  1. Well I think this will allow Crystal to get out of her guitar, folk/rock box. From what she said and the theme, this could be great for her. I look forward to it.

The rest? I’m skeered. Very very skeered.

  2. I have just two words: Crystal. Umbrella. Seriously, it’s a nobrainer

  3. I really really really want Lee to do a Beyonce song. I don’t know why.

  4. I know no one is going to try to do “Ain’t No Sunshine” or “Tracks of My Tears” right??

  5. This will be a very interesting theme. Much better than this week’s, IMO.

It’ll give Crystal and Siobhan just the challenge they need. I think Aaron and Casey will struggle to find their ground, which means that I kinda think they’ll do awesome (I have a feeling that a lot of these contestants will rise up to the challenge… But who knows, that could be good or bad.) Andrew and Katie will regain lost steam (Andrew, in particular. I always thought his voice was quite R&B-ish). Didi and Lee will do something interesting. Michael will be playing to his strengths, but I bet he’ll be nothing new. Tim…. Well, will most likely suck.

R&B is broad. Do they mean modern or classic? I’m an R&B fan, but my tastes mostly hit the 90s and early 2000s.

Hold on, in light of that list I’m changing what songs I want to see from these people.

  6. Tee-hee, I just had a thought of Tim and his abs doing the D’Angelo song (like in the video)…I know he said he wouldn’t take his shirt off, but admit it, it’d be funny.

    And these?
Ain’t No Sunshine – Bill Withers
The Tracks of My Tears – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
September – Earth Wind and Fire
Stand By Me – Ben E. King
Have either been overdone, or done TOO well by others and shouldn’t even be touched.

And why are there songs there that have already even been done EARLIER IN THE SEASON?

  7. Gahh. How the hell are they supposed to sound current when they’re given a list of old stuff that has been rehashed over and over and over again. Poor confused contestants.

  8. * A House is Not a Home – Luther Vandross
    * Crazy in Love – Beyonce
    * What I’d Say, Pts 1 and 2 – Ray Charles
    * Umbrella (feat. Jay-Z) – Rihanna
    * I Want You Back – Jackson 5
    * September – Earth Wind and Fire
    * When a Man Loves a Woman – Percy Sledge
    * Fallin’ – Alicia Keys
    * End of the Rod

These are the songs I see some people performing

Crazy in Love – Call me absolutely f*cking insane if you want to, but I say either Casey or Lee should do this song. Funk it up. Hell, have ANY guy do this song.
Fallin’ – That could go to Crystal. But no, it’ll go to Katie instead. Either way, I dunno if this song should go to either.
Umbrella – Hmm…. Either Crystal or Siobhan. But Umbrella is a fairly rock-influenced song, it seems.
What I’d Say – Hey, I think this song is perfect for Casey. I think it’ll be hilariously uncomfortable if Tim does this song. Hell, I think Crystal could do this song too.
I Want You Back – I think it’s Aaron’s chance to young it up, but I kinda fear for that. I have a strange feeling he’ll do well with it.
End of the Road – I can see Andrew doing this then leaving.

  9. MJ, I’m on my iTunes right now. There’s two lists, one with 125 songs, and the second (which you have) which only shows about 25. I hope they’re picking from the first list and not the second.

Hoping Crystal sings “Rainy Night in Georgia,” and Didi sings “Natural Woman.”

Big Mike should bring out the Luther.

Aaron, I see singing some Boys II Men. Although, I think he’d do well with the Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions hit “People Get Ready.”

And hoping Tim sings “Land of the 1000 Dances.”

  10. Crystal could have a “moment” is she picks Umbrella. And if Paige was here still, I would bet all my money on her singing Beyonce

  11. Didi sings “Natural Woman.”

I know I don’t like the “somebody did it, it’s untouchable” mentality, but when someone does it in the same season (Crystal) and does absolutely amazing, I think the song should be reserved for the next season.

Also, do they really only get this many songs to sing?

Another point, Katie gets Respect or Fallin’.

  12. I think that is the wrong list? I thought the list was the icon that says… R&B Top Songs in the category but maybe I’m wrong?

    My choices for Casey are…

    Easy – Comodores
Bring It On Home To Me – Sam Cooke
In The Midnight Hour – Wilson Pickett
I’ve Been Loving You To Long – Otis Redding
Tired of Being Alone – Al Green
Midnight Train To Georgia – Gladys Night

Casey has a lot of soul and blues in his voice. He will do great with this theme as long as he doesn’t choose Mustang Sally!

  13. MJ, I’m on my iTunes right now. There’s two lists, one with 125 songs, and the second (which you have) which only shows about 25. I hope they’re picking from the first list and not the second.

So do I because 25 songs isn’t nearly enough for 10 people. Plus, some of those songs should be avoided at all cost.

  14. Ahhhh Lee needs to do “Doo Wop (That Thing)” For realz.

I really want someone to do “No Diggity.” I really don’t care who.

  15. Do Wop (That Thing) – Lauryn Hill

    Wha-wha-wha-WHAAAAAAT?!

Wow, Crystal should totally do this song complete with the rap. Crystal rapping. LMAO. It’s kinda sad, but I can picture this being her surprise for next week and her actually making a really good killing. She would totally kill that chorus in a good way >_>.

I’m Every Woman – Chaka Khan

Tim Urban could totally destroy Lil Rounds with this song >_> (Not really).

I’m a fan of R&B (mostly 90s), but this list does not seem very current at all. Gawd.

Whoa, the list keeps changing o_O.

