American Idol Sunday Ratings Recover, Win the Night for ABC

AMERICAN IDOL - "212 (Top 14)" - After the "American Idol" Top 20 tackled solo and celebrity duet performances, the judges narrowed down the field, revealing the Top 14 finalists. Now, they are handing over the reigns to America, who will vote to crown the next "American Idol." In this episode, the Top 14 contestants will perform on the iconic Idol stage for the first time, in hopes of winning over the hearts of viewers and being voted through to the next phase of the competition. The search for America's next superstar continues on The ABC Television Network, SUNDAY, APRIL 14 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT), streaming and on demand. (ABC/Eric McCandless) LIONEL RICHIE, KATY PERRY, LUKE BRYAN

Those predictions that American Idol would not survive airing opposite the highly anticipated Game of Thrones premiere on HBO didn’t hold up. In fact, American Idol ratings rose by a whopping 3/10ths of a point–from a 1.0 last week in the key 18-49 demo to a 1.3 this week. American Idol also easily won the night–in broadcast TV of course–for ABC.

What was true last season appears to be holding up this season. American Idol only falters when up against award shows or The Voice. Last Sunday, American Idol fell 2/10ths of a point when it aired opposite the Academy of Country Music Awards. Last season, the lowest rated shows aired opposite the ACMs and Billboard Music Awards, respectively (The BBMAs are airing on a Wednesday this year).  Idol ratings on Monday, when the show goes head to head with The Voice, are typically lower than Sunday.

So there you have it! Winter is coming. But not for American Idol
