The Voice 28 Recap: Knockouts 3 Live Blog with Videos

The Voice season 28 Knockouts continue on to night 3 in an episode airing on Monday November 10. Each of the coaches–Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg will partner with two new mega-mentors–Zac Brown (Snoop Dogg, Michael Bublé) and Joe Walsh (Niall Horan, Reba McEntire) to help out with performances. Plus a Mic Drop Button twist will allow each coach to select an artist to compete for America’s vote and a chance to perform at the Rose Bowl. The competition gets fierce–no more steals are saves in this round.

Conrad Khalil, Ryan Mitchell – Team Reba

Reba describes the “Carson Callback Card” to Joe Walsh, which allowed the host to choose a no chair turn to save. Carson chose indie rocker Ryan Mitchell for a second chance. Conrad is a one chair turn. Reba coaches him to use his face and eyes to tell a story. Joe advises that he scale back the adlibs. Ryan and Joe share sobriety stories and it’s heartwarming! Joe has 31 years (I have 33. The sober ones and the ones who struggle always have a soft spot in my heart). Joe advises Ryan not to overdue the dynamics.

Ryan Mitchell – Zombie by The Cranberries

I’m not convinced that Joe’s advice to not sing “loud” was the right advice. What’s a rock singer if they aren’t letting loose on a big anthemic number like Zombie. Nevertheless, Ryan delivers an emotional performance. The song is about war, but Ryan connects it to his “war” with substance abuse, from which he’s currently clean and sober.

Conrad Khalil – Closer by Ne-Yo

Conrad’s falsetto is very pretty. He brings the heat on the chorus and takes the advice to scale back the adlibs, which is always good advice. He seems nervous, but otherwise, good job. My taste dictates that Ryan win, but Conrad certainly has a chance.

Michael calls his tone gorgeous and believes Ryan exceeded expectations. He’d pick Ryan. Snoop calls Ryan’s performance “5 star” and admires Conrad’s control. As usual, he will not pick a winner. Niall also admires Conrad’s control and is impressed with Ryan’s growth. He believes Ryan has way more left in his tank. Reba calls Conrad “very focused” and that Ryan connected to his song emotionally. Reba picks Ryan, Conrad is eliminated. Yay! Reba calls Ryan, as an alternative rock singer, “different” than anyone else in the competition. Carson is proud.

Rob Cole, Marty O’Reilly – Team Bublé

Marty has a family he hates being away from while touring. He chooses the Joe Cocker version of “The Letter” originally recorded by The Box Tops. Zac suggests that Marty do some breathing before he goes on stage to help him find “the pocket.” Michael loves an aggressive groove. Rob gives his wife credit for helping him become the artist he is today. He plans to play piano for part of his performance. Michael suggests that he sing in a higher register.

Rob Cole – Wondering Why by The Red Clay Strays

Rob is the real deal as he delivers heartfelt sincerity singing this bluesy tune. His raspy voice is not only powerful, but he’s not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve. He also makes it all look easy. When he hits the chorus and grabs the mic, he does not hold back.

Marty O’Reilly – The Letter by Joe Cocker

Marty’s gravelly tone is arresting. Nobody sounds like him on the show. But no way Michael will choose him over Rob, whose open hearted performance ruled the day. The mic drop twist instead of steals and saves. It’s a pretty stupid format change. So far, many talented singers are leaving the competition.

Snoop believes Marty’s “howling and growling” could win The Voice. But he calls Rob a “superstar.” Niall feels Rob should be playing piano more and calls Marty “captivating.” He won’t pick. Reba believes Marty channeled Joe Cocker. Michael regrets putting the two singers together. Rob wins the Knockout, Marty is eliminated. The correct decision. Michael believes Rob could be the winner of The Voice.

Trinity, Jack Austin – Team Bublé

In this montaged clip, only Trinity is featured. She wins the Knockout with a creative take on the popular Whitney Houston hit. Trinity wins the Knockout, Jack is eliminated.

Trinity – I’m Your Baby Tonight by Whitney Houston

After the performance, Michael compares Trinity to 80’s singer Sade, explaining that she can sing both pop and R&B.

DEK of Hearts, Kayleigh Clark – Team Niall (DEK of Heart nabs Niall’s Mic Drop)

Kayleigh grew up on a chicken farm but now lives in Nashville where she pursues a country music career. Niall felt she nailed the song in rehearsal, but needed to watch her pitch and dynamics on the big stage. Joe advises her not to be afraid of the high note at the end. The trio, DEK had only been together for 15 months at the time of the Knockouts filming. Joe compares their harmonies to The Eagles.

DEK of Hearts – What if I Never Get Over You by Lady A

Only together as a vocal group for a short time, DEK deliver incredible vocals as if they have been together forever. All three possess lovely solo voices as well. This season has got a ton of talent. Too bad the aborted format is kinda ruining the season.

Kayleigh Clark – Blue by LeAnn Rimes

Kayleigh delivers a solid rendition of this LeAnn Rimes classic. She nails both the high notes and the yodels. However, she won’t be able to overcome the stiff competition DEK of Hearts just delivered.

Reba says, “LeAnn will be so proud” and added that her yodels were perfect. “Y’all aren’t even kin!” she marveled over DEK’s tight, perfect harmonies. She would pick DEK. Snoop calls the trio “magic” and compliments Kayleigh on her yodeling skills. Niall reminds everybody that both acts were 4-chair turns. And one is about to go home! DEK of Hearts wins the Knockout, Kayleigh Clark is eliminated. Niall also chooses them as his Mic Drop. Niall calls DEK solid and consistent.
