  1. Wow Kris’s LLWD is on the list for next week, that you can choose from. Oh my I wonder if anyone is going to try and sing it.If so any guesses on who.

  2. Wow Kris’s LLWD is on the list for next week, that you can choose from. Oh my I wonder if anyone is going to try and sing it.If so any guesses on who.

Wow. That song is very difficult to perform live (and Kris does so fabulously). I’m not sure who could pull that off. Crystal probably could. Maybe Casey.

  3. Wow Kris’s LLWD is on the list for next week, that you can choose from. Oh my I wonder if anyone is going to try and sing it.If so any guesses on who.

They do not need to remind the audience of S8. That would be an incredibly stupid song choice IMO. Kris is head and shoulders above the guitar players on the show.

  4. Wow Kris’s LLWD is on the list for next week, that you can choose from. Oh my I wonder if anyone is going to try and sing it.If so any guesses on who.

No one will even attempt it. Too too many words in the chorus.

  5. No one will even attempt it. Too too many words in the chorus.

Yeah. That was my first thought too.

    I bet Aaron does it.LOL

  7. Next week’s list is up if anyone cares… 77 songs, lots of cheese, and pretty much every Original Winner’s Song (TM) recorded.

“Drive” by Incubus is on there. I swear to God that I will power vote for any contestant who does that song… it’s one of my absolute favorites.

  8. Wow Kris’s LLWD is on the list for next week, that you can choose from. Oh my I wonder if anyone is going to try and sing it.

Attempting that would not be a good idea. It would be very hard to pull off that kind of wordiness in a little compressed snippet!

Inspirational songs night always reminds me of poor Cook and his palm-writing and his sad, earnest face (but thanks for the great studio version of “Innocent” ’cause I love it).

  9. I bet Aaron does it.LOL

If NOTarchie were to attempt that, I might not put my pool points on him. (Okay, that’s a lie. I’m putting my points on that kid until he exits my screen for good.)

  10. Wow Kris’s LLWD is on the list for next week, that you can choose from. Oh my I wonder if anyone is going to try and sing it.If so any guesses on who.

If annyone does try this I will laugh so hard. Though can you imagine Simon trying to claim that someone did this better then the original since he’s still so sour grapes about the end of last season?

Seriously, trying this would be stupid for most of them. Kris has all the words down but comparing his performances of it now to when he first started singing it, it’s obvious that it’s hard to do and takes a lot of practice.

So of course, watch Tim or Aaron go for it.

  11. The ONLY way someone could successfully pull of a song like LLWD in the context of the competition would be if they did a slo-mo cover. Doing it as is would be like begging the voters to send you home. It’s just one of those songs that comes off karaoke when done live (when not done by the original artist).

  12. I bet Aaron does it.LOL

No way, he’s totally gonna do “Angels.” As much as I inexplicably adore him… there are exactly five country songs on that list.

  13. OK, this song list is making me laugh. Really, the only version of Amazing Grace they could find was was SuBo’s? :)

  14. Sbalk017 – hey! Where can i view that list??

It was right on the front page of Itunes… you might have to wait a minute for the ads to cycle through.

  15. Did I miss it… Where is the list?

ETA: Thanks … I stopped looking on itunes because it was never seemed like got around to posting the songs.

  16. Wow Kris’s LLWD is on the list for next week, that you can choose from. Oh my I wonder if anyone is going to try and sing it.If so any guesses on who.

uh oh… like other said, a lot of words in the chorus and not much time
    to get it right!

what’s the them for next week btw and where is this list?

  17. Haha…it’s like the Island of Misfit Coronation Singles! No Boundaries seems to be missing….hmmmmmm…. ;)

Tim with “World” in the Pimp Spot, if you please.

  18. I would FLOVE to see Timmeh do LLWD. He totally should! maybe bring back the reggae for it.

  19. Wow, they do have “Changes” in there, I thought Simon was full of BS when he said Crystal should try a Bowie song because they didn’t have the clearance but they do at least for this one.

  20. Please no switchfoot!!!! I HATE switchfoot! I would love for Crystal to sing I’ll Stand by You. I want a really vulnerable performance from her like her preidol work.

  21. I think Aaron will do So Small.

Or My Wish from RF. He’s a big Rascal Flatts fan.

  22. Glad to see Alicia Keys mentoring. I’m sure she will be one of the better mentors of the season

  23. Martina McBride’s “Anyway” is a cool song – Siobhan should sing that one. Lots of big vocals. Don’t scream.

So we have “Angels,” which was done by Archie. “Dare You to Move,” which was done by Cook.

