Harry Styles Drops ‘As It Was’ First Single and Video from ‘Harry’s House’

Harry Styles As It Was Music Video

After a smash world-wide tour last year, Harry Styles is gearing  up for a new album era. On Thursday (March 31), the former One Direction singer dropped the first single “As It Were” alongside a music video.

While Harry’s earlier work harkened back to singer-songwriters and glam artists of the 70’s, “As It Was” is buoyed by a cheery, propulsive 80’s synth beat.  The underlying riff is fremescent of A-ha’s “Take On Me.”

In the cryptic song, Harry refers to himself in the third person, “Harry, you’re no good alone/Why are you sitting at home on the floor?/What kind of pills are you on?”

The video does not bust out the rotoscope, but it is very colorful, with Harry spending most of it dressed in bright red, eventually stripping down to a tattoo-revealing tank top, and then down to a pair of tight swim trunks.

He and a love interest navigate a geometric world, missing each other, losing each other as they try to connect. The video ends in a flourish of ballet moves.

“As It Was,” written by Harry Styles, Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, is the first single from the upcoming album 3rd studio album Harry’s House which is coming out on May 20. Harry revealed the surprise album only 3 days ago.