  16. I think Didi should do Sara Bareilles’s live version of “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay.” She could totally kill it, but Sara slows it down and does it with just a piano. And Didi might want to change things up a bit since she’s tried to vamp it up and slow it down the past few weeks.

Crystal could definitely rock an acoustic “Umbrella” or even “Waterfalls” (which is on the 125 song list).

I’ll have to look more for Lee and Casey. Nothing really jumped out at me for them. And shoot me now, but Andrew could actually have a decent week this week if he picks the right song.

I hope the list is longer than that 25 song one. There were some songs that could have some potential on the longer 125 list. I hope they have more than just 25ish to choose from.

  17. I’ll be shocked it Siobhan doesn’t sing Respect.
ETA: Not that it would be a good thing. That’s just what I expect her to do.

  18. siobhan better not do the kelly clarkson version of natural woman with that insanely high note…i could see her doin chain of fools though.

  19. I think Crystal could put her own spin on “No One.”

I would like Timmy to do “My Perrogative.” White bread style, of course. LOL.

  20. Please, please, please. No Supremes or Temptations.

And you just know that Katie will pick a Whitney (How will I know) or Mariah (vision of love) song. Followed by the judges ripping her to pieces for doing so.

Oh, and Adrew will do MJs Rock With You.

  21. I’ll be shocked it Siobhan doesn’t sing Respect.
ETA: Not that it would be a good thing. That’s just what I expect her to do.

I’d be shocked if she did. I think she made the right move doing the screeching and will tone it down. She explained her reasoning, and Simon looked impressed to me. One thing you need is to be memorable, and everyone has been talking about her. If she tones it down, she will be a force to be reckoned with. I don’t see her picking Respect, but who knows?

  22. OHHHH, Didi NEEDS to do an Waterfalls.

Katie and Aaron need to duet on The Boy is Mine!

  23. I can just now picture Siobhan screaming Diana Ross. And I’ve wanted someone to do “Mad” for AGES on the show so I really hope that Andrew pulls out the guitar and does it all acousticly and jazzy and not too funky a la his sunday morining audition.

The rest of them are stumping me… who cares, it will either sound really good (Crystal), OK and slightly forgettable (Lee, Aaron, Didi, Mike, Casey) or pitchy and wrong (Katie, Tim)

  24. contestants, no temptations, supremes, smokey robinson or anything like that. Think 90s r&b, because that is where it is at.

  25. Casey will be fine this week. He just needs to coast through this theme. Sittin on the Dock of the Bay or Cruisin will do him fine, or he can do upbeat. Just not Superstition with Jessica Simpson hair. ;-)

  26. Looking over the list, it’s mostly old school. Mostly. So they will get scolded for being old fashioned unless they can make it their own. The script is already written.

  27. Andrew could totally redeem himself this week. He does a great version of “I want you back” on YouTube.

Crystal could kill with “doo woo that thing).

Didi could also do really well.

Am I seriously looking forward to next week?

  28. Aww, Paige would have done well with How Will I Know. I think Casey should sing I’ll Make Love to You.

  29. I wouldn’t do Usher, with him being the mentor. Although, it might be nice to hear something more current, some of those oldies are classics. Mike could handle Sam Cooke, Ben E. King or Al Green. Would love to hear Crystal do Otis Redding, Tina Turner, Mary J or Aretha.

Tim needs to do Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative”.

They’ve usually picked out their song by now & started working on it. Maybe Paige will tell which she had planned to do, in one of her post boot interviews.

  30. Nobody better sing my jam “Let’s Stay Together” unless they are going to be brilliant. And please nobody sing “No One,” that’s another song that has been done waaaayyy too many times on this show.

Tim should totally sing some Barry White, that would make me laugh, a lot. Or My Perogative…

I’m thinking all those Boyz II Men songs should be avoided, too.

There’s an awful lot of old songs on the list. I love a whole bunch of them, but I don’t want to hear this crew singing them. I am looking forward to seeing what Crystal comes up with.

  31. The list just got better, IMO. More current.

Siobhan could do Shut Up and Drive based on Rihanna’s version on Letterman, where she made it a more rock-ish number. I think Siobhan could do it well if she’s really being compared to Paramore and Flyleaf (I see those two comparisons, by the way).

Crystal could bust it out with some Alicia Keys.

Aaron better not choose a Boyz II Men song, Back At One, or I Wanna Know. I want something that’s not a ballad. But I certainly wouldn’t mind that country twang on an R&B song. Hmm, but which one would suit him? Chris Brown? I almost wanna say My Boo, but I can only see him kinda doing the chorus. I kinda wanna say Let’s Stay Together, but he’ll need to be current.

To Didi doing Waterfalls – YES. YES.

The rest just kinda stump me or I don’t really care.

For some reason, I’m really looking forward to next week. I really can’t wait to see what Crystal, Siobhan, and Aaron do.

  32. I Heard it Through the Grapevine – Marvin Gaye
    Superstition – Stevie Wonder

Lol, Andrew and Siobhan can just reprise their songs and take the next week off from rehearsing!

Seriously, though, I want to hear songs not sung a million times on this show next week.

I’d actually really like one of the girls to tackle a soulful version of Umbrella – there’s a studio recording I would want.

  33. I kind of like this week, it’s Mowtown + More.

Semi-Serious suggestion for Tim Urban: All Time Low’s cover of Umbrella. It kind of fits into the whole pop/rock teen girl loving too much hair slightly off key thing he has going on.