    “Dream Weaver”? For real? Bwah!

    And yeah, holy coronation songs!

Timmeh should *totally* sing “I Will Survive.” Hee.

Lordy, please people don’t sing some of these drippier songs. Just say NO to the Titanic song. If someone sings “Impossible Dream” I will laugh. A lot. And oh, man, Magic Rainbows. No matter how David runs from it, it will never never never die.

I don’t know. That song list makes me worry about next week being one big sapfest.

  24. I wish “I’d love to change the world” were in the list. Siobhan would scream the hell out of Simon hahahaha.

  25. I can see Aaron singing Robbie Williams “Angels” or Rascal Flatts “My Wish.”

I kinda hope Crystal sings Five for Fighting’s “World” – I love that song!

  26. I’m Coming Out…is an inspirational song…ummm…o.k…..

I’ve Had The Time Of My Life…is an inspirational song…ummm…sure

I was soooooo hoping they would have had Chris Sligh’s Empty Me on the list, just to watch Simon’s head explode.

This list has a dearth of Christian music on it for a list of inspirational songs. Pretty much, there’s Amazing Grace and that’s it. They didn’t even include Jesus, Take The Wheel. Jeesh.

  27. Ugh – that song list is creeping me out. And the coronation songs? Are you kidding me? They’re all horrid.

At least they didn’t make NoBo available – because could you just imagine anyone trying to sing that – maybe if they were trying to get on Kara’s good side.

  28. Ugh – that song list is creeping me out. And the coronation songs? Are you kidding me? They’re all horrid.

Next week is gonna suck. I guess they don’t have much of a choice with the songs since its IGB week.

  29. The “inspirational” list:

What, no “We Are All Innocent?!” :-) But, thankfully, also no “Dream On” either.

Any fan of S7 knows EXACTLY what I’m saying… lol. What a mess that night was…

  30. MJ I just put the list up over in the other thread can you please delete it for me. Thanks.I really hope no one trys Kris’s LLWD.I don’t know if anyone could pull it off.But who knows. But I think it would be very hard to do.

  31. LLWD is a tough song to sing live. I don’t think anyone would try it.

  32. This list has a dearth of Christian music on it for a list of inspirational songs. Pretty much, there’s Amazing Grace and that’s it. They didn’t even include Jesus, Take The Wheel. Jeesh.

And there is no Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Buddhist music!! Can you believe it?! Seriously though, singing an overtly Christian song is not a good idea on the show (Mandisa)

  33. LOL, don’t draw on your hand, peeps. Just don’t do it. Then everyone will call you smug and/or a douche and your fans will be sad.

Poor David. Will never forget how *sad* he looked when he was finished singing.

Please, please, please nobody sing that damn Titanic song. ‘K?

  34. Why does that “Holding Out for a Hero” song make me think of some magician dude? Did some magician dude use it on a special? Am I nuts here?

(I actually always liked that stupid song)

  35. NOTArchie singing You Light Up My Life! Awesome. I think VFTW would dump Timmeh for that.

  36. For Lee, I would love to see “Drive”, “Better Days”, or “Calling All Angels”… all some of my favorite songs ever.

  37. Why does that “Holding Out for a Hero” song make me think of some magician dude? Did some magician dude use it on a special? Am I nuts here?

(I actually always liked that stupid song)

The fairy godmother in Shrek 2 :)

  38. I would FLOVE to see Timmeh do LLWD. He totally should! maybe bring back the reggae for it.

This makes me wish that NoBo were an option, just because in the Jim/Kradison interview Kris talked about doing NoBo with a reggae version and Allison and Adam both tried to do it in that interview.

  39. ha thanks for moving my post!

Um, yeah. Next to no country songs. Considering that every other country song is insperational, and this is coming from a fan, I’m slightly dissapointed. So Aaron’s gonna do a repeat. Or something super ballad-y, like “Angels” or “Stand By You.”

I want Crystal to step outta her box and do something either totally amazing or bad. Preferably totally amazing. Just something different. But if we’re going predictable, “Hands” by Jewel fits right in her wheelhouse.

Siobahn is gonna scream. So, “Holding Out For A Hero” or “I’m Coming Out”?

Lee: Seriously. Incubus. Sit down on a stool and casually strum an acoustic and sing it like yourself, in tune, and I will looooove it.

Casey: The obvious choice would be Chad Kroger’s “Hero” but maybe something a little out of the box?

