American Idol: Grace Kinstler Closes the Show and Shows That She is a QUEEN

Grace has wowed from the moment we saw her this season. Her performance of Demi Lovato’s “Father” in her showstopper round was so emotional and had me thinking that she may just win it all. She also is #1 on MJ’s current list. I agree with this, but I will say I’m not so sure that she will win. This season has yet to provide a clear frontrunner, which keeps it exciting. There are several, and Grace is one of them.

The 20-year-old powerhouse started out on tonight’s Top 24 Solos and All Star Duets episode with her solo of Jessie J’s female empowerment anthem “Queen”. It was not my favorite song choice if I am being honest. It showed off a sultry side of Grace. However, it just seemed like a bit much as the song is full of vocal frills and runs. It showed Grace’s skill, but it was more substance than style. This was possibly my least favorite Grace performance and still it was top 10 quality. Grace is that good. I will say her stage presence was not lacking and she worked the stage and was super fun to watch.

This led into to her duet with Joss Stone, singing her audition song “Midnight Train to Georgia” by Gladys Knight & The Pips. Joss gave her advice to sometimes start by singing the notes straight and then add in some runs instead of just singing run after run. I agree with this. Joss at one point said “She is so talented. She can do everything with her voice.” Joss is obviously incredible, so I was excited to see if Grace could compete with her and of course she could. One thing tonight made clear is that Grace has already grown so much this season. The belts were more controlled than her audition. Every note was so clear and controlled. The grit of Joss mixed with Grace’s clear as a bell belts was a nice contrast.

Judge Lionel Richie stated that Grace has a “winning package” and he “loves the way she navigates around the stage.” Katy Perry said that she was “soaring” and to think about those “timeless, classic songs” if she gets to perform again. I actually could do without overdone, classic songs and would love to see Grace show versatility with more takes on current songs. Luke Bryan said he could not believe that he had a front row seat.

I expect Grace to be at least Top 5 this season unless something shocking happens.
