During a break from Glee, Amber Riley danced her way to the Mirror Ball trophy with Derek Hough on Dancing with the Stars. Now, beginning with last week’s episode, she’s back on the musical comedy. As the spunky Mercedes Jones, she’s moved close to the gang to record her major label debut.

And what’s a major label debut without an original song?  The new tune, “Color Blind” was written by Claude Kelly and Emile Sande and will be part of  Glee’s “Bash” episode, airing next Tuesday, April 8.

The singer unveiled a live version of the song, a pretty and emotional ballad, on The Queen Latifah Show this morning.

As a bonus, Amber uploaded the Glee version, also an acoustic piano ballad, to her soundcloud!  You’ll be able to download it on iTunes with the rest of the Glee songs on Tuesday, the day the episode airs.

What could have moved Mercedes to sing such a heartfelt and melancholy song?  “Bash” deals with some heavy themes, including the aftermath of gay hate crimes. But, Mercedes is also struggling with some residual romantic feelings she has for her ex-boyfriend and new roommate, Sam (Chord Overstreet).  We’ll have to tune in next week to find out!