If you want more evidance of my bad taste in covers, I dare an Idol to attempt Hit The Light’s cover of the classic Whitney Houston song “How Will I Know”

  34. If you want more evidance of my bad taste in covers, I dare an Idol to attempt Hit The Light’s cover of the classic Whitney Houston song “How Will I Know”

Hit The Lights sings a cover of that? I’ve only heard Body Bag (my fav) and Cry Your Eyes Out. *runs to go check it out*

I bet Andrew will sing Rihanna. LOL

  35. This is a disappointing list. So many of these artists have better songs than the ones listed. Babyface wrote and produced some of the best songs ever recorded, let alone R&B songs, and they pick “Every Time I Close My Eyes”?! No “End of the Road” from Boyz II Men? How about Toni Braxton’s “Love Shoulda Brought You Home Last Night” or “Breathe Again” or “Another Sad Love Song” or Anita Baker’s “Giving You the Best that I Got” or “I Apologize.” I could see Lee making “End of the Road” soulful and awesome or Crystal sexing up “Another Sad Love Song” like she did with Tracy Chapman.

I honestly don’t care what individual idols sing next week because I’m ready to be frustrated and annoyed. The bar is so low.

  36. My first thought when I read the list was that Katie is totally going to do Umbrella. AND totally suck the life out of it.

I think Crystal would kill on alot of these songs, but personally I’m hoping for Marvin Gaye’s Mercy Mercy Me. No guitar so everyone that complains about it will shut the hell up. Just sing it girlfriend.

Lots of good choices here. Oldies but some real goodies.

  37. Hit The Lights sings a cover of that?

I could not find a working version on Youtube, otherwise I would have linked. It was a B-side on their skip school, start fights album. For me,(for you, dawg) it falls into the “so bad it’s good” category.

  38. If you want more evidance of my bad taste in covers, I dare an Idol to attempt Hit The Light’s cover of the classic Whitney Houston song “How Will I Know”

I was curious and found it on their myspace page…it’s like New Found Glory’s “From the Screen to Your Stereo” covers without the musical ability.

And I can just imagine the fight that’s going down right now between Andrew and Tim to sing “Umbrella”

  39. Andrew could totally redeem himself this week. He does a great version of “I want you back” on YouTube.

that what i first think for him…he will do a great job

  40. For some reason I think Lee could do a cool version of We Don’t Need Another Hero.

I would love if Katie sang Save the Best For Last, it would drive people crazy

  41. this could be reallg good but they’ll all probably choose songs older than the freakin judges! Ugh its soo frustrating that these idiot contestants continue to choose songs that are ancient and oversang on idol. With that song heres what i think they should sing.

Aaron- Chris Brown “Say Goodbye” the perfect song to add some country twang to.

Andrew- Anita Baker “Sweet Love” an acoustic version of this song would be really good.

Casey- Toni Braxton “Unbreak My Heart” a rock/blues male version of this would be great.

Crystal- The Fugees “Killing me Softly” OMG she would rock that!

Didi- TLC “Waterfalls” a slowed acoustic version from Didi would be interesting.

Katie- Brandy “Have you Ever” This week could really put Katie in the front again with the perfect choice.

Lee- Beyonce “Crazy in Love” Switchfoot i believe did a cover he would really well with.

Mike- Mariah Carey “We belong together” He loves doing his falsetto and he could make a moment with this BIG song.

Shiobhan- Rihanna “Unfaithful” It’s such a dramatic and big song Shiobhan could sing circles around Rihanna and become the frontrunner.

Tim- Justin Timberlake “What goes around comes around” His core audience will love it and if he can stay in tune it could be great.

  42. Now with that said I’m sure they’ll all choose pathetic mediocre songs from 1965 that have been song a million times on idol and song a million times better!

  43. No one better sing Al Greene’s “Let’s Stay Together”. It’s almost a cliche at this point. No Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, please! They did make this list very selective. A lot of the better songs some of these artists sang aren’t there. Also, NO SAM COOKE! No Tina Turner! If anyone is going to do Alicia Keys, they have to be careful. Her songs are extremely hard to sing and uniquely her own.

I love Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart”. I wish one of the girls would do that. But what I would really like is if someone has the guts to do the great Ray Charles’ “Unchain My Heart”. Listen to that song, it’s unbelievable. A great rendition of a brilliant classic like that could bring down the house. Either a guy or a girl. It’s a huge risk, but if anyone can pull it off, it could be brilliant. This theme seems tailored for Mike, but it’s also a minefield. IF anyone is going to do Michael Jackson, then it better be darn good. Adam Lambert did “Black or White” and just owned it, but that was him.

I don’t even have the strength to think about what Tim will do. But I am sure he will have “fun” with it.

Those are truly weird song choices. What else is totally weird is that I can totally see this being an awesome show if they did all these. I love me some weird song choices turned into amazing performances (ABMB by David Cook? She Works Hard For The Money by Kris Allen? Yes please.)

I dunno if these contestants have the potential to take these song choices and do them well, but the weirder the song choice, the giddier I get.

Casey or Lee doing Crazy In Love would be bloody awesome. I don’t care if either of them end up sucking with it, I will vote for them for choosing a song I thought would be good.

  45. I Want You Back – Jackson 5
Never Can Say Goodbye – Jackson 5
    Who’s Lovin’ You – Jackson 5

    perfect songs for Andrews REDEMPTION

  46. Really? Where are all the current songs? Even those in mega album Confessions are not included in the list.

  47. This is a stinky list. Most of the good songs on it have been done to death on AI and should never, I mean NEVER, be done again on this show. And that’s with me only having watched this show since Season 7. If anyone does Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey, I will be sick right in my living room. Crystal, who is smart, will do fine. Siobhan, who is eccentric, should do just fine and be high entertainment no matter what she does. Andrew, if he relaxes now that he’s made the tour, should be just fine. (I could make some money betting on this. He’s going to blossom now.) Casey and Michael run the risk of being solid, but boring. (Oh, Casey, Don’t do “Easy.”) Didi is anybody’s guess. Lee may pick a good song with a decent arrangement, but will he sing it in tune? Stay tuned. If the last few weeks is any indication, Katie and Aaron will both bore and annoy the audience with drab and out-of-tune performances. Tim is always good for the no-he-didn’t factor. I expect him to do “Easy”, if Casey doesn’t nab it, with a calypso beat, while attempting choreography inspired by the music video of “Thriller.”

