The results are in...Clay Aiken wins the Democratic house primary in his home state of North Carolina. It’s been a roller coaster ride for NC politics this past week. The American Idol season 2 runner-up won last Tuesday’s primary by such a slim margin–less than 400 votes–that the NC Board of elections had to canvass the votes from each county and count provisional and absentee ballots.
Then, in a tragic and sudden twist, Clay’s opponent in the race, 71 year old Keith Crisco, died yesterday after a fall at his home.
Clay ended up getting 40.86 percent of the vote, while Crisco received 39.49 percent, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, which issued the final tally on Tuesday.
Congratulations to Clay, under very sad and unusual circumstances. His campaign is currently suspended out of respect to Crisco’s family and friends.
When Clay’s campaign resumes, he’ll have a tough fight on his hands against Republican incumbent, Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.) who is expected to keep the seat.
