no evidence whatsoever. From those who have had twitter for months, Jordin has the biggest following and Daughtry has the least following. Of course, it means nothing.
ONTD_AI is full of Adam fans and many happen to be Kradam fans. Some of those may like Kris, but they’re not big fans. And when it comes to support his career? They won’t even move a finger. Let November come and the honeymoon will be over.
Kris fansites don’t really have the traffic most popular idols have.
It’s not that Kris doesn’t have fans, he does. I think what everyone’s saying is that compared to others he doesn’t have much internet presence.
His career does not depend so much on that. Radio airplay is what matters right now. The rest are details.

  143. arghh, the single is not yet available on Itunes Canada. Why aren’t they more in synch?

  144. What makes me nervous about Kris numbers is that it goes in the direction that season 8 as a whole may not be that popular as the ratings were down throughout the year.

You have a point, but I really do think that it’s too early to make any judgements be it about fanbase, or show popularity based on 1 day’s sales on Itunes. Let’s at least give it a week before we start making conclusions.

  145. I just think, as an Idol WINNER, that single should have shot up to at least the Top 10 of iTunes on the first day (and stay there for the first week of sales). That’s what happened for both David’s last year. That’s what’s happening with Carrie’s single right now.

The fact that it hasn’t just shows me that Kris’s fan base isn’t as large as the 2 Davids and is more like Jordin Sparks. Like I said, it could still grow. Jive is known for pushing singles on the radio really hard.

  146. Archie had a lot of radio play for his single before it was released. And his fanbase is rabid, to say the least. He has way more followers on twitter than any Idol, current or former (including Adam). And the tweens (which appears to be the core of his fanbase) seem more likely to automatically buy stuff than older fans, who might be more careful to pick and choose what they spend money on.

If Kris’ single drops down the charts in a hurry, that’s a problem. But 36 hours after it hit ITunes (which is about how long it’s been) seems a little early to start panicking.

  147. catching up and everyone prob moved to newer thread

terraj, thx for the link to the old Sean Daly article. I must have read it at the time but am still surprised to read that he didn’t like ACIGC.

  148. And you can have a huge fanbase (like Taylor Hicks) and have your sales collapse after a month. Jordin had 1/3 of Taylor’s sales the first week but went on to outsell him by alot. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

  149. Leome

Um, who do you think it is who have trended all the Kris-related things on twitter? The people on ontd_ai. Just last night, it was the ontd_ai who made the push that got LLWD to trend at #1 on twitter. Same thing with #KrisAllenisarockstar and the couple of other Kris-related subjects — ALL of which ended up trending at #1 on twitter.

You are mistaken in thinking they are going to forget about Kris come November. They have organized a gifting thread for LLWD already. And they are very excited about Kris’ album…

It’s insulting to say that Kris has no big fans on ontd_ai (or any other site)…that they are all Kradam fans who care more about Adam. Yes, some are Kradam fans who care more about Adam. Some are Kradam fans who care more about Kris. But some are Kris fans who don’t care much at all about Adam (Likewise some are Adam fans who don’t care about Kris).

I’m assuming you aren’t an ontd_ai member (I AM, by the way), because you don’t seem very aware of how much support Kris has over there.

  150. Hi, everybody. I brought my post over from the Zodiac thread.

Has a description of what Aimee would write for Adam ever been posted here? On TWoP someone posted this: “She was asked a while back on her twitter what type of song she would write for Adam and she said something like WLL with a more straight up rock beat, she also named Freddie Mercury as her favorite singer of all time.”

Well now….that just makes me very interested in the song Aimee wrote for Adam! I hope we can find out some information soon of who actually got their songs on his album and what his single is!!

  151. Archie had a lot of radio play for his single before it was released. And his fanbase is rabid, to say the least. He has way more followers on twitter than any Idol, current or former (including Adam).

Jordin has the most followers on Twitter.

And the tweens (which appears to be the core of his fanbase) seem more likely to automatically buy stuff than older fans, who might be more careful to pick and choose what they spend money on.

I think the opposite is thought to be true. Teens are more likely to illegally download, adults are more likely to buy.

I do wholeheartedly agree that its too soon to start panicing. All that is happening now is about the kind of start a hardcore fanbase gives you, and is not an indication of what kind of legs a song will eventually have.

Color me cynical but I think the use of Adam’s name in headlines and his photo in these articles is more about his celebrity right now than his music. Music and pop culture critics and editors know that AI has a huge fanbase and that this year, it is Adam that sells – and that may save their jobs in a shrinking news industry.

But I’m with you on this one – I’ll take it, whatever their motivations, and hope that by next year at this time, it will be more about his music.

  153. jpfan – Unbelievably there’s a huge group on the planet who are completely unaware of either of these guys.”

And this is so very true. I actually bravely attempt to discuss AI S8 and the wonder that it was from time to time with people outside this internet bubble. What a find is vague recognition about Adam, but only about half the time and the rest of the lovely 9, not so much. Shoot, with the crowd I run in, most people still don’t know who Jordin is.

Radio play gets the music out there. Kris’ new song is just as good, and somewhat better than a lot of stuff that is already out there. If he catches up new fans, it will do well, his CD will sell and he will be able to continue to do what he loves for a living. I think that’s really possible for him. He’s young, too, so he’ll have the energy for the crazy schedule and the hard work that is ahead.

I pray that Allison gets the media and publicity that she deserves. She is amazing, she just needs to enunciate. I think American Idol does a great job of teaching enunciation to its contestants, it’s one of things that keeps me coming back. She also has boundless energy and a passion for singing. I suspect she’ll make it over the long haul, just as Kelly Clarkson has.

Adam? Well he’s is a completely different league than anyone I have ever seen on this show. His album might completely turn me off. (although I’m sure I’ll love most of it, really) I am not a fan of Lady Gaga, Goldfrapp or electronica in general unless there is some mean guitar. But being a fan of his is really a fun ride, so I’m sticking around for the good times.

  154. Let all remember that this is not a typical release for an idols single. So, what we see as good/bad is kind of skewed because this has not occurred before. I sure there is a huge difference in release the single on a Friday vs Tuesday. Many people may have not realized that it was being released Friday since initial reports from the media stated it would be Tuesday. I would be very interested to hear a statement from Jive on their strategy.

  155. I’m assuming you aren’t an ontd_ai member (I AM, by the way), because you don’t seem very aware of how much support Kris has over there.

LOL I am. Why do you think they need an anonymous post every week? Because they need at least one day of the week where they can be real and tell the truth. And you’ll see in last night’s one how much people are hating on Kris and they even admit on voting for other songs against LLWD.
Trending on twitter, following him is all different than buying his music. They’ve had other idols trending on twitter, people who don’t have that much of a fanbase.
Seriously, I’d not trust ONTD_AI to show how many fans Kris has or not.
I think the number of people on Kris official website is more telling.

  156. Some of Adam’s fans have huge expectations for him. Isn’t he already a better rock singer than Freddy Mercury and Robert Plant put together? :) And the big expectations for the winner ended when Daughtry kicked Taylor Hick’s ass in sales. It’s an open field out there. Maybe Allison will be the big seller of S8. Anything is possible.

  157. hhmmm… I wonder if they will release Adam’s song on itunes on a friday with no banner and no announcement in their newsletter.

I think before we declare Kris a loser, we should allow him to get some publicity on itunes and more radio play.

And the big expectations for the winner ended when Daughtry kicked Taylor Hick’s ass in sales. It’s an open field out there. Maybe Allison will be the big seller of S8. Anything is possible.”

that’s one of the reasons this ride is so much fun.

