American Idol Top 12 – What Will The Idols Sing?

The American Idol 9 Top 12 hit the big stage Tuesday night, singing the songs of The Rolling Stones.  The kids very first theme night has them choosing from 50 songs from the Stones catalog.  Check out the songs after the jump.

Watch Cooper, Osnes & Munoz Sing Irving Berlin!

Siobhan Magnus already spilled the beans to Access Hollywood on her song choice. She’ll be singing “Paint it Black”.  (I’m intrigued!).

  • Download songs from the Rolling Stones playlist HERE.

What I think they should sing:

  • Aaron Kelly – “Salt of the Earth”, “Waiting on a Friend” – Aaron seems too immature to sing any of these tunes. He could put a country spin on these two.
  • Andrew Garcia – “Time is On My Side” – This song might survive “the treatment”
  • Casey James – “Honky Tonk Woman” or “It’s All Over Now” – With electric guitar or
  • Crystal Bowersox – “Gimme Shelter” – I’d love to hear her wail on this
  • Didi Benami – “She’s a Rainbow” – Spare arrangement with guitar.
  • Lacey Brown – “As Tears Go By”
  • Katie Stevens – “Wild Horses” – Because you know somebody is going to do it.
  • Lee Dewyze – “Jumpin Jack Flash”, “Street Fighting Man”  (Or something else uptempo, Lee should use this opportunity to rock out)
  • Michael Lynche – “Angie” or “Tumbling Dice”
  • Paige Miles – “Beast of Burden”
  • Tim Urban – “Ruby Tuesday” – Kind of a random pick, he might do OK with something ballady.

  1. Here’s what I’d like to hear:

Siobhan – already said “Paint it Black” – there’s a cool woman covering this song on YouTube with an interesting arrangement – I bet it’s the one Siobhan chooses

    Mike – “Beast of Burden”
    Lee – “Honky Tonk Women”
    Tim – “She’s a Rainbow”
Casey – “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”
    Andrew – “Angie”
    Aaron – “Heart of Stone”
Katie – “Time is on my Side”
Crystal – “Happy” or “Get off of my Cloud” or “Shine a Light”
    Lacey – “Ruby Tuesday”
Didi – “As Tears Go By”
Paige – “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” – similar to Aretha’s version that is killer

  2. Lacy could pull “streets of Love” and make it sound like her song.

  3. Just the thought of Bowersox singing “Gimme Shelter” gave me goosebumps, but I wonder if tptb will allow those lyrics on idol? ‘Rape, murder, it’s just a shot away’. If it flies it would be revelatory.

  4. Interesting that Siobhan is doing Paint it Black – one of my fav RS songs, and sung by one of my fav (remaining) contestants. Should be good. She tends to do more intense, semi-depressing songs, doesn’t she? I can see Simon telling her to lighten up one of these days. lol.

I want Tim to do Satisfaction, just because I think that could be Anoop “Beat It” level karaoke bad. :-) But that’s just me.

I think Casey will sing “Midnight Rambler”

I can totally hear Casey doing this one.

  6. Spare arrangement with guitar.

Whatever they sing, I’m pleading with the AI Gods to spare us any more “spare arrangements” from any of them!

I have not been a fan of Paige, but I do agree that she might do well with “Beast of Burden.”

    Ditto!

By my count last week, 3 of the 8 girls performed with guitar, and 5 of the 8 guys did. If that trend continues, and especially since they’re on the bigger stage, which is less intimate than the small semi-final stage, I hope Simon calls them out on it and makes them get rid of the guitars in the subsequent weeks.

  8. My main concern is that Crystal and Casey take this opportunity to really rock out this week! ITA a million times over that Crystal would slay on “Gimme Shelter”. I need to youtube some of the list to refresh my memory for Casey, but I want that electric guitar front and center.

  9. i think the audience should rise up during Tim Urban’s performance and sing “You cant always get what you want” in honor of Alex. as long as Crystal survives this week, i dont care what they sing….

