Then, the show broadcasts coast to coast for the first time EVER on a Monday (April 25)! It’s the Judges Song Contest, which finds the singers choosing a song out of three picked for them by Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan. Update: In an Instagram story, Leah Marlene says two singers will be eliminated on Monday night, leaving a Top 9, But an Idol promo says a “Top 10 will be revealed.” so ???.

Is American Idol’s ‘Judges Song Contest’ Trolling Its Struggling Rival?

It’s a lot going on with the singers, who have to learn two songs this week. Season 16 country star Gabby Barrett will mentor the Top 14 for Sunday’s show.

American Idol 2022: Full Season 20 Schedule (Updated 4/22)

In the meantime, I’ll take a shot at ranking the Top 14. Look at the bottom of the page for your poll results taken after Monday’s Top 14 reveal.

These aren’t ranked according to favorites. These are in order of how strong I believe a contestant is coming off of last week’s performances. The lists will likely change week to week. And of course, y’all will probably want to fight my on some of my decisions!

The four wildcards are ranked below the Top 10 who advanced on viewer votes.

Top 14 Ranked

14 – Allegra Miles – Allegra got by last week on the strength of a great original song. She took a risk, and it paid off. But I suspect she’ll have trouble outshining her dynamic competition. Even out of the four wildcards, she’s the least charismatic. Still, I hope she lasts a bit longer at least. She’s an interesting singer and a talented songwriter.

13 – Ava Maybee – Ava has the most unique style of everybody left in the competition. Her burnished alto, creative phrasing and presentation makes her an intriguing artist. But her performances can be uneven. Sometimes she bites off more than she can chew.

12 – Jay Copeland – Hoo boy. Jay is a Platinum Ticket winner whom the judges gushed over during his Austin audition like he was the second coming. Spoiler alert: He’s not! He’s an energetic performer whose singing is solid, but not remarkable. What’s more, he hasn’t learned how to connect with an audience. He’ll be lucky to make it past the Top 11.

11 – Tristen Gressett – Tristen is a better performer than vocalist, and should probably stick to high energy performances with his guitar. Anything that shows vocal weakness or that is too far out of his wheelhouse is going to bring him down.

10 – Emyrson Flora – The youngest singer left could be the season’s dark horse. She’s ranked low this week, but Emyrson could be this season’s surprise. She’s comfortable on stage, and with the right song she really shines.

9 – Mike Parker – Does Mike really want to be a country singer? Sometimes it seems like he’s trying to fit into a box suggested to him by the judges. He sings country songs like a soul singer. There is nothing wrong with that, but he’s still an R&B singer? If Mike could find his confidence, he might stick around for awhile.

8 – Christian Guardino – When Christian isn’t oversinging, he’s pretty good. But I have a feeling the big notes are his super power. The more he does, the more votes he’ll garner. He’s probably safe this week

7 – Nicolina Bozzo – Nicolina is a powerful singer, who is best singing songs where she feels a personal connection to the material. She’s best on big ballads, but can struggle on upbeat numbers. Her lack of versatility could hurt her.

6 – Leah Marlene – Leah not only has a terrific voice, but she’s also an accomplished musician and songwriter. She needs to be careful not to let her “quirkiness” overshadow her artistry. But the combo of artistry and energetic and positive vibes is what makes Leah irresistible. If she continues to choose the right songs, she could make the Top 5, at least.

5 – Lady K – Lady K’s soulful singing is effortless. But after her wrongheaded Top 24 performance of Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” it’s clear Lady won’t succeed if she ventures too far out of her soul/gospel wheelhouse.

4 – Daniel Marshall – I know. Daniel is an amateur singer who needs work on his vocals. But as a good looking, ex-football playing bro-country dude, he’s got a popular lane to himself. He won’t make the finale, but he could go far.

3 – Fritz Hager – Fritz has a habit of allowing his vocals to get away from him. But it’s usually because his delivery is so passionate, he gets caught up in emotion at the expense of perfect notes. It’s a thing that actually works in his favor. His performances are mesmerizing. If he keeps it up, he could make the Top 5 or farther.

2 – HunterGirl – HunterGirl is the remaining “Platinum Ticket” winner who has lived up to the judges’ hype. She’s an engaging, radio ready country singer with impressive songwriting skills. She could take it all.

1 – Noah Thompson – Noah Thompson could probably get by being a talented Americana artist. But he also has a knack for flipping songs from other genres, like Rihanna’s “Stay” and making them his own. Noah nails a song’s emotion with beautiful simple phrasing. He’s passionate, while being completely present in the moment. I’ll be surprised if he’s not in the final.

American Idol Top 14 Reveal: Who Was Robbed?

I agree with the results here. Out of the six contestants eliminated this week, Jacob seemed most likely to possibly be saved by the judges, or squeak through on votes. These eliminations were just about right (I would have swapped Dan Marshall for anybody on this list, though).

  1. Nobody was robbed – 26.57%
  2. Jacob Moran – 19.73%
  3. Elli Rowe – 13.93%
  4. Cadence Baker – 11.51%
  5. Katyrah Love – 10.95%
  6. Cameron Whitcomb – 8.86%
  7. Sage – 8.45%