  159. Color me cynical but I think the use of Adam’s name in headlines and his photo in these articles is more about his celebrity right now than his music. VAlilac, I get what you’re saying, but the point being made was that Adam isn’t really known outside the AI bubble. (Besides, we don’t know anything about the music at this point other than buzz and speculation.)

Some of the biggest recording artists in history (Madonna and Mariah Carey, for starters) are releasing this fall, yet they mention Adam in the headline and his is the only picture being used. It’s definitely interesting.

hhmmm’ ¦ I wonder if they will release Adam’s song on itunes on a friday with no banner and no announcement in their newsletter.”

I don’t agree with the way Kris’ song was released either. I know this has been discussed in another thread, but even with my limited knowledge of this industry and the way it works, it seemed like an understated release of a new song by a promising new singer.

I can’t imagine Adam’s stuff being released without hoopla, but it remains to be seen how all of this is going to go down. It takes a while for a new song to catch on. I pray for radio play. Don’t stations respond to requests anymore? I think it’s a good grass roots way to support a new song in the industry.

“I think before we declare Kris a loser, we should allow him to get some publicity on itunes and more radio play.”

No declarations over here. Time is the only measure of success for any musician. As long as keeps doing what he loves, he’ll be able to make a living. I think he has a big enough fan base to sustain that.

  161. girlygirl: Q3, Again’ ¦go over to ontd_ai.com. They LOVE Kris. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone over there discuss Taylor Hicks’ ¦

there are also a bunch of unofficial websites devoted to Kris. KrisAllenNation, KrisAllenAddicts jump immediately to mind.

Of course, I go on ontd_ai.com or KAN.com. But what do 2,000 or 5,000 Kris fans who post on ontd_ai.com prove?

My comment was NOT that Kris didn’t have committed, passionate fans. I was talking about whether Kris has a large enough core fanbase to make his single and album a big hit. And IMO no Idol alum before has had that kind of fanbase, so why should we expect that Kris does?

  162. I pray for radio play.

Prayer won’t get radio spins. It takes cash money. Figure probably half a million on up in radio promo expense, plus the cost of the music video. Almost all of it coming out of the artist’s wallet.

  163. Is it at all possible that some of the people who know they are going to buy Kris’s single intentionally wait until next week before they buy?
Because realistically a song released Friday is hardly going to compete well with songs that have been out since the beginning of the week.

So to me it would be logic to postpone the single purchase until it could count into a full week’s worth of sales (assuming of course that you care about the charts). Is it possible that people think that way, or am I just weird?

  164. jpfan: Some of Adam’s fans have huge expectations for him. Isn’t he already a better rock singer than Freddy Mercury and Robert Plant put together? And the big expectations for the winner ended when Daughtry kicked Taylor Hick’s ass in sales. It’s an open field out there. Maybe Allison will be the big seller of S8. Anything is possible.

And most of Adam’s fans have realistic and conservative expectations. (And all the Adam fans posting on this site tend to be realistic about his sales prospects.) Mine got moderated a whole lot why I watched the Top 5 Idol show and saw Adam almost eliminated and further when Adam came in #2. I just hope he can do as well as Archie did.

And talent and great music doesn’t always mean commercial success? Freddy Mercury/Queen and David Bowie didn’t have huge #1 hits albums on their first release. Queen hit #1 US with their 8th album. And Bowie has a #3, #4 and #5 album in the US but never had a #1 album. Even Led Zeppelin didn’t hit #1 US until they released their second album. So it is possible to admire Adam’s vocal talent, and still not think that he’ll be #1 on the charts — ever.

BTW Taylor Hicks had a #1 Billboard single, and look what that got him. I am fine if no one from AI8 has a #1 hit — and I certainly don’t expect it this Fall.

  165. Kris should sell much more than Adam since he is the winner of AI and he seems to have won by a huge difference. So, his sales should reflect that difference. Adam is just the runner-up, so our expectations for his album sales should be lower.

  166. Kris will be fine. This is a catchy, radio-friendly song. Kris is adorable and photographs beautifully, so when the video comes out, I’m sure it will get a ton of play and drive sales even more.

Though I’m confused about the Friday release, I think it is better that it was released closer to the radio release date. We’re quite the instant-gratification society anymore. We hear a song, we like it, we download it in the same minute very often.

Kris has done exclusives on two of the highest-rated radio shows in the country in those five days, right? Not to mention being the star of Slezak’s new show. And Jim’s. He’s doing great and will continue to do so, IMO.

All of this is probably correct, except that the economy is much worse this year — true unemployment is calculated to be more like 16%, and that might affect iTunes sales.

Kris’s fan base is out there, but not as rabid or extensive as Adam’s. Kris had more voters, not necessarily more fans…. and industry people tend to sometimes ignore Kris and focus on Adam…unfairly maybe, but they do…

  168. I don’t agree with the way Kris’ song was released either. I know this has been discussed in another thread, but even with my limited knowledge of this industry and the way it works, it seemed like an understated release of a new song by a promising new singer.

I don’t either. I think either something happened to push the release date forward (which would explain why Jim Cantiello reported the wrong date, which may have actually been the original date) or there is some key piece of strategy we’re missing or simply not privy to.

I think if we see the expected iTunes front page tile and an increased press push on Tuesday, and maybe updated single art that might be enough to confirm the first scenario. If not, I don’t know if we’ll ever know what drove that decision.

ETA: But as many have said, it’s a marathon not a sprint. Once he starts getting more radio play, I think there’s a terrific chance of a slower but still impressive build of sales.

Yes. Coming, in #2, disappointing, but reality. I think Adam is also being realistic when interviewers ask about his tour. He said he has to wait to see how well his album does. So, he is tempering his expectations as the majority of his fans. When I say he will do more than fine, I mean he won’t bomb, and yet not going to expect him to reach #1. Just like Kris is doing fine.

  170. With all this talk about the importance of radio play to making a song a hit, I have to wonder whether radio’s really all that important anymore. Historically, it’s been absolutely critical, but in today’s highly fragmented marketplace, does it have that much relevance? I, for one, NEVER listen to the radio unless I’m in my car (where else do people even listen to the radio, anyway??), and even there I don’t like Top 40 stations because they play such a mish-mash of genres I don’t care to hear, that I usually end up with something safe, like an oldies R&B station – nothing new happening there! I get all my news about new artists/songs based on Internet buzz and TV exposure, period. So far Kris is only getting the former – if I did not know Kris had released a single by seeing it on this site and a few others, I would not even know about it, because he sure hasn’t had any TV exposure!

As with everything else that has happened regarding Adam this year, I believe his case is unique and can’t be predicted based solely on comparisons to other Idols, past or present. I can’t even imagine all this talk about radio play being relevant when Adam’s first single is released. The world will KNOW, w/o ever hearing it on the radio, via TV and Internet, and if his team is smart, he will be ALL OVER Internet and TV media outlets – and more importantly, those outlets WANT him because demand is so pent-up for anything he does. The proof is in the fact that he’s at or near the top of everyone’s most anticipated fall release lists, not to mention the sheer volume of both industry and fan buzz he’s created.

Wow, I think this is my longest post ever. I usually keep my yap shut because anything said one way or the other fans flames, and I’m really just curious about the relative importance of radio play…. maybe for introducing new artists it helps, but if you’re already a fan, you’re going to KNOW the minute something’s available and you’re not going to sit around waiting to hear a song roll around every few hours – you’re going to be listening on your CD/MP3 players, leaving even less time to listen to the antiquated amorphous sonic blob called “radio”.

