Jonny West finished American Idol 2020 in the Top 5. However, the show’s 19 Recordings didn’t sign him, and the singer-songwriter didn’t compete in the Comeback competition with 10 of his fellow season mates.

Instead, Jonny has been steadily releasing music via 3T Entertainment. The latest is an EP, The Thing About This Is… which features inventive arrangements and searingly honest lyrics.

Prior to the seven song EP’s release, Jonny wrote on Instagram, “the bulk of this project was co-produced by fellow band members @tejaslh & @dannyaustinmanning who’s talent and love for good music pushes me in the best of ways,” Jonny continued, “Cover art captured by @openforedit who was able to snap the essence of angst these songs dwell in. i hope this music takes you on a similar path that it took to create. love, J.”

Last year, Jonny had a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Margie Mays, who also competed on American Idol alongside him. She offered a brutal assessment of the breakup on social media. It’s no wonder heartbreak figures prominently in the lyrics of the singer-songwriter’s latest songs.

Listen to all 7 tracks below, including music videos for “NUMBER,” “homicide” and “GOLD RUSH.”

The Thing About This Is… Tracklist

1. Belief
2. damaged

A few days before the EP dropped, Jonny posted a jazzy song featuring Jonny mostly rapping. Called “Wave (The Thing About This Is…),” the song is not on the EP. Instead, it serves as a teaser for the set. Sample lyric: “I’ve been on TV, but you still haven’t seen me.”

Additionally, Jonny played an EP release show on June 24 at the Mr. Musichead Gallery in Los Angeles. Check out a video compilation from the night.
