Here’s more from the Oprah interview with Filipino pop singer and Glee star, Charice, that we teased yesterday. Last summer, the singer came out as gay. Her more masculine presentation had some fans wondering if she’s was transitioning to male. Does Charice come out as transgender to Oprah, as was hinted in the short promo?
Well. Not really.
“So you struggled with transgender, did you?” Oprah asked. “Were you thinking about transitioning to become a male?”
“Not exactly transitioning to a male, but basically my soul is like male,” Charice revealed. “But I’m not going to go through that stage where I’m going to change everything—not change my body. I would change, like this look: Cut my hair and wear boy clothes and everything, but that’s all.”
To be honest, that was the answer I was expecting from Charice. It’s unreasonable to assume that every boyish or “butch” lesbian will ultimately identify as a male.
About her gay identity–it was something Charice understood from a very early age. “I knew when I was five,” Charice said, “I was in grade school and I saw this girl and I felt different. I didn’t know what it was but I just knew that time, like it felt special. And when I was 10 I was like, ‘Oh, that’s it. I’m gay.’ I found the word.”
Watch the short clip from the interview here, The sitdown with Oprah is from the OWN series, Where Are They Now? Charice’s segment airs this Sunday (Oct 19) at 9 pm.