  171. GaryJ: Kris’s fan base is out there, but not as rabid or extensive as Adam’s. Kris had more voters, not necessarily more fans’ ¦. and industry people tend to sometimes ignore Kris and focus on Adam’ ¦unfairly maybe, but they do’ ¦

But people don’t buy music because of who “industry people” think is hot. Kris won Idol, he’s gotten essentially the same promotion that David Cook got plus additional buzz from things like the “Adam crush” story that didn’t happen last year. He will sell, and if the album is good, there is no reason he should do as well as David Cook — who released his album right into the same recession that is going on now.

Did Jive/19R kind of screw up with this single release — a cover/clone of The Script recording, Friday iTunes release, no press release, no iTunes ads, etc. etc. Yeah, maybe. But I assume they will add the promotion on Tuesday and then push it on radio in mid-October. IMO wait until the end of October for Kris’ single to show what it can do.

  172. Still it’s JUST as much of a huge leap to assume that the bar was filled with Idol/Adam-tards as some of you seem to think that people outside of the Idol bubble could recognize Adam.

Bottom line ‘“ none of us really know ‘“ do we?

That was totally my point. Somebody posted it as proof that he had a large following outside of the AI bubble and I posted that there are alternative explanations.

I don’t know which is true and I don’t think we can say. That’s all. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities that the people who mobbed them were AI fans (whether they knew he was going to be there or not) or that it’s all new fans that liked his RS spread.

I just thought of a case where Blake totally got mobbed at a Food Court that was not advertised. The mob just happened to catch him there and from the footage, he actually seemed a little shaken.

  173. THIS. Day 1 of sales most likely represents the hard core Kris fans buying. And if that’s the case, the hard cores could only get him to #28 on iTunes.

Well, it was the hardcore fans who frequent the Internet, or were listening to Z100 on Monday, or who listened to Ryan’s show on Friday. I’ve always heard that Kris’s fans were probably not Internet denizens, and the bulk of the other media was mainly in two cities. Seems possible that there are quite hardcore fans out there who don’t even know yet that he has a single out, doesn’t it? … Or maybe I’m missing some more mainstream force that they would follow … could be …. Where else has the information about the Friday Itunes release appeared?

  174. Kris should sell much more than Adam since he is the winner of AI and he seems to have won by a huge difference. So, his sales should reflect that difference. Adam is just the runner-up, so our expectations for his album sales should be lower.

Kris isn’t the one who’s upcoming album is on every “most anticipated CD’s” list, he’s not the one who’s going to have two singles out including one featured in a huge blockbuster movie, and he’s not the one who’s releasing on the biggest shopping week of the year. Maybe in the AI bubble he’ll be expected to sell more but the media is clearly all over Adam and they will have huge expectations.

  175. Are Idol itune singles usually released with a banner on itunes? Is it odd that Kris does not have one? I do remember a banner for Crush (I think it was for Crush) but I can’t remember anyone else.

  176. Maybe Allison will be the big seller of S8. Anything is possible.

I feel like putting my money on Sarver. He has 1000 songs on the book already.

  177. anthrogeek: With all this talk about the importance of radio play to making a song a hit, I have to wonder whether radio’s really all that important anymore.

Clearly, radio is loosing it’s importance. And for Idol top finishers, it is less important because they are well know before they release their first singles and albums — over 10% of Americans watched at least one Idol show on TV last year plus additional online viewing. And for all music, the internet is gaining in importance. Careers are now built as much from online radio, YouTube, MySpace, iTunes and Amazon digitial samples, and other online promotion as they are by the radio. And for some genres, the ones that appeal to young, affluent, educated, white audiences, it is almost entirely about the internet, online radio, late night TV, clubs and concerts. Almost anything but AM/FM radio.

For example, when David Cook released his lead single last September, he sold about 25% of the units before the Radio Add date. And it peaked before the Radio Add date.

  178. Are Idol itune singles usually released with a banner on itunes?

For the ones signed by 19R? Yes.

  179. Seems possible that there are quite hardcore fans out there who don’t even know yet that he has a single out, doesn’t it?

Honestly, in MY opinion, NO. If you’re hard core, you’re on the internet, following his Twitter or his Facebook or his MySpace. If you’re hard core, you’re looking out for when his music is going to drop.

That’s not to say there aren’t more (casual) Kris fans out there that haven’t heard about this yet. But his CORE base, should be on this like white on rice.

  180. I just hope he can do as well as Archie did.

Forget Archie. I’m just hopin for a Diana DiGarmo or a Bo Bice or a Kat McPhee or a Blake Lewis. If Lambert can match those other second place finishers in this economy, I’ll be happy. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

  181. For the ones signed by 19R? Yes.

I think it depends on the banner we’re talking about.
The non 19R signed ones (Jason and Brooke) got the same banner as the signed ones. It’s not those larger ones at the frontpage, those are for albums.

  182. Even Led Zeppelin didn’t hit #1 US until they released their second album. So it is possible to admire Adam’s vocal talent, and still not think that he’ll be #1 on the charts ‘” ever.

Q3 you are so correct…. Meatloaf whose Album “Bat out of Hell” never reached higher then number 14 on the charts but did stay on the top 200 for over 5 years went on to sell 43 million copies WW and is the 3rd most successful album in history… I would be very content if Adam’s album has a quarter of this result. It does not have to reach number 1 to be successful

  183. For example, when David Cook released his lead single last September, he sold about 25% of the units before the Radio Add date. And it peaked before the Radio Add date.

LO sold 109,000 it’s first week and over the course of 10 months ended up selling a million. Of course radio play contributed to that. Even when it wasn’t at it’s peak it’s continued to get spins. It’s just like how “Tattoo” went from 33,000 it’s first week to nearly 2 million. Airplay still plays a big factor in things.

  184. Interesting… As an “older” Idol fan, I rarely post on any of the forums because my interest lies in how the song moves me and not the microanalysis of the song here and other forums. Plus, it seems the same people are members of all the Idol forums and post the same ideas to each…usually slanted to favor “their” Idol. What I’m looking for are hard facts like release dates, interviews, etc.

Most of my “off air” listening is on XM radio where you don’t have to put up with a lot of chat and commercials. FM radio would die if it weren’t free.

I’m not sure how connected you have to be to be a “rabid” fan, but I would suggest that there are other ways besides dominating posting threads. My personal opinion is that Kris connected to a lot of fans that will snap up his album but have probably never bought a single. The last single I bought spun at 45 rpm’s and had a “B” side. For Kris, I think the album sales will be where the numbers are.

The problem..for me… with Idol is that we are sold on the singers based on what they performed on the show. Those songs were varied in genre and appealed to a wide range of age and musical taste. Once the show ends, this variety goes down the tubes and the album songs are aimed at the 13 to 25 age group because “they are the ones that buy”. I think this happened to Archie and I hope Kris can avoid it.

  185. Forget Archie. I’m just hopin for a Diana DiGarmo or a Bo Bice or a Kat McPhee or a Blake Lewis. If Lambert can match those other second place finishers in this economy, I’ll be happy. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

If that’s where his fans really think he is destined? I have to admit that I think this seems like an incongruent theory coming from somebody that thinks that “the kid who won” only won because of the “anybody, but the gay guy” vote. If that’s all he can sell, he soundly deserved the second place finish he got, IMO. If that. Diana freakin’ Degarmo? She only sold 47K her first week and went on to sell 168K. That’s grim for anybody and isn’t going to keep Adam getting the producers he’s getting this time. And it certainly isn’t going to pay for those huge numbers you keep throwing around for airplay. Might as well throw Justin into the pot.