  48. Really? Where are all the current songs? Even those in mega album Confessions are not included in the list.

The idea is to make old songs sound current.
Cook did it beautifully, we’ll have to see who rises to the challenge this year.

  49. Interesting list here.
I think I would like to see Lee sing Un-break my heart just to see what he can do with it. hmm

    Idolwood.blogspot.com

  50. Andrew, if he relaxes now that he’s made the tour, should be just fine. (I could make some money betting on this. He’s going to blossom now.)

Good comments, he will do that im sure..

  51. I really want someone to do TLC’s “Waterfalls.” Anyone who does that pulls it off automatically is going to be a frontrunner I’m telling you. Crystal if you wanna branch out and gain more fans and stop doing the same thing over and over, this is what you need to do, sign “Waterfalls.”

  52. nate,

Thanks for that great link to Eva Cassidy performing her version of the old classic Impressions’ “People Get Ready”. It’s one of my all time favorite songs, but I couldn’t figure out how to change it up. This is absolutely a beautiful performance. It gave me chills. I actually think either Crystal or Siobhan would bring down the house with a performance like that. For Siobhan, it would be a complete and total change with what she has been doing. No more high notes, please!

  53. Lord – talk about a walk down memory lane! I was lucky enough to grow up when R&B was king. I saw ’em all in concert – Marvin Gaye (the Sexual Healing tour), The Temptations, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Commodores, Al Green, the inimitable Chaka Khan (‘Brick House’ was written about her for a reason), Earth, Wind and Fire (one of the best concerts ever). Great time to be a teenager – best music in the world. So there’s a ton of good in that list – if they know what to do with it. Do we get David Cook and Adam Lambert – or more of the same boring karaoke?

  54. Totally bummed that they didn’t have this theme when Elliott was on in season 5… sigh.

I predict Big Mike does “Let’s Stay Together” and I think he’ll be awesome. I’ve got an eerie feeling that Katie might sing Natual Woman. If so, I may shoot myself.

  55. Trainwreck of the clueless: If Katie Stevens picked Whitney’s “Saving All My Love For You” (she’s too young to realize it’s about an extramarital affair).

    What I’d enjoy:
Big Mike on Aaron Neville’s “Tell It Like It Is” (such a swoon worthy song)
Lee on the John Lennon version of Smokey’s “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me”
Casey on a bluesy “Rainy Night in Georgia”.
Siobhan on the Linda Ronstadt version of Martha Reeves’ “Heat Wave”
Andrew on back to basics acoustic “Mercy Mercy Me” or “People Get Ready”
Crystal on Otis’ “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” – but she says she’s going to surprise us..
Didi – Mary Wells’ “My Guy”

can’t think of anything special for Tim or Aaron.

  56. Songs from the past 10 years are from Aaliyah, Usher, Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Ne-yo and Rihanna.

Note to Katie, that’s where you belong, as dictated by the judges. And she’ll most likely go with “No One”. Snore.

Big Mike must be relishing the opportunity to choose from a truckload of cheesy songs. Who can already picture him doing “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch” or doing the cheesy hand movements during “Back At One”?

Didi has to pick “Crusin'” It’s a song that she has room to work on. Consult Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis’s cover.

  57. Everyone here seems great at picking out songs…I hope some of those idols are lurking. Does anyone else here love the song Mustang Sally? Didn’t Sundance sing that and then get cut? I loved when he sang that.

  58. Well Andrew can feel comfortable, cause he can do Heard it thru the Grapevine, cause hes already practiced it,!

  59. I hope Aaron doesnt pick a cheesy love song, I hope he can pick an upbeat song and not cheese it out.

  60. Finally, a real theme!!!! Sorry for those who think these are “old songs” — these are some of the best songs ever. Maybe I’m biased b/c I grew up hearing these on the radio and seeing them performed by the original artists on TV shows such as Ed Sullvan, but just reading the list gave me chills.
A wild guess — Crystal already sang “Natural Woman” in Hollywood week, with the guitar. I bet this time she does it on piano, which is how Aretha did it (and Carole King, who wrote it).
Andrew could definitely redeem himself, get back on the guitar and tear up some Temptations or Jackson Five.
Gosh, I want Casey to get down and dirty on something like “Mustang Sally” or “Soul Man” or some Otis Redding. Casey’s reminds me of Gregg Allman’s voice sometimes, and I want to see more BLUES.
The others I haven’t thought of anything for yet. Just SO EXCITED about this theme.

  61. Sorry for those who think these are “old songs” — these are some of the best songs ever.

I totally agree that they are some of the best songs ever – I’m a huge Motown fan. I just hope these kids can do it justice and not be too karaoke with it (or slaughter these great songs). Bring it, kids.