Mike: “Flying Without Wings.” Cause you know he’s just Ruben 2.0, and there’s really not a better male R7B song on there.

Teflon Timmeh: Really, does it matter? Tim is here to stay.

  40. Ugh to “inspirational,” but some of the songs on the list were at least from made this decade. And I do so some good songs on the list, amidst all the sap.

This show desperately needs to get out of it’s creaky themes, like Stones, Beatles and followed by going backwards, to Elvis?! It really doesn’t help this show not seem creaky, when the song choices inherently are.

Well lots of room for good and bad choices on this list.

Given how this season has been going with song choices though…yeah.

  41. LOL, don’t draw on your hand, peeps. Just don’t do it. Then everyone will call you smug and/or a douche and your fans will be sad.

Poor David. Will never forget how *sad* he looked when he was finished singing.

Definitely one of Cook’s worst performances, but I do love the studio version. And thinking about how he wrote “give back” on his hand still makes my heart melt.

  42. I’m Coming Out…is an inspirational song…ummm…o.k…..

Well, it could be inspirational for members of the LGBT community who are struggling with the decision to come out…..

Just kidding, that’s a hoot that it’s included. I’m sure there are some other whoppers on there, haven’t had time to scan the list yet.

  43. NOTArchie singing You Light Up My Life! Awesome. I think VFTW would dump Timmeh for that.

Do you have any idea how much that would make me laugh? I’d be cracking up for hours.

I see the point of the song list, in relation to IGB. And, I like that there’s some newer stuff on it. But, that list is loaded with land mines, and these kids need to be very, very careful. Way too easy to come off super cheesy with about 75% of these tunes.

Except of course Jackie Wilson’s Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher, which is one of the greatest songs EVER.

  44. Mike: “Flying Without Wings.” Cause you know he’s just Ruben 2.0, and there’s really not a better male R7B song on there.

He can sing “I Believe I Can Fly” – that’s on there. I actually kinda like that (R. Kelley) – should I be ashamed? :) Except it was from that stupid Michael Jordan vs. Bugs Bunny movie.

Definitely one of Cook’s worst performances, but I do love the studio version.

Studio version is awesome and is still on my iPod. And *I* didn’t think he was smug, he sorta broke my heart.

The fairy godmother in Shrek 2

Figures it was from a cartoon movie! That’s all I get to watch anymore with little kids.

  45. I am doomed to disappointment, because now I can’t get past Timmeh singing LLWD…reggae.

    sigh.

Thanks “inspirational” songs for giving me a dream…then crushing it.

I can’t get over “Dream Weaver.” Hee.

How about “You Light Up My Life”? Yeeowza.
Hey Mike, sing TOML, mkay? Thanx.

  47. I bet Crystal is going to do Changes.

I will vote for anyone who does Drive and doesn’t butcher it. I love that song.

  48. Casey: The obvious choice would be Chad Kroger’s “Hero” but maybe something a little out of the box?

Casey (for me) hasn’t been picking obvious choices. I hope he continues to pick something a little obscure.

  49. He can sing “I Believe I Can Fly” – that’s on there. I actually kinda like that (R. Kelley) – should I be ashamed? Except it was from that stupid Michael Jordan vs. Bugs Bunny movie.

Ah I forgot about that one! That would work. He could also do a pretty competent version of “What a Wonderful World” possibly with a guitar.

  50. I will vote for anyone who does Drive and doesn’t butcher it. I love that song.

Yeah, I love it, too. I’d like to see Lee do that one or “Better Days.” If he doesn’t butcher it ;)

Singing a former Idol coronation song is a bad idea, ask Syesha. She attempted the Fantasia one and… no.

  51. He could also do a pretty competent version of “What a Wonderful World” possibly with a guitar.

I actually thought of that, too. It’s a great song.

Hee, “The River of Dreams.” If someone can make that *not* cheesy, I would vote for them, lots.

  52. Whenever I hear “Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In” all I can think of is the last scene in the “40 Year Old Virgin”….

  53. Well, if I was forced by gunpoint to pick a song out of that list, I’d have to go with People Get Ready, which was also available during R&B week — I was really surprised that neither Crystal or Casey picked it.

  54. He can sing “I Believe I Can Fly” – that’s on there. I actually kinda like that (R. Kelley) – should I be ashamed

No you shouldn’t. I love that song. Before R. Kelley became an uber-weirdo, I just loved his songwriting. I thought he was like an R&B poet. Then, he kind of lost his mind.

