Grace Vanderwaal Rocks Radical New Look and Sound on New Song

Grace Vanderwaal Don't Assume What You Don't Know

Hey there. Grace Vanderwaal isn’t your 12 year old America’s Got Talent winner anymore. She’s 17 years old with a new look and edgier sound.

Grace revealed a close cropped hair cut last year, which she shows off in the official music video for her new song “Don’t Assume What You Don’t Know.” In it, the singer-songwriter trades in her signature ukulele for an electric bass and an alternative rock sound with a beat.

“It’s about someone facing the truth about Hollywood, going through that process and realizing that they’re in too deep,” Grace says about the new song. “It feels really good to express yourself so freely. It’s empowering and very healing.” The singer dubs her new sound “Alternative Infused Pop.”

“I am very smart, and I usually know what things are going to make people talk or grasp attention, but that I didn’t expect in the slightest,” she told Nylon in a recent interview about the reaction to her buzz cut. “I realized the world is so much more sexist than I thought. People jump to mad conclusions for a woman having short hair, like ‘[she’s having a] mental breakdown or on drugs.’ What does that say about us?”

“Lately, I don’t know what’s going on in my brain or what happened to me, but all of a sudden, I like to make people uncomfortable,” the singer told Nylon, “And I want people to ask themselves why they’re uncomfortable with whatever I’m doing.”

Grace is currently working on her next record. Additionally, the singer will resume her acting career in a sequel to the Disney film Stargirl.
