American Idol 14 singer JAX releases “Kickin’ & Screamin’,” from her upcoming debut EP Funny, co-written/produced by Colin Louis Dieden and Ruffian. The track is also available on Spotify.
“‘I loved being in the studio for this one,’ said JAX. ‘…we had just as much of a party as the song sounds. Colin Dieden is such an awesome friend and artist. It’s always a blast recording with him and the crew out in LA.'” Indeed, “Stars,” the first cut released from Funny is a piano driven ballad. In “Kickin’ and Screamin'” JAX finds her groove and takes it to the dance floor.
JAX, from East Brunswick, New Jersey, competed, and placed 3rd on season 14 of American Idol. (Jennifer Lopez has stated she thought she could have won the whole thing and Billboard noted how she “persevered through a combination of music smarts, likability and yes, talent.”)
After Idol wrapped and she performed at her sold out NYC headlining show, JAX was ready to launch her singing career when she was sidelined with a diagnosis of thyroid cancer. “It was very unexpected,” JAX explained to My Central Jersey. “When you’re 20 years old, you have this Superman entitlement mentality, like you’re indestructible. And sometimes all it takes is God telling you it’s time to take a break for you to understand that you are most certainly not.” She has since had her thyroid removed, completed radiation and is now healthy and ready to return to her music career.
JAX will release Funny, her debut EP, independently on Jan. 27. The tracks, all written post American Idol, include co-writers/producers Colin Louis Dieden (from The Mowgli’s), Ruffian (Selena Gomez, Zedd), Larzz Principato (Halsey) and Nick Marsh (Chris Brown).” The EP is available for pre-order on iTunes.
