American Idol season 7 winner David Cook is in New York City, deep in preparation for his debut on Broadway. In two weeks the singer starts his run in the hit musical Kinky Boots. Check out a promo video David posted on his Instagram account below.
“I am so excited to be a part of telling this story,” David says in the clip. “The show is such an amazing spectacle by itself. Partner that with a really good message–certainly one that resonates now. To get to be a part of telling that story is a huge honor.”
About the character he plays, Charlie Price, the son of a shoe factory owner who reluctantly takes over his father’s business, David says, “Charlie is driven, and also looking for acceptance. The way he navigates both of those…struggles with both of those and ultimately finds his way…is what I grabbed hold of with this script.”
Kinky Boots is based on the 2005 film about a struggling English shoe factory owner who finds an unlikely savior and friend in a drag queen. The production won several Tonys, including best musical and best original score for Cyndi Lauper. High profile performers who have played Charlie Price include Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie and Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears.
David’s limited run in Kinky Boots begins April 3 through to May 5 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
