Monday’s American Idol Top 24 closer was eventful (Read our Recap). As predicted, Ryan Seacrest confirmed that Kenedi Anderson dropped out of the competition. The young singer didn’t give a reason except to say that it was “difficult” and “personal.”
However, 11 other singers were still in it and playing to win it. I didn’t like tonight’s episode as much as last night’s. But there were still some standout performances. Leah Marlene’s flip of “Call Me” was the standout of the night. Fritz Hager gets the “gave it all he had” award. The best vocal goes to Katyrah Love. But YIKES that song choice. Lady K really blew it after choosing to sing “Before He Cheats” over a bluesy song in her wheelhouse. Before her Top 24 misfire, Lady delivered stellar performances. Cameron Whitcomb’s lack of seriousness is beginning to grate. But his charm will win the day, probably. Sir Blayke is still delivering boring performances. He’s probably leaving the competition on Sunday.
It’s not clear if Kenedi’s exit will count for one of the two singers leaving from Part 2. But although Idol aired her performance, she wasn’t up for a vote. To keep things fair, Idol will have to ditch that whole “season 20 top 20” shtick and go with 19.
Kenedi’s performance was solid, but she had pitch problems. The “Platinum Ticket” deal didn’t really work out as planned. Only HunterGirl has really lived up to the hype.
Bebe Rexha concentrated more on the contestants’ performance skills than their vocals. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. But overall, I enjoyed Jimmie Allen as a mentor more. He seemed truly invested in the singers in his charge, while Bebe makes the rounds of all these shows. It’s kind of a side gig for her!
A 3 hour extravaganza
Next Sunday, Idol will eliminate four singers, and the contestants sing again for your votes. Ryan mentioned alums returning to perform. The episode will be taped in front of a studio audience this week. Watch out for spoilers!
