American Idol: Dennis Lorenzo Feels Singing Last Caused Elimination

AMERICAN IDOL - (ABC/Eric McCandless) DENNIS LORENZO

Three contestants were eliminated from American Idol’s Disney Night performance episode this week, including Dennis Lorenzo. The singer, who performed “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from the Lion King  told TMZ he believes singing last played a part in his elimination.

The way Dennis explained it, there was plenty of fretting amongs contestants about how their place in the performance order would be affected by the new “real time” voting system.

“There were concerns about certain people going first because they were worried that they would get forgotten,” said Dennis. “If they saw someone in the middle, they would say ‘I’m going to change my vote.'” According to Dennis, people who sang toward the end of the lineup were also worried–afraid that fans wouldn’t have enough time to vote for them.

Voting opened at the beginning of the show, and closed after the last commercial break, after which the lowest vote getters of the night were eliminated.  Viewers only had a few minutes after his performance ended to vote for him.

Dennis said the producers “let us know that they ran many tests and made sure that it was fair. When you’re in a position like this, you trust it.”

But then after the show was over Dennis claimed that, “certain people came up and said ‘well I didn’t have enough time or I tried to vote for you and I couldn’t’.”

“That sounds like a technical error to me,” Dennis said.

Dennis didn’t mince words: “Do I feel that it sucked that I went last? Sure. But what can you do. Do I think that me going last played a part in me being eliminated that night? Of course I do.”

Ironically, in an overnight voting situation, performing last is optimum, as the singer’s performance is the last viewers remember. Dennis was going to have an uphill climb advancing to the Top 7 in any case. But his short voting window surely did not help him. Certainly the opportunity to garner votes from casual fans was affected.

Watch Dennis share his thoughts on the new American Idol voting system, and how he felt it influenced his elimination. Currently, Dennis has an EP available on digital outlets, Dennis Lorenzo Unplugged.
