American Idol 2022 Hollywood Week: SEVEN Alums on Board to Mentor

(ABC/Eric McCandless) LUKE BRYAN, KATY PERRY, LIONEL RICHIE

American Idol Hollywood Week begins airing next Monday March 28. The Season 20 twist will be that several alums and the current winner are returning to the show. The seven alums will be on board to help the contestants navigate the tricky waters of the gruelling Hollywood Round.

We previously reported that David Cook (s7 winner), Ruben Studdard (S2 winner), Jordin Sparks (s6 winner) and Lauren Alaina (s10 runner up) were on board to mentor. But now Haley Reinhart (S10 2nd runner up), Lee Dewyze (S9 winner) and Chayce Beckham, the reigning champ have announced their involvement as well.

Hollywood Week kicks off with the “Genre Challenge” and each American Idol alum will coach the contestants in their particular genre. For this crucial first round, each contestant chooses a song that reflects their personal genre. Later, the judges–Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan–bring each contestant on stage, grouped according to genre, to reveal if the singers stay for the next round (Duets Challenge) or are sent home.

During today’s official announcements on social media, the alums revealed which genre they are mentoring. David Cook mentors the Rock genre, Lauren Alaina mentors Country, Lee DeWyze mentors Indie/Folk, Haley Reinhart will be mentoring Soul, Ruben Studdard will be mentoring R&B. Jordin Sparks doesn’t mention her genre in her announcement, but it’s probably Pop.

Chayce Beckham is probably on hand to offer advice and moral support. By the time the Genre Challenge airs on Monday, Chayce will have released his first post-Idol solo single titled “Tell Me Twice.”