  62. The only way I could deal with this is if all 10 of them picked the 10 *least*-often-sung songs on this list.

Yeah, I *like* a lot of songs on this list. But for heaven’s sake, who hasn’t heard most of them at least a million times? Very very very very few people manage to do good covers of songs that are extremely well known, partly because it’s extremely difficult to do a new version that’s strong enough and catchy enough to drive the memory of the incredibly-well-known-and-overdone standard out of listeners’ minds in one [under-two-minute] go.To expect a bunch of terrified rank amateurs to do this is insanity. Good covers tend to come from taking a much-lesser-known older song and doing it in your own, contemporary style.

Thus — crap. Next week, the usual suspects will do okay and the rest will just be a mess. They’re setting them up for that, whether they know it or not. Even though I love R&B, I’m not looking forward to this. …. Maybe Usher can give them some useful tips on selling contemporary soul. Hope he at least tries and doesn’t just act bored because he’s come on the show merely to sell something.

  63. Since I am pretty sure I won’t be buying any of the contestant’s versions of these songs, I went over and bought some of the originals — thanks MJ for posting this. And yes, AI, your evil marketing ploy worked. Did you know the contestants were going to be so dull this year beforehand?

I fluv that Aaron Neville song…

  64. Lee Dewyze could do a wicked rendtion of Mustang Sally.

I was wondering if this would be good too. I love that song and maybe he would finally really let loose.

  65. There’s so many crazy covers of Umbrella that I will be shocked if nobody does that one.

Wow, this list is cool. I think there’s some real potential there if they don’t pick all the overdone ones.

  66. Tim is so doing Forever or With You. LOL

Crystal is going to kill next week. So many of these songs are gospel tinged. She should be fine if she doesn’t pick something too obvious. I want to hear her do “People Get Ready”. nah, too obvious. What about “Who’s Loving You”? That would be awesome. Or some Mary J Blige! Now that could work.

  67. I bet Crystal picks Chain of Fools by Aretha. I can’t wait to see what Crystal pulls out of her sleeve next week!

  68. i was hoping crytal would save “people get ready” for the idol gives back, but there is still “fields of gold”, the eva cassidy version so…

  69. I wonder what Crystal’s surprise is? Does she play the piano? Maybe she’ll pull a Katelyn on Umbrella? Or will she be dancing and sliding around the stage to the tune of Aretha? Heh I’m excited! I also want Casey to pull some Usher sans guitar as well! Exciting week ahead Hopefully

  70. some of these songs are really great. i hope idols don’t sing songs that are way overdone on the show.

  71. i actually think this is a fantastic list… could i actually be excited? looking forward to seeing what the kids pick.

  72. The idea is to make old songs sound current.

i’m more interested in hearing them sing current songs, and making themselves sound and look current, lol. none thus far, except for a scant few, have proven they can even really sing, so i’m ready to see something different, the flipping of a played out script.

  73. This list is pretty awesome. Unfortunately, most of the Idols are not and as old school soul/R&B is some of my favorite music, I can see the train wrecks already, haha. I’m so excited to see what Crystal is going to do! :D

  74. if anyone does ”who’s lovin’ you” by michael jackson and the j5, and screws it up i’m hunting them down, lol… that’s one none of this current crop has shown the range, the emotion, the organic soul to even think about singing, but with this bunch, you never know who may think they can take it on… he was what, 10 or 11 when he recorded this… amazing. still missing him…

    Who’s Lovin You – Jackson 5
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udtqvO92Azo

  75. Just had a thought. This group, for the most part, has seemed tentative and the judges have given them a hard time, so they’ve been acting like puppies who messed on the carpet and know it. I hope to goodness they take a deep breath, breathe a deep sigh of relief that they’ve MADE THE TOUR, and now relax and BRING IT, dang it! They’ve proven they can sing (well, most of them) so now they need to get with it. I am optimistically looking forward to a much better show next week! Hope the ones who’ve been scolded get mad and show some passion out on that stage!

  76. too bad this wasn’t a theme last year! Anoop would have had the opportunity to sing Boys II Men “I’ll make love to you!” Would have helped his chances of advancing tremendously.

  77. I can see katie stevens doing rihanna. shut up and drive or umbrella. Andrew Garcia needs to do Usher. I think that will suit his voice the best and he can hopefully bust out some of his dance moves.

  78. Hopefully next week will be better than this week. For one, usually the more R&B, soul, motown, standards themes do yield better song choices, because the source material is generally so much stronger. And at least this time they have a more specific genre of songs to choose from, which might keep some of them more focused.

I looked at the itunes list this morning, and the material looks promising, though a little scatter shot, since it’s covering old R&B plus current songs.

This is exactly in Mike’s wheelehouse, which adds some pressure to him. Looking forward to what Crystal and Siobhan do with it (Siobhan would be wise to take a page out of the Adam Lambert playbook and do a completely stripped down take on a classic – just don’t touch TOMT! ;-) ) Didi could do surprisingly well too, just because of her unique tone and how it could add flavor to a well known, covered-to-death song.

Katie’s style is actually very old fashioned/jazz to begin with, so this could work well for her, but I predict she will come across too old fashioned with her interpretation.

I bet Crystal picks Chain of Fools by Aretha. I can’t wait to see what Crystal pulls out of her sleeve next week!

Aretha would be a very predictable song choice for Crystal – I really hope, since this has been my #1 critique of her in the first place, that she chooses something surprising. After all, she promised as much ;-)

  80. Katie’s style is actually very old fashioned/jazz to begin with, so this could work well for her, but I predict she will come across too old fashioned with her interpretation.

I agree. She really has to choose carefully. She is so jazz standards-leaning that she will automatically sound like an Andrews Sister if she’s not careful.

Plus, the girl has no soul whatsoever. A lot of these songs might be out of her emotional range.

I could see her doing well with something like Sleeping With A Broken Heart though.