  186. I think it depends on the banner we’re talking about.
The non 19R signed ones (Jason and Brooke) got the same banner as the signed ones. It’s not those larger ones at the frontpage, those are for albums.

I only qualified it because some signed Idols don’t get those banners. 19R ones get them. Some of the Idols signed to other labels get them. But not all signed Idols. Sorry for being unclear.

  187. I am wondering if the free allaccess download could hurt Kris download numbers.

  188. I think Hwc is playing the low ball game for Adam’s sales. However, oldtimers here know how badly you can get burned making the big predictions for success, so it’s perfectly understandable. ;)

  189. Q3: For example, when David Cook released his lead single last September, he sold about 25% of the units before the Radio Add date. And it peaked before the Radio Add date.

Trina: LO sold 109,000 it’s first week and over the course of 10 months ended up selling a million. Of course radio play contributed to that. Even when it wasn’t at it’s peak it’s continued to get spins. It’s just like how ‘Tattoo’ went from 33,000 it’s first week to nearly 2 million. Airplay still plays a big factor in things..

“Light On” was released online and was made available for radio airplay on September 23, 2008. It was released iTunes and Amazon on September 30, 2008. It officially went for adds on Mainstream Top 40, AC, and Rock radio on October 13, 2008. It sold 12% of total US units week 1 and an additional 10.5% of units week 2 — that a total of 22.5% of units before it got any notable levels of radio support. Then sales units gradually dropped from there — and is still selling. But it peaked on the charts in week 1.

Kris’ schedule is very similar to Cooks —

9/16/09: 22 sec. clip leaked in Arkansas, posted online
9/21/09: LLWD released online and made available for radio airplay
    9/25/09: iTunes release
10/13/09: Goes for adds on Mainstream Top 40 and AC.

My guess is that it will get released on Amazon and maybe other sites on Tuesday.

  190. I don’t understand how Lambert fans can have such low expectations. I’m not even a big fan, but that is crazy to me given his talent, his buzz, his PR, the movie, the investment they are making (songwriters, producers, etc), his fan base size, etc. I think he’ll be 200k+ his album drop week and be platinum faster than Cook was, with 2-3 platinum singles in year 1. His rabid fan base alone will buy many gift copies and push his numbers up. I think these are reasonable expectations for him given where he is at already. Anything less would be a shocking disappointment.

  191. lizland
I don’t understand how Lambert fans can have such low expectations.

Well, because he lost. And also because we know internet and media buzz is great and all, but it does not necessarily translate to sales, especially in this economy. And because regardless of the talent of all the Idols signed over the years, 19 does not have the best track record putting out a first album for them that truly highlights the best parts of that talent.

  192. IMHO, it is too early to be drawing any conclusions about how well Kris’ new single & album will sell based on the iTunes numbers.

Also, in wading through this thread and reading differing POVs in blogs, I’ve come to realize how confusing things get sometimes.

On one hand, Adam was coy re: his sexuality on AI and only chose to “come out” in RS for the buzz. With a flip of the script, he was an openly gay AI contestant (hence being recognized in a gay bar is to be expected).

Likewise, Kris’ huge fan base gave him a record/landslide AI victory. However, the initial numbers for LLWD is because he does not have the huge fan base as a Danny or an Adam.

It all can be very confuzzling for the uninitiated….

As the cliche goes, time will tell. I really think Kris will do very well in the long run as he has a very current sound and is a very appealing performer. Once his videos are released and he does his TV promos, he will be set.

  193. Wow, I didn’t read the original comment that way at all. ‘Name/face recognition’ =/= ‘large following.’

I’m sorry, but I took the original post as meaning the person thought that Adam was so well known, the people who don’t watch AI were mobbing him. That would indicate to me that he has a large following. Who would mob somebody if they weren’t folowing them? I’ll give the mobbers credit for not much, but I’ll assume they knew who he was if they mobbed him. There are sycophants everywhere though.

I don’t know how BestAI feels, but sometimes I feel like if I say anything positive about Adam, someone else will exaggerate it, and then mock that exaggeration. And they’re mocking something that they made up themselves. *sigh*

Welcome to the Idol world. I (and others) merely said that there was a slight hint of Dylanesque phrasing in Kris’s song (and added HUGE disclaimers that we were not saying he was as good as Dylan or anything) and were soundly mocked as if we said he was better than Dylan. I seriously don’t think the Adam fans are the only ones who feel they can’t praise their favourites.

  194. BTW – I just started reading through the thread (on page 1), but I just want to thank everyone for posting today about all the Idols! Last couple weeks has been all about Adam, Kris, and David Cook – its nice to hear what Matt, ‘Noop, Scott, Kellie, and Kat are doing too.

  195. 1- Adam’s musical style is decidedly more european than american
    2- Adam didn’t win
    4- Adam is theatrical
    3- Adam is gay
4- Adam has an OTT persona, certainly by American standards for a male performer (check Sean Daly’s Siegfried and Roy reference).

All these things make me think, that in spite of his sublime vocals and unearthly talent, Adam will not be a huge seller with his Idol freshman album.
I expect him to sell enough to ensure a second and a third album. I expect him to make most of his profits out of live performances including private gigs.
If he should end up having a number 1 single that goes platinum, then Yipeeee, Hurrah, Huzzah and Hallelujah. If not, and he ends up peaking in the top 25 Itunes, or whatever chart, then it’s all sugar and plums.

I expect him to have a long career, and to prove his worth over time. If that should fail to happen, then and only then might I implode.

So ETA to implosion, 8-10 years.

  196. Kirsten

That’s a fair point. I remember cringing when I read the direction that thread went after Dylan was mentioned. I knew exactly what you meant, that distinctive inflection on the last syllable in the phrase, and it’s one reason why I like the LLWD chorus so much.

  197. On the topic of news about a variety of Idols. I posted this yesterday but Elliott is doing a concert in NYC today. Here’s the info:

    http://www.rocksoffcalendar.com/calendar/events_detail.php?id=454&idshow=547

And I think Danny Gokey has his first post tour concert tomorrow at Mt. Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y. which is kind of in the NYC area.
I hope a Danny fan posts about the concert. I can’t imagine him doing anything but songs he covered on the show. It’s a slightly weird gig and I wonder how it’ll go.

  198. More tweets about the NO bar sighting’s, from the same source, which will hopefully put to rest the mobbing controversy. LOL

    Read from the top:

    @Gr8spiritwolf

Adam Lambert news: He didn’t get rushed at bar by a mob. Was loud when I got the call. Brother said Adam was actually shaking hands…cont

cont: and talking to every1, very nice and down-to-earth. Looked GREAT! Was 4 ft from him AND DIDN’T TOUCH HIM. GREAT self-control. lol

  199. Sunn, ITA with your 8-10 year implosion post.

Kirsten, I agree with your Dylan thing as well – it went off the rails pretty fast.

  200. He didn’t get rushed at bar by a mob.

LOL that there was no “mob.” Was it Kirsten and/or jpfan who called it? Kudos.

Once again, we learn the lesson that twitter is the DEVIL, and until we have confirmation from multiple twitterers it is best to take tweets with a bucket of salt.

  201. 1- Adam’s musical style is decidedly more european than american

I think this is quite reasonable.

I think he’ll …. be platinum faster than Cook was,

I think that is possible, because he is going to get a massive push throughout the christmas season ans he might have 2 high profile songs out during that time.

with 2-3 platinum singles in year

Could happen given the caliber of people he’s working with, but it is far from a guarantee. Only if Adam catches on like that. It will not happen on his fanbase alone.