  10. I like Siobhan, but I hope that she doesn’t do that weird thing she did with Chris Isaak’s song. It was as if she were impersonating a man singing a man’s song. It tripped me out. I want to hear HER sing it as a woman/girl/whatever. I want to hear Siobhan sing it as Siobhan…not Mick Jagger!!!

  11. Since Siobhan already spilled the beans on what she is going to sing on Tuesday (check out the version of Paint It, Black by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on YouTube; this is the closest singer to Siobhan that I have found that has done a version of this song), this takes away one song about which to speculate. My picks for the remaining contestants:

    1. Casey James: With all due respect, Casey should stay away from Honky Tonk Women, as that song would be a huge cliche for him to sing. I like the idea of Casey singing Tumbling Dice, as that has a similar juke joint vibe and opportunities for him to play his electric guitar.

    2. Lee DeWyze: Lee could choose any number of songs from the Stones catalog. Someone on VFTW mentioned the Stereophonics’ version of Angie, which would be a great fit for his voice. I also could see Lee choosing It’s Only Rock n’ Roll, Yoy Can’t Always Get What You Want or Street Fighting Man.

    3. Michael Lynche: Not to put Big Mike in a box, but he really should do Fool to Cry, which is as close to an all-out soul jam that the Stones have ever written. It will fit him like a glove.

    4. Andrew Garcia: I have a sneaking feeling that Andrew may pleasantly surprise us this week. He would actually do well with either of two songs off of the Some Girls album, Miss You and Beast of Burden. He just needs to remember how to find the soulful spot in his voice.

    5. Aaron Kelly: I had once suggested No Expectations (no pun intended) for Aaron, but I think that I agree with MJs suggestion for a country version of Salt of the Earth. Honestly, can you see this kid singing Dead Flowers? Me neither.

    6. Tim Urban: Don’t hate me, but Tim may actually do well this week, as Mick’s voice doesn’t have a large range to it either. He needs to pick something simple and sweet, kind of like Angie, She’s Like a Rainbow, or Ruby Tuesday.

    7. Crystal Bowersox: I know that I’m not the only one to have mentioned this, but Crystal should do something akin to the Patti Smith version of Gimme Shelter. This would be another moment for her.

    8. Didi Benami: Maybe I’m crazy, but I think that Didi can have a trademarked “Idol moment” with Shine a Light, which totally fits her vibe.

    9. Lacey Brown: MJ is right; someone is bound to sing Wild Horses tomorrow. I’d rather it be Lacey than Katie, particularly if she does the Sundays’ version (and NOT the God-awful Susan Boyle version).

    10. Katie Stevens: Honestly, there just isn’t much for Katie to pick from here. I would suggest Marianne Faithfull’s version of As Tears Go By, but I don’t know if she has the world-weariness in her voice to pull it off (it may come off more as Nancy Sinatra’s version- and that’s NOT a good thing).

    11. Paige Miles: Props to linda2u for suggesting Jumpin’ Jack Flash for Paige, but I had Thelma Houston’s version in mind instead of Aretha’s. That fits her voice much better.

  12. I don’t care what any one of them sing, but Alex should be there instead of Tim or Aaron and Lilly should be there over Paige or Lacey IMHO, but any who I am rooting for Crystal and Andrew, those are my picks for this year’s show….

No matter what Aaron sings it’s not going to be pretty.

I think as the rest of you do Crystal would do gimme shelter well….

I think Andrew would be good at doing beast of burden or Angie as well….

The rest can sing what they want the only other two I care for are Casey and Siobhan and sometimes I like Didi and Michael….

  13. I think casey could carry the beautiful Moonlite mile or even the more world weary Memory Motel(hotel?)

    Soibhan announced Painted Black.
    Crystle is doing Gimme Shelter.

  14. I don’t think any of them will pic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, it might be taboo to pick something with that lyric.

Is that for sure about Crystal? Where did you hear that?