ETA: Oooh, I just thought of something for Katie… what if she did like a Colbie Callait version of Just My Imagination? Like on a stool with a guitar, made a very wistful pop song out of it. That could fit her.

  81. This week is risky for a few. Aaron(my girl), Mike(everything), and Katie could come off being cheesy and Karaoke with this theme. Katie should just choose the most contemporary song on the list and do what she can with it. Casey has to be careful he doesn’t come off as Huey Lewis again as Huey remade a lot of these songs. There are many songs that Lee would be great at but they don’t seem like big “moment” songs so I think he is somehow going to have to pick something that doesn’t seem obvious. I would like Crystal to do I Can’t Stand the Rain. I would like Didi to do NeYo’s Because of You.
Siobhan is going to be able to pull off any of it. Andrew I just don’t care. Tim will do the Jackson 5 and have “fun with it”.

  82. Oooh, I just thought of something for Katie… what if she did like a Colbie Callait version of Just My Imagination? Like on a stool with a guitar, made a very wistful pop song out of it. That could fit her.

I would pay money to see Katie do “wistful.” I don’t think she has it in her.

  83. Btw guys – the studio versions of this week’s performances are already posted on youtube. I had a listen to some of them…….Gotta say –

    1) Crystal still rocks the most.
    2) Siobhan’s scream sounds better and more controlled on recordings as always and it was good.
    3) Andrew – Didn’t sound as bad as i thought.

Off to listen to somemore before i can decide which one to purchase…

  84. I would pay money to see Katie do “wistful.” I don’t think she has it in her.

LMAO! Well that begs the question… what CAN Katie pull off? Seriously. What kind of song would you believe coming out of Katie’s mouth? I can see love songs if they are not to deep… I really have no clue. She was fine on “At Last”, right? Hmmm…

  85. Well, there are a LOT of good songs on this list, so there are no excuses for poor song choices this week!!

I’d pay money to see either Aaron or Tim sing “With You” – David Archuleta style.

  86. I really hope the majority choose more contemporary songs. They don’t even need to change them up really, since few are r&b singers to begin with. If Mike and Andrew do songs sung by women, they’ll be deemed original as long as they sing them well (a big “if,” I realize, in Andrew’s case). Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, just no “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” or “Midnight Train to Georgia.”

(I would actually love if somebody sang “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” however. I’ve always loved that song. Maybe Lee or Casey could get away with that.)

ETA: Never mind: I just realized Michael Bolton had a hit with “Dock of the Bay” so all guys should avoid it like the plague! Sara Bareilles has a great cover version; maybe a gal should tackle it.

  87. LMAO! Well that begs the question… what CAN Katie pull off? Seriously. What kind of song would you believe coming out of Katie’s mouth? I can see love songs if they are not too deep…

That’s about the size of it.

    Angel of Mine, perhaps?

  88. Angel of Mine, perhaps?

That could work. Or a Toni Braxton song.. she’s another jazzy type phraser with a deeper than normal female voice…

Watch her pick Mariah Carey though. I bet she tries Vision of Love. SMH.

  89. I would advise no Alicia Keys, their voices are two specific. Especially with Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart. People Get Ready packs and emotional wallop and while I like Eva Cassidy’s version, Aretha’s version blows my mind. Unless Crystal does it nobody should touch it. No Stevie except Siobhan.

Aaron – Georgia on My Mind (country twist)
Katie – We Belong Together, (Rihanna has too distinct a voice,Katie isn’t clever enough to twist it)

    Andrew- U Remind Me (acoustic)
    Mike – Cruisin’ (guitar)
    Didi – Mercy Mercy Me
    Casey – It’s Your Thing
Lee – Sittin on the Dock of the Bay
    Crystal – Respect
Siobhan – Tell Me Something Good
    Tim – Don’t Be Cruel

  90. Nobody better sing my jam “Let’s Stay Together” unless they are going to be brilliant. And please nobody sing “No One,” that’s another song that has been done waaaayyy too many times on this show.

“No One” has been sung once in the competition rounds, by Felicia Barton. Of all of the songs that should be avoided, that simply is not one of them. People say Alicia has a distinct voice, but really Felicia sounded good, albeit karaoke, and she didn’t seem to be actively going out of her way to simulate Alicia’s tics or anything. As far as stylized artists go, Alicia is pretty middle of the road vocally, so a contestant with some guile could do something interesting with her. However, “No One” in particular is pretty strong vocally in recording in terms of sheer power; I wouldn’t trust most of this year’s contestants to hit those notes cleanly. “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” is a potentially interesting song; it has a really negligible range and has a pretty accessible hook (though is the Prince sample too important? Hmm…). I’d actually love to see a contestant give it a roll.

I don’t care if these kids might or might not sound good on older numbers, I’m praying they go contemporary. Really, karaoke of that Motwon variety is perhaps as forgettable as AI performances go. Seriously, do we need another version of Aaron Kelly singing “My Girl”? Even Siobhan and “Superstition” this week was not good, as far as choices go. And they really need a more interesting night after this week’s mess.

Then again, Crystal could do sound good with almost anything on this list. I wonder about Siobhan, but I fear the worst. Interested in what Didi will do; it’ll be interesting almost any direction she goes from here.

  91. That could work. Or a Toni Braxton song.. she’s another jazzy type phraser with a deeper than normal female voice…

Watch her pick Mariah Carey though. I bet she tries Vision of Love. SMH.

how about anita baker and sweet love? love me some anita. she also has a very distinctive jazzy/soul voice and vocal style that trips up a lot of accomplished singers i’ve heard trying to cover her songs. just throwing it out there, hoping to hear somebody sing something that hasn’t already been sung to death on this show, lol…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB5qhBnEOHk&feature=related

  92. I’d rather Lee didn’t sing anything Taylor has ever done. You just don’t want to put yourself in a position that has Simon even remembering Taylor Hicks. Not if you want to stay in it.