A big breakout pop star these days looks like this … Two or three 2mil plus songs, an album that sells around 1.5-2 million, international hits. That is Adam’s best case scenario. And that ain’t bad.

These are the reasons I do not go OTT with the first album expectations for Adam. I love him, but I know he’s an acquired taste. That’s why I’m happy with the buzz… it means more people will be checking his music out when he actually releases something!!! Hurry up, Adam!

  203. soverymel: Once again, we learn the lesson that twitter is the DEVIL, and until we have confirmation from multiple twitterers it is best to take tweets with a bucket of salt.

So true. It has gotten so that I don’t even believe video snippets as they, too, can be out of context. Remember the short clip of Adam being chased down the med bldg stairwell by the paps? The longer version of that clip showed that it was a little less harrowing than it initially appeared.

  204. And I guess by the ‘moonwlk’ reference it is a dance track?

I am hoping the moonwalk reference is that the song has a very distinctive base line (love that!) like billie jean has (the song to which MJ introduced the moonwalk).

  205. BestAI (on the twitter stating that Adam was ‘mobbed’ inside the NOLA club)
At least we know he has name/face recognition outside the Idol bubble.

    Kirsten
Somebody posted it as proof that he had a large following outside of the AI bubble and I posted that there are alternative explanations.

    soverymel
Wow, I didn’t read the original comment that way at all. ‘Name/face recognition’ =/= ‘large following.’ When I saw the original tweet I thought, hey how cool, it looks like more than Idol diehards know who he is. Mostly because I figured what were the odds of a dance club in NOLA being packed with Idol fans.

Thank you sovermel. I can’t believe one sentence saying Adam has name/recognition outside of Idol bubble could be construed as saying having a huge fanbase outside of AI bubble.

Short story: I wore my eye of horus pendant for several days and was asked about it by people in different places. It is an unusual design, so it would create a curiosity. My first question to them was, do you watch AI? Half of them said “No.” Then I explained there was a contestant on there who designed it. They asked who? I mentioned Adam’s name. They said, oh yes, they know who Adam is. There is more detailed discussion that I won’t get into here. People outside of AI bubble know who Adam is and have become fans of his music just by word of mouth, RS magazine, or other buzz. Big fanbase? How would I know? Ive only talked to several dozen people about AI and Adam.

  206. I don’t know if this has been posted yet – Billboard’s review of Kris’ new single:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090925/music_nm/us_music_singles

    ARTIST: KRIS ALLEN

SINGLE: LIVE LIKE WE’RE DYING (19/Jive Records)

“American Idol” winner Kris Allen has wisely chosen to scrap his Kara DioGuardi-penned coronation song, “No Boundaries,” in favor of this impressive new single about seizing the day. “Live Like We’re Dying” originally was intended for Irish band the Script, but Allen improves on the unreleased version with a nuanced vocal and a nimble, rhythmic delivery. The tongue-twister verses work in spite of themselves, and even when Allen does his best Bob Dylan impression on the bridge, he emerges safely on the other side. It seems Allen is still emboldened by the risks he took on “Idol,” and those who voted for the singer-songwriter in May should be feeling the same after hearing the first track from his November 17 debut.

  207. anthrogeek: With all this talk about the importance of radio play to making a song a hit, I have to wonder whether radio’s really all that important anymore. Historically, it’s been absolutely critical, but in today’s highly fragmented marketplace, does it have that much relevance? I, for one, NEVER listen to the radio unless I’m in my car…

Q3: Clearly, radio is loosing it’s importance…And for all music, the internet is gaining in importance. Careers are now built as much from online radio, YouTube, MySpace, iTunes and Amazon digitial samples, and other online promotion as they are by the radio.

Well, perhaps I’m a fuddy-duddy, but I still learn most new music from the radio. And, in my experience, most online radio IS regular radio, just streamed. Back when MTV and VH1 actually played videos, I probably learned about new music there first. However, I haven’t PERSONALLY seen YouTube and MySpace break new music as broadly as those channels used to. Ergo, I still believe in the power of classic radio.

  208. Oh, and BTW:

Sunn: ETA to implosion, 8-10 years.

Which is still a wink in cosmic time for our resident glittery alien!

  209. The person who tweeted yesterday that Adam had been “mobbed” at that New Orleans club/bar has now changed her story.

LOL – why am I not surprised. Another example of “twitter is the devil”

  210. Q3: Max Martin, Andreas Carlsson & Desmond Child’s song looks like it made Adam’s album:

    http://www.cheiron-music.com/calendar/releases.html

snuffles: I don’t see Demond Child’s name listed on that site. Where are you getting that?

This was posted on the IDF album thread earlier today. But here is what I can confirm:

The cheiron-music.com release calendar only lists the Cheiron artist who are involved in a song. For example, only Andreas Carlsson is listed for Katy Perry’s “Waking Up in Vegas”. But the songwriters of that song are: Andreas Carlsson, Desmond Child and Katy Perry.

Regarding this song for Adam, Andreas Carlsson frequently collaborates with writers Desmond Child and Chris Braide — but he always has a co-writer. I recall reading on Andreas blog that he was collaborating with Desmond Child but I can’t find it again because the blog is in Swedish so Google is useless for me. Perhaps someone else remembers it or can find it. It was memorable because it was before the tour and 1. Andreas wrote about how ever top producer was trying to work with Adam and 2. because it contained some references to Katy Perry. I’m sure I’ll figure out how to refind it. The was also a separate reference to the Adam collaboration in a piece about Ace Young’s album for which Andraes and Desmond co-wrote songs.

In any case, it doesn’t actually mean that Desmond Child cowrote the song that Max Martin produced. Just that they worked together on a song for Adam.

  211. interesting explanation of the time line and methodology for marketing new music

Only listened to the first couple of minutes (guy was boring) but that really puts the whole rush of the Idol freshman records in a whole different light! No wonder they often disappoint. (I mean if the record ideally should be finished five months prior to drop date for optimal marketing, I’d imagine that a significant amount of time was invested in the creative process as well.)

  212. interesting explanation of the time line and methodology for marketing new music

Wow, ideally, 5 months lead time to release AFTER the master’s been completed! Not gonna happen with the Idols, that’s for sure.

  213. Well, perhaps I’m a fuddy-duddy, but I still learn most new music from the radio.

I love the radio. Used to listen to it every day before Adam came along and I got glued to my computer. There were many years that I didn’t have a TV (I didn’t want one) and listened to the radio or played music instead. I see this happening in my future again.

  214. Valentin, I never thought about what is going to happen to Allison. She gets no buzz at all.

I don’t think Allison was signed based on her having a huge AI fanbase but just on the fact that she has the potential to hit big. They will probably promote her similar to a new unknown artist.

  215. However, I haven’t PERSONALLY seen YouTube and MySpace break new music as broadly as those channels used to.

Yup. There is no such thing as a long term selling album that does not have radio support somewhere, with a few very rare exceptions. I agree it is not as essential as it used to be, but it is nowhere near unnecessary.

but that really puts the whole rush of the Idol freshman records in a whole different light! No wonder they often disappoint. (I mean if the record ideally should be finished five months prior to drop date for optimal marketing, I’d imagine that a significant amount of time was invested in the creative process as well.)

Yup x2. That’s why I’m inclined to give the labels a break for bad 1st single choices and early marketing mistakes. They are doing this in record time.Of course, a bad first song could easily lead to no more shots. It is kinda scary. For idols, the whole thing is like a game of sudden death. I guess that’s the price to be paid for being on the show.

Sunn, you are so freakin’ 100% correct !!!! Great post.

