One of the most hotly anticipated moments of Sunday night’s (Nov 19) American Music Awards was singer and former The Voice coach, Christina Aguilera paying tribute to the late Whitney Houston on the 25th anniversary of her movie, The Bodyguard. You likely remember the film: Whitney played a character based loosely on herself who gradually falls in love with the hired security played by then-hunky Kevin Costner. The film spawned hit song after hit song.
It was a no brainer to enlist Christina, a Whitney acolyte, to sing a medley of smashes including “I Will Always Love You,” “I Have Nothing,” “Run to You, ” and I’m Every Woman.” Plot twist? Her performance has received mixed reviews. To my ears, Christina sounded flat in spots and seemed to be straining on the big notes. Also, some of her phrasing seemed questionable. Watch for yourself right here.
