Carrie Underwood Recalls American Idol as She Readies for Tour

Carrie Underwood talks tour remembers American Idol on Today

Carrie Underwood is gearing up to head out on the road for her Denim & Rhinestones tour. The Today show sat down with the American Idol season 4 winner to talk about the show, her family, and working out.

But the reporter, Sheinelle Jones, also has a special connection to Carrie. Back in 2005 when Carrie competed on and then won Idol, Jones was a young reporter working in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The reporter covered the Oklahoma native’s American Idol journey straight through to the finale.

“It could all go away at any second.”

Carrie remembers how she felt at the time. “At that point, it was all very new, very fresh,” she reminisced. She had no idea if fame would last, so she tried to enjoy the moment and have fun, while trying to move forward. But she realized that “it could all go away at any second.” She added, “I think it’s kind of important to treat everything like that. It makes you grateful.”

When Carrie visited the station, she was so nervous as Jones took her around to visit radio stations. The reporter remembers Carrie getting her first gown for the finale. The show told her not to worry about cost. “Just find something beautiful.” She said, “you mean I don’t have to get it at the Gap?” And now 17 years later, Jones pointed out, “look at all these rhinestones.”

The two, both young and early in their careers, shared their hopes and dreams with each other. Carrie observed “I think we’ve done well!” But she added, “I still think we’ve got a lot to do, though.”

What to expect from the Denim & Rhinestones tour

The Denim & Rhinestones tour is traveling to 43 locations across the country and will keep Carrie on the road for the next 6 months. She plans to have her husband Mike Fisher and two young sons visit her on the road. She’ll also travel back to Nashville inbetween tour stops.

As far as what to expect, the tour will include some pyrotechnics and Carrie will recreate the work with silks she did for her Las Vegas residency.  Carrie will be out on tour with fellow American Idol alum Jimmie Allen as her opener.

“I feel like with every tour we get better and more confident, and we get to play a little more with production and things like that,” said Carrie in a press statement. “So, I hope everybody can just expect to have a great time when they’re out in the audience. I remember going to see concerts and I would go buy the albums and make sure I knew all the songs that were going to be played and just like get ready for it. So, I hope people kind of do that. I hope people wear their denim and rhinestones to the shows. I think that’s gonna be a lot of fun looking out on the audience and just seeing all the bling and the fringe and the denim. I think it’s gonna be an experience, so I’m excited and I can’t wait.”

Hate My Heart is Carrie’s Next Single

Recently, Carrie announced that “Hate My Heart” from The Denim & Rhinestones album would be her next single. “‘Hate My Heart’ was definitely part of my desire to have fun on this album. I wanted songs that would be exciting to perform live and would fill up an arena, and that’s exactly what we’re about to do with The Denim & Rhinestones Tour,” Carrie said in a press statement. “This one is definitely going to get everyone up on their feet and having a good time. It was great writing ‘Hate My Heart’ with Hillary Lindsey and David Garcia, who I love collaborating with, and also getting to work with Hardy, who brought a cool vibe and an energy to the track.”
