American Idol Winner Caleb Johnson’s Debut Produced by Howard Benson

Howard Benson reveals, via twitter, that he is producing the self-titled debut album from American Idol winner, Caleb Johnson.

Benson has produced for several Idol alums, including Daughtry’s first 3 albums–Daughtry, Leave This Town and Break the Spell. He has also produced songs for Kelly Clarkson (Cry, I Do Not Hook Up), Adam Lambert (Aftermath) and Allison Iraheta (Don’t Waste the Pretty, Still Breathing).

All the songs have been “chosen,” which assumes that Caleb had no time to write for the album, unless UMG feels his pre-Idol originals are worthy of a major label debut.

ETA: Caleb had a songwriting session on June 6.  Considering the time constraints, He’ll be lucky to get one or two co-writes.

In the short window of time Caleb has to record this album, the songs chosen for the record are probably either songs that have been kicking around for awhile, or tracks recorded by artists that didn’t make the final cut to an album.  I’m sure there are demos floating around of many of the songs picked for Caleb’s debut.

Typically, an Idol will co-write with professional songwriters while on tour, but with the album coming out on August, Caleb has to wrap up recording before he embarks on the Idol tour in a couple of weeks.

If Kristy Lee Cook could record an album in 4 days…maybe Caleb will break her record! The album, Caleb Johnson is set to be released on August 12.