The 7 Sexiest Latin Reality TV Stars
    by Lee Hernandez |

David Archuleta: It’s entirely possible that the word ‘cutie’ was invented for former American Idol finalist, David Archuleta, 18. It’s also fitting that Archie’s first single (which made it to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart) was called ‘Crush’ because every Latina staffer (and every Latina I know) has a major crush on the 18-year-old Honduran with dimples. David also has an infectious smile, and as we all know, an amazing singing voice, but what really makes him stand out is that he’s a genuinely nice guy.

    Finally, words from Adam :-)

Is this the name of the single?

  219. @Q3 – as far as I can tell this is an entry written by Andreas Carlsson

It’s in Swedish of course but it basically says that he does work with Desmond Child (my Swedish is terrible so I don’t actually understand what they were doing – something with a piano I think) and it might also say that the two of them work together on something for Adam (who is the talk of the town at the moment and every songwriter wants a piece of the cake – loose translation). That is what I get from the entry. For details maybe saga can help :)

ETA: since in the blog he just mentioned a Desmond (no last name) I just assumed it was Desmond Child

  220. Regarding Kris’s sales numbers, my uneducated observation from this week is that his team is going for the slow build up / sustained success rather than great big splashy entrance. Given that that was Kris’s MO on AI, I can’t complain.

It occurs to me today that had I not been in this summer-long obsession, I very likely wouldn’t know about Kris’s single. I don’t listen to the radio stations that carry Ryan Seacrest and Elvis Duran, there’s no front-page Itunes publicity for me to notice, my preferred station has played the song 1 time, at a time I don’t normally listen to the radio (and without twitter stalking, I would have never known about it.)

I’m sure I’m not the only person in this situation – so I think the iTunes numbers are pretty impressive, all things considered.

It will be interesting to see if the iTunes placement changes on Tuesday, and if the next couple weeks before the official radio add date brings the song more publicity where I live. I’m not going to get immersed in the angst – and find myself skimming over/passing by forums/posts that get dragged into the gloom and doom. It’s too soon to tell anything, too early to judge the wisdom of this release and PR strategy.

  229. Thanks RemusL, excellent Billboard review. Good start for Kris

Sunn, your post makes sense, however I believe that if he got a smokin hot song he could sky rocket the sales. I do believe that’s THE song (understand HIT here) that makes a difference and reading about famuos group that weren’t much big sellers until the 2nd, 3rd,… album, it kind of corroborates this. I haven’t done research on this but I feel it’s quite right.

  230. I think the blog is from Swedish singer/songwriter Kim Fransson.

I’m assuming the blog you’re referring to was the link you posted before – that’s also from Andreas Carlsson I think (signature at the bottom is AC and I ran into it while googling Andreas Carlsson and Adam Lambert).

Either way LOL at the mechanically translated posts – somehow I doubt that wings were mentioned.

I agree that we don’t have a lot of male performers like that nowadays, but in the 80s, Adam’s style would have fit right in (which is why he gets compared to so many artists from the 80s). A lot of the most popular male artists of that time fit one or two of those descriptions and European performers dominated the charts. The music industry drifted away from that style in the 90s, but I get the impression that people are ready for a change and artists like Lady G and Katy Perry are bringing back that 80s style. I’m not even an Adam fan, but I think he’s hitting the music scene at a perfect time. What also works for him is that he has almost no competition in that area as a male artist.

  234. Ok was looking up the info on Andreas Carlsson for you guys. This is what he posted on his blog, and yes it is in Swedish.

He is saying that Westlife was in the studio this day and that was fun. Westlife came to the Cheiron studio for the first time 10 years ago and they were then called Westside. They discussed their new CD and it ended with Desmond and me behind the piano. He then says that they (and I assume he means him and Desmond) worked late the night before with material for Adam Lambert. Andreas explains that Adam is some guy that is “the talk of the town” right now and that all songwriters wants to be on his record.

  235. They discussed their new CD and it ended with Desmond and me behind the piano.

    Yay, I wasn’t totally wrong!!!

ETA: and thanks saga. It was nice to get an accurate translation, which I was not able to provide (I’m sure my Danish teachers would be pulling their hair out by the roots if they saw my poor attempts, after all we do have to read both Swedish and Norwegian texts in high school. LOL).

  236. I did a search on Andreas blog and he mentions Adam three times. The first time is to comment on the result of the finale. Adam was his favourite and he was sad he didnt win but he also commented that he woulnd’t mind writing a few songs for him anyway and we’ll see how that works out. The other time is the post I mentioned above and the third time he just states that he is waiting for a co-writer and that they will write stuff for Adam. He doesn’t mention who this co-writer is.

  237. Thank saga. The Google translate function is not very good. Some languages — Italian for example — the translations are really very funny. This is the first time I tried it on Swedish. Babblefish is not any better on Swedish-English.

Also, Andreas went to Koi for sashimi — but there is one in West Hollywood and one in NY. (The other two are in Bankock and Las Vegas.) But I always go to the on in LA and forgot about the other locations. So ignore my brilliant deduction that he was in LA.

One problem is that it seems to omit the omlauts. I saw the word hà ¶ra (which means listen) being turned in to hora (which means whore). A tiny detail but oh so important!

  257. Valentin432
Normally I’d agree with your comment but it’s a vote once per IP address site so it’s harder to spam and there are >7K votes. Not scientific by any means, but may be indicative

  258. Normally I’d agree with your comment but it’s a vote once per IP address site so it’s harder to spam and there are >7K votes. Not scientific by any means, but may be indicative

Didn’t know about the one address per IP, so it’s definetly more difficult to spam it.
The problem is that generally, the fansites get hold of these polls and talk everyone into voting (for what purpose? Only god knows).

And no matter how you put it, if you go on the street and ask about Madonna, Mariah Carey and Adam Lambert, I doubt it would be the result.
Remember that on street poll that MTV did in NYC, I think 2/3 were waiting for Carrie’s album and 25% for Adam.

  259. Love how David Cook tweeted back to Allison.

Anyway, Cookie – the guys who delivers puppies to friends and spent part of his last vacation day at a pizza party with 3rd graders – has been spotted playing blackjack at the Borgata where he and his band are doing a show tonight.

  260. And WTAF, AmericanIdol466 with all those extremely inappropriate Adam-Allison sex questions that they tweeted Allison?????? What is the MATTER with some people?

Hee, yeah, I laughed at it. The MTV video shows ~25 people in NYC being polled and the article never says if any more people were polled so the percentages in the article are statistically pretty meaningless. MTV also said the poll was “hilariously unscientific.” oh well, at least the polls give us something to talk about…

  262. Anyway, Cookie ‘“ the guys who delivers puppies to friends and spent part of his last vacation day at a pizza party with 3rd graders ‘“ has been spotted playing blackjack at the Borgata where he and his band are doing a show tonight.

Not surprised by that. Cook seems to really enjoy “gaming.” Thank god, he now has the money for it … one assumes.

In any event, I spent part of my day listening to Rickey Minor give a talk at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC. He didn’t talk too much about Idol, but said that 1) he doesn’t interact much with the judges other than to exchange courtesies; 2) that he enjoys boogeying with the contestants and the closer proximity performances rather than the ones where he and the band are up in the rafters; 3) that he was originally asked to come on board for “Pop Idol”. (I don’t know whether he meant in England or here.) However, the producers decided — since they were going low budget and the performers were amateurs — that they were going, instead, with recorded tracks and didn’t need his expertise. But, three years later, they called him back and brought him on board….

So someone needs to tell me, did Rickey show up three years into Idol? When did he first appear? Otherwise, he may have been invited to work on Pop Idol in England.

In other words, when did they go with a live band on Idol?

