ABC has begun promoting the 2020 season of American Idol, set to premiere in February. The network tied the first promo to Disney’s live Little Mermaid special. A second promo aired during the 2019 CMA Awards on Wednesday (Nov 13). And with Carrie Underwood, the season 4 winner, co-hosting alongside Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, the tie in was perfect!
Check out the promo below, which gives fans a first look at a couple of hopefuls singing for the judges. The singer’s performances are contrasted to Carrie, one of the franchises most successful alums, accepting her own CMA award, shortly after she won in 2005. Could one of the hopefuls featured in the promo win a CMA just like Carrie, the promo asks?
Although Carrie didn’t win any CMAs on Wednesday, her trophy room ain’t empty!
In the meantime, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan finished a five city audition tour with host Ryan Seacrest and mentor Bobby Bones that included trips to Washington DC, Milwaukee, Savannah, Los Angeles and Sunriver, Oregon.

The Sunriver auditions included a group of firefighters singing Lionel’s “All Night Long” in front of the judges. Lionel seems to really dig it. It’s really something! The auditions took place at the Sunriver resort on Nov 7 and 8. Next up, Hollywood Week, scheduled for December.
