American Idol contestant calls Katy Perry joke “embarrassing” and “hurtful”

Sara Beth is a 25 year old mother of three who recently auditioned for American Idol. Judge Katy Perry made a joke at her expense that set some fans off, and Sara has taken to social media, calling the remarks “embarrassing” and “hurtful.”

During her audition in front of Katy, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, the judges noted her youthful appearance, agreeing that she looked only 16. When Sara mentioned her three children. Katy jumped out of her seat looking shocked.

”Honey, you been laying on the table too much”

”If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m going to pass out,” Sara said. ”Honey, you been laying on the table too much,” Katy replied. After the episode aired, some fans took to social media to call Katy out for being rude and insensitive.

“Katy Perry made a joke that wasn’t super kind”

In a Tik Tok clip with the comments shut off, Sara calls Katy out.

Sara explained that American Idol “scouted” her to audition in front of the judges. “At the start of my audition before I sang, I mentioned that I had 3 children and was a young mother and Katy Perry made a joke that wasn’t super kind.”

She continued, “I don’t really have too much to say on my feelings about it, because it’s probably pretty self explanatory.”

“It was embarrassing to have that on TV”

“It was embarrassing to have that on TV,’ Sara confessed, “And it was hurtful and….that’s that.”

She addressed her fellow young mothers next, “I did want to take this opportunity to say that I think that women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool, and I think that mom shaming is super lame.” Sara continued, “It’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman…I see all of the young moms and just moms in general who have commented on all of the videos and posts…I see you and I hear you and I am grateful for you.”

“Keep loving your babies,” she said. “Nobody deserves to feel crappy about that. I think if you’re a good mama and you love your babies that’s all that really matters and other comments don’t feel necessary.”

Katy’s “yes” vote sent Sara to Hollywood

After performing the Amy Winehouse song “You Know I’m No Good” Katy warned Sara, that’s not enough and proceeded to coach her though a rendition of Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets.” Katy accused her, basically, of not wanting it bad enough. “If it’s not your dream, it’s not going to go far. I also respect everyone that’s walking through that door who will lay down their lives for this golden ticket.” But after Lionel said no, Katie delivered the yes that sent Sara to Hollywood.

American Idol airs every Sunday on ABC at 8 pm ET/PT.