  93. Plus, the girl has no soul whatsoever. A lot of these songs might be out of her emotional range.

I beg to differ ! Crystal is a very soulful singer ,she feels therefore we feel.. That’s what it’s supposed to be about .. What do you think constitutes soulfullness ?

  94. http://www.dizzler.com/music/Taylor_Hicks

I’m a fan of Taylor Hicks’ “People get Ready”…if someone has mentioned it already, I apologize. I’d like to hear Lee try to tackle it really.

i can hear lee, or casey, pulling off that kind of version/arrangement of it… i want to throw wilson pickett’s ”in the midnight hour” in the mix too, for a change.

  95. #

You know this was a comment about Katie, and not Crystal, right?

So … you think that Katie has soulfulness?

  96. I’d rather Lee didn’t sing anything Taylor has ever done. You just don’t want to put yourself in a position that has Simon even remembering Taylor Hicks. Not if you want to stay in it.

Taylor never did it on the show…..I doubt Simon ever heard his version of anything pre-idol…lol

me and block quote aren’t getting along. ..

  97. Thanks Lucy ..yea I thought it was a reference to Crystal..

Whew, good! Now we’re on the same page; Crystal — full of soul! Katie — not so much!

  98. @Mark,

If anyone were to do Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart they would have to completely re-interpret the song, be an artist only a couple can do that and that would not be the right song for Crystal or Siobhan to song. Nobody would be able to do that Prince-esque whisper that Alicia accomplished. Without that the song is average IMO.

  99. Well so many great songs as long as I Want You Back,Who´s Loving You, Human Nature and Georgia on My Mind is not involved. Them songs belong to Matt Giraud.:)

  100. A number of the songs were written by Diane Warren. I would avoid these. Katie.

  101. What kind of song would you believe coming out of Katie’s mouth?

No One by Alica Keys. Not that I believe she would carry it off, but I believe she’d sing it because even though someone (Andrew?) did this in Hollywood it’s one of the more “current” songs (to appeal to the judges) and big enough to satisfy Katie’s preference for ballad singing. She can clomp around on stage making fierce faces… or Sweet Love by Anita Baker.

  102. What kind of song would you believe coming out of Katie’s mouth?

I think Katie would do well stickin’ with the early 90’s R&B teen “it” girls Monica & Brandy (don’t think either of the Aaliyah songs would be a good fit for her…I suppose she might be able to pull off “At Your Best”). I think “Have You Ever” would be a good choice or “Angel Of Mine”. I kind of hope she stays away from Alicia.

If Andrew falls flat again this week, I will officially give up on him for the remainder of the season. Please Andrew, forget pleasing the judges and just do your thing! He really ought to do well with this theme.

  103. how about anita baker and sweet love?

GREAT idea ggdoors. That is a good song for Katie’s voice.

Thanks Lucy ..yea I thought it was a reference to Crystal..

LOL! Yes, thanks lucy! I was indeed talking about Katie. Crystal should rule this week, the girl has tons of soul and has successfully gone gospel on is more than once. :)

  104. I thought Have you Ever would be a good song for Aaron, he could put a country spin on it.

  105. With the theme being SOUL and R & B week, I am surrpised there is only one James Brown song on the list. This will challenge the contestants and may produce some outlandish results. I can’t wait to see what Siobhan and Crystal will sing!

  106. My Wish List for the Top 10 Songs……

    1. Andrew Garcia – It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye (Boyz II Men) w Acoustic Guitar
    2. Katie Stevens – Have You Ever (Brandy)
    3. Michael Lynche – Rock With You (Michael Jackson)
    4. Lee Dewyze – Mercy Mercy Me (Marvin Gaye) w Acoustic Guitar
    5. Crystal Bowersox – Who’s Lovin You (Jackson 5)
    6. Didi Benami – Sweet Love (Anita Baker)
    7. Aaron Kelly – A Song For Mama (Boyz II Men)
    8. Casey James – Back At One (Brian McKnight)
    9. Tim Urban – Love Won’t Let Me Wait (Major Harris)
    10. Siobhan Magnus – Vision of Love (Mariah Carey)

  107. I wish either Siobhan or Crystal could sing Aniter Baker’s “Body and Soul”. Too bad it’s not in the list :(.

  108. PLEASE no “Vision of Love”. If there was ever a played out song, it’s that one. In fact, I think Mariah Carey songs should be banned from the list completely. Nobody can ever sing one of her songs without drawing comparisons, and even though I personally hate Mariah’s sometimes-screechy/sometimes-breathy vocals, people seem to think she can sing and that anybody who tries to sing one of her songs is doing karaoke. So NO MARIAH CAREY, PLEASE!!!

I love whoever suggested that Siobhan sing “Tell Me Something Good.” Now, THAT’S what I’m talkin’ ’bout. That girl would kill that song. Kill. it.

  109. I love whoever suggested that Siobhan sing “Tell Me Something Good.” Now, THAT’S what I’m talkin’ ’bout. That girl would kill that song. Kill. it.

Well there are very few songs Siobhan would NOT sound good on..but frankly I feel this song is way too old fashioned and frankly..corny for ANYBODY to sing…except maybe Tim who lives in “corny town”.

If Siobhan can sing Aretha and get away with it…I think she can make Mariah work. She is easily the best voice of All the girls, if not in the competition and she has to showcase that.

