American Idol’s David Cook to Make Broadway Debut in Kinky Boots

Who saw this coming? American Idol season 7 winner David Cook is about to make his Broadway debut in the Tony award winning musical, Kinky Boots.

David will step into the role of Charlie Price, the son of a shoe factory owner who reluctantly takes over his father’s business. He’s set for a limited run from April 3 to May 5 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

“I am so thrilled and honored that I am going to be part of this show and get to work with so many amazing people!” Cook said in a statement to Billboard magazine. “I love the collaborative aspect of theater, the idea of being part of a creative team and working it out in front of an audience each night. I can’t wait to join this incredible cast in Kinky Boots including the very talented Wayne Brady and Kirstin Maldonado.”

Kirstin Maldonado is another reality star–a member of the a’cappella sensations (and Sing Off winners) Pentatonix. She’ll be extending her run as Lauren past April 8 until April 26.

Kinky Boots is based on the 2005 film about a struggling English shoe factory owner who finds an unlikely savior and friend in a drag queen. The production won several Tonys, including best musical and best original score for Cyndi Lauper. High profile performers who have played Charlie Price include Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie and the current lead, Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears.

On Friday, David will release his new EP Chromance, which began as a PledgeMusic campaign project.

David isn’t the only American Idol alum headed to their Broadway debut. Earlier this week, season 5 runner-up Katharine McPhee announced she’d be taking the lead role in the musical Waitress beginning April 10.