(If I remember anything else he said, I’ll include it later. There’s a podcasted interview with him on the National Book Festival site, but it’s not the talk I heard him give today.)

  263. Chris Daughtry will sing “Drugs or Jesus” with Tim McGraw at Andre Agassi’s charity event tonight.

    Some of Chris’ tweets:

Rehearsing “Drugs or Jesus” with Tim McGraw… http://twitpic.com/j9sjr

I’ve worked with Tim McG before. I love him and…I just met Faith about an hour ago!! So awesome!! It’s gonna be a great night:)

Annnnddd…my buddy @danecook is here as well!! Life is good:)

  264. An interview (podcast) at the National Book Festival with Rickey Minor. Since this is not the talk with him or the Q&A I heard at the Pavilion, I didn’t listen to it all the way. It’s over 18 minutes long:

    http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/2009/authors/Minor.html

By the way, the Librarian of Congress, James Billington, and his wife personally came out to greet Minor and Billington helped to introduce him. He didn’t do that for everyone, so I’m assuming Minor was important.

Just adding… Simon Schama has nothing to do with American Idol, but he was a marvelous speaker. Wish there were a podcast with him uploaded. Will look later.
    http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/2009/authors/Schama.html

  265. Hee, yeah, I laughed at it. The MTV video shows ~25 people in NYC being polled and the article never says if any more people were polled so the percentages in the article are statistically pretty meaningless. MTV also said the poll was ‘hilariously unscientific.’ oh well, at least the polls give us something to talk about’ ¦

At least it seems they took random sample, the only bias being the location (NYC) that should have disadvantaged Carrie.
I don’t know exactly how many people they asked, but I thought it reflected much more accurately the truth (after all Carrie has already sold 10 million albums and is one of the most famous music stars out there) than an internet poll that claims people are waiting 4 times more eagerly for Adam’s album than for Madonna and Mariah Carrey combined, but YMMV on this.

  266. The problem with polling “the man on the street” about who’s album they are looking forward to hearing is that the real answer for the vast majority is NONE! They may go ahead and pick a name from the choices they are given, but they aren’t waiting for anyone’s album and have no plans to purchase it.

  267. than an internet poll that claims people are waiting 4 times more eagerly for Adam’s album than for Madonna and Mariah Carrey combined, but YMMV on this.

internet polls are spammed and if the editors of the sites don’t know that well what can you do.

LMAO. Thanks for that. This thread needed a good laugh. Who films this stuff?

  269. I don’t understand how Lambert fans can have such low expectations.

It’s a case of “once burned, twice shy,” and “better to beat low expectations than to miss high ones,” I think.

Plus, Good grief, let’s not jinx the guy!

  270. David Cook and his band mate, Andy Skib, appear to be in awe of their opening act (Tonic) for tonight. Check out their latest tweets.

#thedavidcook “watching Tonic open for us right now. life is so stupid and amazing. love these guys!”

#andyskibb ” http://twitpic.com/jab3q Tonic, opening for US! Crazy”

  271. Wow, I love Tonic. Played the hell out of that Lemon Parade album.

  272. the -_- that she put on the end is the equivalent of a blank stare. She’s calling it a stupid question.

Obviously, but still, why acknowledge it in the first place (of course a lot of the questions from that particular tweeter were even worse).

Yes, exactly – that was my point – why even humor the original tweeter by answering their question. Should have ignored it, but, I guess kids will be kids…which of course makes that question even worse. Ok, nvm.

No doubt! I am an Adam fan and I do not have low expectations. I think the expectations have more to do with the history of 19E not always doing the best by the talent they have in front of them. For me, I think Adam’s debut is going to be amazing, because he is.

  274. than an internet poll that claims people are waiting 4 times more eagerly for Adam’s album than for Madonna and Mariah Carrey combined, but YMMV on this.

You’re kidding me?! Madonna and Mariah have more fans than Adam Lambert? What fishbowl are Madonna and Mariah living in?

  275. No doubt! I am an Adam fan and I do not have low expectations. I think the expectations have more to do with the history of 19E not always doing the best by the talent they have in front of them. For me, I think Adam’s debut is going to be amazing, because he is.

Exactamundo. My fear is in 19 – not in Adam. His voice will make crap sound good – but hopefully that won’t be needed :-) Still, with so little time to get the albums together, and so much up to chance, plus the blandified nature of idol debut albums, you can’t help but at least be cautious with expectations.

  276. Remember that on street poll that MTV did in NYC, I think 2/3 were waiting for Carrie’s album and 25% for Adam.

Carrie’s been around for what? more than couple of years, off course lot of people on the street would know and heard her name and would vote for her. We know about Adam just this year and he got 25% on the street of NY? So yeah.. I take 25% as a good sign for Adam.

  277. So someone needs to tell me, did Rickey show up three years into Idol? When did he first appear? Otherwise, he may have been invited to work on Pop Idol in England.

In other words, when did they go with a live band on Idol?

Idol went with a live band Season 4. They also upped the age limit to 29 and introduced the Top 24 that year.

Season 4 was the season of good changes.

  278. AWESOME!!! THANKS STEVE!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

thats cool sassycatz my friend went there.I think my English teacher is giving her extra credit if she tell the class about it…

  279. I’m late, again, and no one’s here, but whatever~

Any sales beyond that will have to be from radio play, promotion and Kris winning new people over. Jordin’s ‘Tattoo’ was a slow grower and I think that is Kris’s best hope right now.

Yes, this. From what I gather, Kris’ situation is a lot like Jordin’s was at this stage, with Adam being his Blake. For Kris, it all hinges on radio play. If he gets radio play, then he will sell singles–although following Jordin’s career as a roadmap, he might not sell a lot of albums to go with it. It took her two HUGE singles to go platinum, and I’d count Kris lucky to have even one.

edit: NO BOARD ON BOARD TALK

  280. yeah carrie looks gr8

I have low expectation 4 the album because I’ll FLOVE it anyway…

  281. Mixed Race Idol?

While we go on and on about stuff here, here’s a little dose of what goes on outside our U.S. bubble.

Thanks for sharing that article. Really makes me appreciate American Idol’s and our own culture’s inclusiveness.

  282. Michael Johns and Brooke White have a concert going on right now in Murray, Utah. And Archie is there to support them!

Mjohnsmusic: Here in Salt Lake again I love this city. At The Murray tonight and my bud David Archie is coming down tonight will be good to see him.

DavidArchie: oops, didn’t mean to direct a tweet to @realbrookewhite. But her, @bentonpaul, and Michael Johns’s Utah concert is tonight! Murray Theater!

realbrookewhite: @DavidArchie no prob my friend, don’t ever have to apologize for helping us spread the word:)

DavidArchie: Benton is a cool French-speaking/singing cat. Michael Johns is up next!
less than a minute ago from txt

  283. Michael [Johns] was interviewed on Andrew Cook’s radio show today, and he chatted briefly about David!

Andrew was saying how it must be really cool to see Idol buds and such performing. And then he mentioned everyone going to Cook’s show in LA a few weeks ago. And Michael said, “That is cool, man. I love seeing Archie and stuff. I think Archie might be, uhh, well, I know he is. Actually he is coming down to the concert tonight in Salt Lake, which is really cool. Archuleta, I haven’t seen him in a while.”

