You guys. I am pretty excited about American Idol season 20. Tonight’s episode, which featured 12 of the Top 24, was full of amazing singing. Backstories are still in play, but the emotional moments were never overwhelming or overwrought. (Read our Recap)
Guest mentor Jimmie Allen could have been tad more critical while assisting the contestants, but he was a mensch. He obviously boosted the singers’ confidence. He’d been in their shoes. He left American Idol season 10 in the Top 40, and he’s not mad about it at all. He’s an example that every experience, even the nos, are another step toward the ultimate goal. And his moments with Mike Parker, bonding over being black artists who love country music, were truly touching. I might have had something in my eye for a minute.

Favorite performers tonight in no particular order: Nicolina Bozzo, HunterGirl, and Emyrson Flora. Honorable mentions to Jacob Moran and Danielle Finn. Tristen Gressette isn’t the best performer, but he’s hella entertaining.
Tomorrow night (April 11) the remaining 12 (or maybe only 11?) take the stage to sing for your votes, with Bebe Rexha serving as guest mentor. Next Sunday, the Top 20 will be revealed. But the episode will be taped ahead (probably on Tuesday April 12). Keep an eye out for spoilers.
