At the end of Tuesday night’s (Nov 21) Dancing with the Stars season 25 finale, host Tom Bergeron announced a special all-athletes edition of of the competition to air in the spring of 2018.

According to a press release from ABC, ten athletes from all corners of the sports world will be teamed up with the show’s professional dancers and compete on the ballroom floor for a chance to win the coveted Mirrorball trophy.

Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, will return to host the special edition of Dancing with the Stars. The athletes will perform choreographed dance routines that are judged by a panel of renowned ballroom experts, as well as viewer votes.

Earlier Tom tweeted that season 26 would air in the fall of 2018 while the “four week mini-season” in the spring would be “a bite size, spray tanned spin-off.”

UPDATE: Tom Bergeron adds via twitter that the Athletes edition of Dancing with the Stars will air in April. I wonder if this means that American Idol will air on Sundays and Mondays for the first few weeks? The ABC Idol reboot is scheduled to premiere on Sunday March 11.

ABC has yet to announce its full mid-season schedule or a specific premiere date for the all-athletes edition of Dancing with the Stars. More details should be forthcoming.
