The Voice 28 Knockout: Dek of Hearts Harmonious Lady A Cover Earns Them The Mic Drop
The Voice Season 28 Knockouts aired another one hour long episode on Monday night (Nov 10), and the big highlight of this show was a duel between Team Niall Horan country artists. Dek of Hearts and Kayleigh Clark. (Read our Recap)
Country-pop trio Dek of Hearts ultimately beat Kayleigh, a pure country singer who possesses a clear as bell tone. The trio sang “What If I Never Get Over You” by Lady A which was the first song they sang as a group, 15 months prior when they formed. They have been gigging at bars ever since then.
In rehearsals, Niall Horan remarked, “I think we are used to seeing a lot of uptempo, happy smiling Dek of Hearts, but it is nice to see this side of them–softer, creating a wall of sound in a different way.” Mega-mentor Joe Walsh, guitarist of The Eagles, noted, “That kind of harmony, sometimes it just happens naturally.” They impressed Niall, and especially impressed Joe. Emily, one of the group’s members, felt grateful she got to sing with the two guys of the group.
Kollin started the song with a pleasant crooning country tone. Next, Emily came in with a pure and stand out tone, reminiscent of the original lead vocalist on the song, Hillary Scott who makes Lady A have such a recognizable sound. They then begin to harmonize and that’s where the magic of Dek of Hearts is as they sing delivering such a good blend. Dylan brought a more pop sound when he came in, and Emily nailed a few belting notes, before the group hit a gorgeous climatic harmony. The performance showed a new side of them, and was very well done.
Dek of Hearts won The Voice Knockout plus Team Niall’s Mic Drop Button
Competitor Kayleigh, sang a solid version of “Blue” by LeAnn Rimes which showcased her tone in an effective way. However, Dek of Hearts performance was slightly more dynamic, so I would lean towards them.
Reba McEntire related to Dek of Hearts, remarking, “I grew up with The Singing McEntires, and y’alls harmony, and y’all aren’t even kin, is so good.” Snoop Dogg called their harmony “magic.” Niall added, “That wall of sound you make is so beautiful. There’s not many vocal groups you hear today where all three can sing.” He’s truly torn, but he picked Dek of Hearts to advance, and then gave them the mic drop button, putting them in contention for a spot to perform at the Rose Parade. He calls out their consistency as a reason he chose them.

The other standout of the night was Rob Cole from from Team Michael Bublé who had his strongest showing to date with a simple yet artistic version of “Wondering Why” by The Red Clay Strays performed on the keyboard. He could be a dark horse to win the whole thing if he keeps advancing.
