Idoloonies: Cheering Idol’s Top 13, and Cooking Up Season 11 Fixes (Hint: Fire the Judges!)
With American Idol‘s weird and wonderful tenth season in the books, it seemed like a good time for Season 6 MVP Melinda Doolittle and me to conduct a freewheeling post-mortem on the last five months of stellar singing, infuriating judging, and bulked-up producer manipulation that led to the Scotty McCreery-Lauren Alaina finale.
Among the topics we’re covering: Nigel Lythgoe’s parting gifts to “doped-up racehorse” Lauren (one of which was outfitted by Idol‘s costume department in a pair of black hospital scrubs); “I Love You This Big” and “The Mom Song” (aka the respective “radio-ready” “singles” foisted on Scotty and Lauren); the oft-repeated catchphrases Randy and J.Lo used to hammer home a pre-spun narrative regarding their favored contestants; and the gloriously cathartic release we got from watching the Wednesday night results-show finale.

Haley Reinhart Has ‘A Lot Of Faith’ In Post-‘American Idol’ Career
“I’m really, really lucky to have some strong women that have powerful voices that are coming back into the scene … that’s very inspiring, because that’s what I’ve wanted to do for a while, ” she told MTV News on Tuesday (May 31), mentioning such icons as Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Grammy-winning jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding, Duffy and Janelle Monáe as her inspirations.
“All these chicks have a really, really cool, unique sound, and I’m really thankful that this is coming about, because it’s the right time for me right now. It’s happening, and I have so much throwback that’s come along with me, and it seems like it might be a stretch to get there, but especially now with this new wave coming through, with this raw, refreshing good musicality being provided, I have really good feelings and a lot of faith.”

The recently formed Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA), an offshoot of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which does a successful film awards show in January, announced Tuesday that Cat Deely of So You Think You Can Dance will host the Critics’ Choice Television Awards on June 20 in Beverly Hills.
“Cat Deeley instantly puts our awards on the map, plus she ensures an entertaining and lively show, ” said Joey Berlin, acting-president of BTJA.

Fingers have pointed at Simon Cowell and Fox reality chief Mike Darnell.
Some British tabloid reports have fingered Fox reality chief Mike Darnell as having pulled the trigger — supposedly leaving X Factor producer and star Simon Cowell devastated over the decision. But a source with knowledge of events makes it clear that Darnell should not be the one to take the blame.
“Mike has been a supporter of hers from Day 1, ” said the insider. “He’s been nothing but infatuated with her. … Everyone understands that Simon has a lot of say-so in his shows.”
Darnell declined to comment on the situation, and obviously he has no stake in antagonizing Cowell as Fox prepares to launch what it hopes will be a massive new franchise with him in the fall. “You can imagine what an uncomfortable position this is for Mike, ” the source said. Cowell’s rep was unavailable for comment.