  110. Though I think Katie should stay as current (90’s and up) as possible, I bet she could pull off a good version of Whitney Houston’s “How will I know”. Its from Whitney’s first album (around age 23) and its about questioning how will I know he really loves me, how it feels etc. I think it would be a great song for the teen crowd the judges want her to appeal.

Andrew just needs to pick a song he’d sing to his wife/girlfriend and sing it. I’m a fan, but these last few weeks have been terrible.

  111. I totally think Didi should do “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King!!! She wouldn’t need to change it up too much. Just do some interesting riffs with the melody and I think it would be awesome! I <3 Didi! DIDI ROCKS!

  112. we all sure have our own opinions on who should do what. Well me too! I’m pretty sure I’ve probably chosen a couple of the songs already mentioned…,But here goes

Aaron. Don’t throw stones! “People Get Ready” He could get this right! OR “Stand By Me”, and I know it has been done and done.

Andrew. He really needs redemption. I think he can be a sweet, and personal singer, so ” I’ll Make Love To You”, OR “Human Nature”, OR
even “Because of you”. Hope he feels these out!

Casey. something sexy ” U Remind Me”, OR give soul country to “A
Rainy Night IN Georgia”. Maybe “Easy” as a last choice.

Siobhan. “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher”. OR “We Don’t Need
Another Hero”. Or even “Unbreak My Heart” (hmm “cruisin by Smokey eek)

Lee. “In The Midnight Hour” OR “Unchain My Heart”.

Katie. Agree with who said “how Will I Know Or ” My Guy”.

Crystle. Absolutely, “Midnight Train To Georgia”. Or “Don’t Leave Me This Way”( I think she could make this song hurt even more).

Tim. Well who knows, but maybe “What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted”.

Didi. Hee..”Shut UP And Drive”…Could be fun Or “Been Lovin You Too Long.” Not sure if I’m convicted on the last one!

Michael. For me I’d like to hear his Sam Cook Version of “Bring
    It On Home To Me

I just kept going down the list, and listening to each snippet, and
tried to think who came to mind!

It Has to be so Hard for these kids to decide unless they already
have one they are sure of, and have previously sung…Or take a
    stab in the Dark.
I sure wish them all good Luck up to a point. I just hope the failures are obvious to the voting public, as if feels so BAD When
the wrong three are in TBT!

  113. I wish all the singers luck this week! Hope the show is entertaining at least, I haven’t found anything to really latch onto and get excited about the last 2 weeks…
*Just a disclaimer: I’m not saying that any of these picks are sure fire winners or will help the contestants earn another week but it is what I want to hear come Tuesday & I want something interesting to shake things up.

    Big Mike
“Tired of Being Alone” (Al Green)
“Your love keeps lifting me. higher & higher” (Jackie Wilson)
any pick of Usher or Ray Charles

    Andrew Garcia
“Everytime I Close My Eyes” (Babyface)
“Love Won’t Let Me Wait” (Major Harris)
    “Uptight. Everything’s Alright” (Stevie W.)

    Aaron
“Song for Momma” (Boyz II Men)
“On the Wings of Love” (Jeffrey Osborne)
“On Bended Knee” (Boyz II Men)

    Crystal Bowersox
“Tell Me Something Good” (Chaka Khan)
“I Can’t Stand the Rain” (Tina Turner)
    “Back at One” (Brian McKnight)

    Didi Benami
“treat her like a lady” (Cornelius Brothers)
“Cruisin'” (Smokey Robinson/the Gwenyth Paltrow version)
“Don’t Leave Me This Way” (Thelma Huston)

  114. My only P.S. with Didi would be to WATCH the arrangements, I don’t want her to be cheesy. And I know that the Brian McKnight pick for Sox is totally weird but I think she do something different with it (sing sitting at the piano perhaps?)
    Tim Urban
“whatcha see is whatcha get” (The Dramatics)
    “Rock with You” (Michael Jackson)
    “Shop Around” (The Miracles)

    Casey
    “knock on wood” (Eddie Floyd)
“it’s your thing” (The Isley Brothers)
“Baby I Need Your Loving” (Four Tops)

    Siobhan M.
“Nowhere to Run” (Martha & the Vandellas)
    “We Belong Together” (Mariah)
    “Mercy Mercy Me” (Marvin Gaye)

    Lee
“You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me” (The Miracles)
“Mad” (Ne-Yo) <—- could totally steal Andrew's thunder if he produces a great vocal
"Bring it on Home to Me" (Sam Cooke)

    Katie S.
“Umbrella” (Rihanna) <<tons of acoustic versions online to study
"Save the Best for Last" (Vanessa Williams)
    "With You" (Chris Brown)

mmkay, so as I was looking through the list, Andrew and Mike were the easiest to find something for. I haven't been a huge Crystal fan but I did hear alot of the clips and think "she could kill on this!" The hardest to pick for were Siobhan, Tim, and Aaron only because he likes to countrify things. Oh and I realized I officially hate Old Motown-y sounds. :/

  115. First, I hope NO ONE tackles “Tracks of my Tears”. Adam knocked it out of the park with that one last year and I think they’d be setting themselves up for a fail.

That said, I’d LOVE to hear:

Casey – “Mustang Sally” complete with guitar riffs
Mike – “You make me Feel Brand New”
Lee – Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay
Andrew – You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me
Aaron – Easy or Sweet Love
Tim – Treat Her Like a Lady

Crystal – Bring it on Home to Me
Siobhan – Tell me Something Good
Didi – a slow version of You Keep me Hangin’ On
    Katie – Shop Around
