Kris Allen tweets, “About to work on a demo for Shut That Door (or whatever the title is). This song is so much fun!” “Shut That Door” is a new song Kris has been previewing in live performances.

A moderator on Daughtry’s Official Website posted this message: We had some very productive meetings this week for album #3, which we are rushing to finalize in time for a 2011 release, as you’ve no doubt heard from Chris himself. I also heard some new songs this week and can tell you it’ll ABSOLUTELY KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF!

Looks like we’ll have some new music from Daughtry sooner rather than later!

Katharine McPhee tweets, “Songwriting with the amazing @Siamusic today …we already burned thru one song. Having way too much fun.” Singer/Songwriter, Sia has written with Adam Lambert and also assisted Christina Aguilera on The Voice.

American Idols to kick off tour in Utah on Wednesday

This year there are no Utah-born-and-raised contestants à la David Archuleta or Megan Joy. But the Utah show does kick off the 2011 tour, which will end in New York in September.

Before opening night, The Salt Lake Tribune was able to talk to two of the Idols — Abrams and Langone — about what it was like to be in the world’s biggest talent competition.

George Ballas, Inventor of the Weed Whacker, Dies at 85

George Ballas loved tending to his lawn with meticulous care, but the 200 or more trees crowding a two-acre expanse behind his house in Houston posed a problem: how to get around the bulging roots and manicure close enough to achieve the near perfection he desired.

Then one day in 1971 he took his car to a car wash and was watching those whirling soapy brushes sweeping the grime away. Aha! Could something like that trim the grass and slash the weeds around the trees, between the rocks and under the fences?

George Charles Ballas was born in Ruston, La., on June 28, 1925, one of three children of Charles and Maria Lymnaos Ballas. Besides his son Corky, who has performed on the television show “Dancing With the Stars, ” Mr. Ballas is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Maria Marulanda; another son, George Jr.; three daughters, Michelle Pritchard, Maria Jamail and Lillian Miles; a brother, Peter; and seven grandchildren.

‘SYTYCD’ Judges Discuss Top 16 Week Eliminations

Thursday was a rough night on “So You Think You Can Dance, ” as the Mr. Personality of the show, Robert “Woo Man” Taylor, and Miranda, who was rising in the ranks and seemed like Nigel Lythgoe’s new favorite, were both sadly sent home.

As Nigel revealed to reporters backstage immediately following Thursday’s results show, he was the lone dissenter in the non-unanimous decision to send Miranda home (he was leaning towards Ashley), and things got heated backstage as the four judges–Nigel, Mary Murphy, and guest panelists Lil’ C and Kristen Chenoweth–debated.
