Dexter Roberts Let Out of His American Idol Contract? (UPDATED)

A big thanks to Lyndsey Parker from Yahoo news for quoting my post in her story on the disappearance of finalist, Dexter Roberts, from the American Idol Live tour.  I attended the show last night, and once again, Dexter was missing.

It’s a weird thing–Dexter disappearing from the tour with no explanation from TPTB.  But the mystery deepens as Lyndsey quotes an anonymous source:

Fans speculated that Dexter was sick or having vocal issues, but now a source close to the Idol camp tells Yahoo Music’s Reality Rocks that “both parties mutually agreed that he would be released from his contractual obligations to continue performing on the tour.” No further explanation was given.

I wonder why? Is it his health? A disagreement? Something else? When tweeted a question about Dexter’s whereabouts,  fellow Top 10 finalist, Jessica Meuse, replied that he was “Unfortunately dealing with an illness…and we aren’t sure when he will be back.”

But according to Lyndsey’s source, it looks like Dexter won’t be back at all.

The weirdest thing about this, and what makes the entire situation so odd, is the lack of an OFFICIAL statement or explanation from American Idol. You’d think the producers would announce Dexter’s departure–if just as a heads up to fans who are buying tickets to the tour hoping to see him perform live. But instead, Dexter disappears off the tour and is eventually spotted in his hometown of Birmingham, looking healthy, and seemingly booked for local appearances.  Dexter’s absence was never even announced at show time (the usual protocol when an Idol misses an appearance, usually due to illness).

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the quote in the Yahoo article is an OFFICIAL STATEMENT from a publicist. So, OFFICIALLY, Dexter is off of the tour.
