David Cook and More Canceled Shows Due to Covid-19: Is This a Trend?

Hopefully this is not a sign of the future. David Cook was looking forward to playing two shows at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City this weekend. But he found out during rehearsal that both shows were canceled.

“Hey all,” the American Idol season 7 winner wrote on social media, “So, as we finished rehearsal today, I got a message that the Utah shows scheduled for this weekend are cancelled for the foreseeable future, due to a positive COVID test result of someone involved in the show production.” The singer continued, “Super disappointed and bummed. We were very much looking forward to getting out in front of you guys and making some noise for you. We will keep you updated on ticket refunds and other details as they progress.” And he signed off, “Stay safe everyone.”

The Capitol Theatre concerts scheduled for Friday August 6 and Saturday August 7 would have  “virtually transformed” the Capitol Theatre stage in downtown Salt Lake City into a London rooftop. The concert also featured  The Grimm. David planned Meet & Greets for fans after each show. A bummer, indeed.

By late spring, concerts bookings ramped up

By late spring of this year, concert activity was beginning to pick up as COVID vaccination rates climbed and cases, hospitalizations and deaths decreased. Just as life started to feel normal again, a new variant of COVID, Delta, became dominant in the country. Unfortunately, the new variant spreads much faster than the OG version of the virus. And vaccine efficacy isn’t as high, although vaccinated people are with small exception, safe from hospitalization and death.

The trouble is, with this new variant, folks are catching it like crazy, including the vaxxed and unvaxxed. Although the vaccinated are safe from bad outcomes, they can still pass the virus on to other people. Thus, whether that infected person in Utah was vaxxed or not, the venue had to cancel the concert in order to keep everyone safe.

Another problem is vaccine hesitancy, which is accelerating the spread of the virus. While vaxxed people can catch and spread the disease, they are less likely than the unvaxxed. And there are lots of folks who, for whatever reason, don’t want to get the jab.

Constantine Maroulis says GET VACCINATED

Another American Idol alum, Constantine Maroulis from season 4, has also had concerts pulled due to COVID. And his reaction was very blunt.

“Now you selfish b**tards that are unvaccinated are taking money out of my pocket…,” Constantine wrote angrily. “Just when things start to normalize slightly… Just had some shows taken off the books because of the uptick in infections… Trust the science get vaccinated today!! #GetVaccinated.”

Additionally, The Masked Singer COVID-19 testing caught 12 positive cases while filming season 6 last week. However, it did not impact production. FOX did not halt any tapings. Yet.
