The Voice 28 Recap: Knockouts 5 Live Blog with Videos

The Voice season 28 Knockouts END tonight on night 5 in an episode airing on Monday November 24. Each of the coaches–Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg will partner with two new mega-mentors–Zac Brown (Snoop Dogg, Michael Bublé) and Joe Walsh (Niall Horan, Reba McEntire) to help out with performances. Plus a Mic Drop Button twist will allow each coach to select an artist to compete for America’s vote and a chance to perform at the Rose Bowl. The competition gets fierce–no more steals are saves in this round.

One more Mic Drop and it belongs to Snoop.

Austin Gilbert, Peyton Kyle – Team Reba

Reba stole Austin, a country singer, from Michael Bublé. Peyton, an R&B and pop vocalist, was a one-chair turn. Austin picked his song because he loves to ride bulls. Reba and Joe felt Austin’s rehearsal was perfect, but they had trouble hearing his low notes, so they decide to take up the song a half step. Also very few notes for Peyton. Reba suggested he use his falsetto more.

Peyton Kyle – I Don’t Wanna Be by Gavin DeGraw

This song was popular back in the aughts, but does anyone think about it anymore? Regardless, it’s a good pick for the rock singer. His tone stands out in a unique way, and his phrasing is effortless. He’s also a great stage performer.

Austin Gilbert – Eight Second Ride by Jake Owen

Austin is also a solid stage performer. He knows how to get a crowd going. He’s a capable singer, but his tone and approach are more conventional than Peyton’s. His sound is generic and does not stand out the way Peyton’s creative tone and phrasing do.

“You guys both showed up, you left nothing,” says Michael. He can’t choose. Snoop thought Austin’s song choice was perfect. Snoop would choose both singers. Niall feels Peyton can sing anything. He would lean towards him. Reba picks Peyton, Austin is eliminated. Reba seemed to feel bad about sending Austin home. She made the correct choice, however.

Dustin Dale Gaspard, Kirbi – Team Niall

Dustin “wasn’t feeling very well” Niall revealed, so he did not make it to rehearsal. However, he and Joe still worked with Kirbi. Niall loves when girls take on guy songs. Niall and Joe advise Kirbi to work carefully with dynamics. Later, Niall coached Dustin via Facetime. Dustin does make it to final rehearsal. Both artists were 4-chair turns.

Dustin Dale Gaspard – She Talks to Angels by the Black Crowes

Dustin accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and harmonica. His super raspy voice is perfect for the bluesy rock classic. The little bit of harmonica he plays is a nice touch. I appreciate when the coaches allow artists who play instruments to play. YES I KNOW IT’S CALLED THE VOICE.

Kirbi – Hard Fought Hallelujah by Brandon Lake, Jelly Roll

Kirbi’s tone is incredible. It’s so sweet and clear as she beautifully phrases her song pick. She makes the song her own as her voice soars on the chorus. She’s a powerful vocalist. While Dustin is very good, Kirbi is the clear winner of this Knockout.

Reba calls Kirbi fantastic and loves Dustin’s song choice, and calls his singing stupendous. But she would go with Kirbi. Michael believes Kirbi understands who she is and where she wants to go. But he really loves Dustin’s vibe and would go with him. Snoop wanted more harmonica from Dustin. “Blue grass, green grass, it’s all the same,” he quips. Snoop feels Kirbi picked the perfect song. Niall calls Dustin “an artist to your core,” and believes Kirbi gave her best performance to date. Based on what happened in the room, Niall picks Kirbi, Dustin is eliminated.

YOSHIHANAA, Lauren Anderson – Team Snoop

Snoop and Zac explain how the Mic Drop works to both singers, because when all is said and done, one of them will receive Snoop’s nod. Zac advises Lauren to watch her pitch, and indeed she’s had a couple of pitchy moments during rehearsal. He and Snoop notice that YOSHI doesn’t even hit 10 in rehearsal. Zac gives her a few tips on how to handle the mic.

YOSHIHANAA – You’re All I Need to Get By by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (Snoop’s Mic Drop)

This song is known as a duet, but YOSHI has enough talent for two. She’s a powerhouse vocalist, but never seems like she’s trying as she tosses off adlibs and rangy high notes like it’s no big deal. She manages to take this Motown classic and make it her own.

Lauren Anderson – Try by Pink

Lauren delivers a solid performance of Pink’s song. She delivers her big rock growls impressively, but she’s no match for YOSHI who brought her classic song pick to a whole ‘nother level.

Niall is impressed by YOSHI’s control and vocal range. He appreciates Lauren’s impressive stage presence. He calls her spectacular. Reba was “entertained” by Lauren’s performance. She loved the way she worked her shawl! Reba focused on YOSHI’s thigh high boots. Both women are so talented, she says. Michael wonders if Snoop can make the correct decision. Actually, he can! Snoop picks YOSHIHANAA and then hits his Mic Drop button for her. Snoop jokes that he gave YOSHI the Mic Drop because she did everything BUT drop the Mic.

Each coach goes into the Playoffs with 4 artists. The show ends with a recap of the 4 Mic Drops. Fans can vote for the Mic Drop NOW at NBC.com and The Voice official phone app through Friday November 8 at 7 pm ET.