Aww, then he goes on and talks about how it’s always cool to see Idol friends and how he’s proud to be able to say he’s still good friends with everyone and no one’s changed. I LOVE SEASON 7. <3

  284. Aw, cute twitter stuff from David Cook & Andy tonight – Tonic was opening for them:

    >> @thedavidcook: watching Tonic open for us right now. life is so stupid and amazing. love these guys!
    >> @andyskib: Tonic, opening for US! Crazy http://twitpic.com/jab3q

  285. Expect a lot of flailing from Cook fans tomorrow – twitpic shows him wearing a twin of that snaps&buttons shirt that was so incredibly hot a few weeks earlier.

  286. twitpic shows him wearing a twin of that snaps&buttons shirt that was so incredibly hot a few weeks earlier.

    Heh, I saw those… I’m not a flailer but I might have done a *semi-flail.*

(I also was not planning to go to the Charlottesville DC show but someone was selling 7th row tix so… I think I’ve lost my mind).

  287. I thought most of the gay men were in love with Kris not Adam

    You thought correctly

  288. Expect a lot of flailing from Cook fans tomorrow ‘“ twitpic shows him wearing a twin of that snaps&buttons shirt that was so incredibly hot a few weeks earlier.

Awww Trina is there tonight. And she really loves that shirt. LOL Those little things that make a girl happy.

  289. Wow, Tonic opened for Cook!!! I would almost expect it to be the other way around…well, I guess not today. Maybe a few years ago (Tonic was big at one time….) But that’s awesome. Cook is awesome. Ryan Star is awesome. The show I am going to see WILL BE AWESOME (counting down to 10/10).

  290. Sarver is having a Twitter party, for those who are interested.

Tho he is only answering using one word. Either b/c of the connection (probably) or b/c he is tired (possibly). I think my questions are too detailed for the party.

  291. Rickey is also having a Twitter party. Check out Kris Allen’s response to one of his tweets. I think it’s fair to say that Kris is still holding a grudge. Can’t say as I blame him…

Rickey: Boxer-briefs. Wearing them right now. RT @Loonyluna00: boxers or briefs
    38 minutes ago

    KrisAllen4Real: @Rickey Take them off.

  292. I don’t think that was the real Kris responding to Rickey, he is no longer following Rickey.

  293. Evidently in SLC tonight Michael Johns, Brooke and Archie all took the stage at the end of MJ and Brooke’s concert there for a couple of numbers. I’m hoping for some videos.

  294. I kinda feel sad for Sarver. He’s tweeted a couple of times about people dropping him from twitter, and it kinda looks like he’s trying to have a twitter party and almost no one showed up. :(
I guess reality is setting in a little too soon.

What about Lil? I never hear anything about her. I even forgot she was on the tour towards the end. What are her plans? Anyone know?

  295. I just have zero pity for Kris and his wife. One car…??? That’s a sad fate in life. Horrible…

I guess the tabloids are hard up for news.

What about people that have to take buses. Or gfb walk???

  296. I don’t think that was the real Kris responding to Rickey, he is no longer following Rickey.

Hey, you’re right! I can’t believe I’ve been following the fake Kris all this time. Actually, I’ve been following both the fake and real Kris. I’m flabbergasted! How did that happen?

  297. houstonrufus –

Someone does have vids of the SLC show tonight. She’ll put up vids when she gets home.

Evidently Archie joined Brooke and Michael for “Let It Be” and “Proud Mary”.

  298. I can’t wait for the videos. He really stood out wearing that bright orange tshirt…
    Pic 1
    Pic 2
    Pic 3

I hope he didn’t steal the show too much.

ETA: Michael Johns was wearing a white dress shirt with black tie and black slacks. I guess he wanted to look Mormon? Haha j/k.
    Pic 4

ETA2: @Indigo: “Guys, David had the biggest grin on his face the entire time he was up there, it was wonderful. Micheal came up to him a couple of times to prompt him to sing because you know how he is, not wanting to upstage others when it isn’t his concert. When he did sing though he sounded AMAZING! I have never been to a David concert, but I want to SO MUCH MORE now!”

  304. mj, what is with the m Adam Lambert in the Tampa Bay albums article? that doesn’t appear on the site, is that your own special touch? just curious.

Carrie’s video looks interesting. I always get the impression from her that she tries to copy things that have been a hit, like she tried to duplicate BHC with Last Name and failed and now with this video it certainly appears she’s going for the “Britneyesque” theme from Circus.

  305. Ozarka, thanks for posting those vids of Brooke, Michael, Benton and David. So much fun to see all of them together, having such a great time on stage. It was generous of Brooke to share a song so special to her. I adore her version, and someday I hope to hear David sing the entire song, his way.

  306. If you watch the last part of this video of David Cook singing AdaM at the Borgata (3:42 to the end) you’ll get an idea of why his fans are so dedicated. The girl in the video had a small sign that said she’d like to sing with David Cook. The video shows what happened when he noticed her. Lucky girl.

  307. Ah the joys of Amazon. Idol fans can amuse themselves for hours on end over those numbers. They are helpful in seeing how albums compare in terms of demand. Just realize that as few as 10/20 albums in an hour cause major swings in the numbers.

Ah the joys of Amazon. Idol fans can amuse themselves for hours on end over those numbers. They are helpful in seeing how albums compare. Just realize 20 albums sold in a hour can cause huge swings in the numbers. And if I want to a show at the Borgata and someone in front of me had a sign, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty.

It takes more than 20 albums sold to be at #35/#36 for 2 hours on Amazon Japan. Japan is 16%-19% of the world music market and Amazon. Second only to the US and more than double #3 UK and #4 Germany.

  309. If you watch the last part of this video of David Cook singing AdaM at the Borgata (3:42 to the end) you’ll get an idea of why his fans are so dedicated.

Oh, jeez. That doesn’t help me quit him at all. Hee!

  310. I didn’t say it took 20 albums to be #35 on Amazon. I just meant a change in those few albums can change the ranking there in an hour. Japan may sell 19% of the world’s music but how much of that does Amazon sell?

In the US it’s a pretty small percentage of total sales. I think Norah Jones was #1 on Amazon US for three months and her total sales there were 30,000. But I’m no expert on Amazon Japan. Although I’ll bet they sell less CDs than Amazon US.

  311. And, BTW, John’s videos are always AMAZING so I’ll be spending some time watching the rest!

  312. Idol went with a live band Season 4. They also upped the age limit to 29 and introduced the Top 24 that year.

Season 4 was the season of good changes.

Thanks! I’m surprised by that info. That’s why I thought Rickey Minor was referring to “Pop Idol” in the UK, rather than “American Idol,” first, because he actually called it “Pop Idol” in his talk. But, I’m guessing that’s the title they were going with in the development stage before the show became “American Idol.” Also, I know that the first season of “American Idol” was a crap shoot in terms of it being a success. They just couldn’t have predicted it. But how was it viewed in the second and third seasons? Had it not proven a success after season one?

I didn’t watch season one, but I did watch two and three, and I had completely forgotten that there wasn’t a live band. It had no live band, ever? Not even in the finale?

I thought the show had caught on enough in either one of those two seasons to have garnered a bigger budget and the recognition that it could attract quality contestants. So, when Rickey said that he was told, “Never mind. The budget won’t be big enough, and besides, the talent is too amateurish” and he wasn’t asked to come aboard again until three years later that he was rolling in “Pop Idol” UK with the first season of American Idol.

I guess the post season careers of the contestants from the first few seasons, plus the continued popularity of the show, brought the changes for season four, including Rickey and the live band.

  313. I think it’s fair to say that Kris is still holding a grudge. Can’t say as I blame him’ ¦

That is a fake Kris Allen. Using Twitter name @KrisAllen4Reai
Capitalizes the last i. Uses same background and pic as Kris.

Kris twittering suggestively to Rickey unlikely, so went to check if fake still there.
