Carrie Underwood sang “Yesterday” at the Emmy Awards Sunday night (Sept 22) in tribute to the Beatles, the band who brought joy back to America after the Kennedy assassination in 1963.
Or at least that’s what we’re being told!
Interestingly, Carrie doesn’t change the song’s pronouns, keeping the integrity of the original work intact.
The entire segment was a little random. A tribute to the Beatles? The 6os? To a time in television history?
Is the context that Carrie got her start on television–as the winner of the 4th season of American Idol–just as the Beatles did back in 1964? It’s not made very clear. Nevertheless, I thought Carrie did a lovely job.
Sir Paul gave Carrie his blessing before the telecast.
The coolest thing about singing "Yesterday" on the #Emmys is the sweet letter I got from @PaulMcCartney giving me his blessing to sing it!