Casey (for me) hasn’t been picking obvious choices. I hope he continues to pick something a little obscure.

Totally agree. So far, I’ve liked a lot of Casey’s interesting choices.

  55. So the obvious choices to me are Lee singing Chad Kroeger’s Hero and Casey singing Billy Joel’s River of Dreams. I hope that neither actually does that. It’s better when there’s some surprise involved. Also, I feel like the only former Idol who should have songs in the pool is Kelly Clarkson. Jordin, David, and Kris all seem too recent (although it’s hilarious that No Boundaries didn’t make the list!)!

  56. Also, I feel like the only former Idol who should have songs in the pool is Kelly Clarkson. Jordin, David, and Kris all seem too recent

But it’s Magic Rainbows! Magic Rainbows has *powers*, I tell you. No matter how fast David runs from it… it keeps catching him anyway :)

  57. Heaven Help Us All

That’s exactly what I thought to myself after looking at the list. YUCK is all I can say to the prospect of next week. This group will pick the safest, slowest, sappiest, and oldest songs on the list, mark my words.

  58. So the obvious choices to me are Lee singing Chad Kroeger’s Hero and Casey singing Billy Joel’s River of Dreams.

Well, I don’t think anyone should sing Kroeger’s Hero, because it’s lame. But actually, I think it’s Lee who might do a really cool version of River of Dreams. I can totally see that.

  59. Whenever I hear “Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In” all I can think of is the last scene in the “40 Year Old Virgin”….

lmao my exact thought proscess when seeing that song title: “Hey, wasn’t that at the end of the 40-year-old virgin?”

  60. Lee –Drive by Incubus
    Mike-people get ready
Siobhan-I’ll stand by you by Pretenders
    Crystal-changes by bowie
Tim-World by five for fighting or show me what I’m looking for
    Aaron-My Wish by Rascal Flatts
    Casey–

  61. Aaron will do “A Moment Like This” Since he’s already song idol songs from David Cook, David Archuleta, Kris Allen… and now it’s Kelly’s turn!

  62. I can’t imagine anyone would tackle LLWD. What was the song Sarver tried last year that had a lot of words? It really did him in.

  63. I think Tim will do “Go The Distance” since it doesn’t get any cheesier than Michael Bolton…

  64. All these inspirational Idol Coronation songs (“This is my Now”, “The Time of My Life”), and somehow they left off “No Boundaries”.

    I can’t imagine why…

  65. What was the song Sarver tried last year that had a lot of words? It really did him in.

Ain’t going Down (Till The Sun Comes Up) by Garth Brooks. I don’t know why I remember that.

  66. hypnoticwhisper:

I think Tim will do “Go The Distance” since it doesn’t get any cheesier than Michael Bolton…

Tim may lack a thing or two but it’s not self-awareness. He knows he can’t sing the BIG BOMBASTIC BALLADS. Unlike Siobhan…honey, stay away from the big notes – can’t hit ’em, can’t resist ’em.

  67. I’ll bet Crystal is doing the Jewel song!

It would be great if she or Siobhan performed Christina’s I Turn To You, call me cheesy, but that song is beautiful, powerful and inspiring. Brings back memories from my teenage days.

Lee will probably do anything by a rock band, like Train, Goo Goo Dolls or Incubus which of course will help him get more fans.

Aaron is an easy one, as we know he’ll probably sing something from a previous idol.

  68. Performances most likely to lead to people turning off their TVs and swearing never to watch American Idol sober again:

Tim Urban: I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
Aaron Kelly: Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
Michael Lynche: I’ve Had The Time Of My Life – Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes

  69. How about Siobhan doing “Don’t Dream It’s Over” acoustic ala Sixpence None The Richer? If she doesn’t play guitar, she could just sing with someone playing with her. It could be a moment for her.

  70. I think Tim will do “Go The Distance” since it doesn’t get any cheesier than Michael Bolton…

That would take more than a three note range, so thats out!

  71. I love Don’t Dream It’s Over and a couple of others, but there’s a lot of excrement on that list. I hope Timmeh does one of the duets with himself.

Couldn’t they have shelled out the bucks for some U2 songs or something? Maybe Arcade Fire’s Wake Up? Something other than songs from bad 80s movies and Dream Weaver?

  72. I’d love to hear someone sing “Wind Beneath My Wings”…loved the Bette Midler version. Wonder who it would fit?

  73. Tim may lack a thing or two but it’s not self-awareness. He knows he can’t sing the BIG BOMBASTIC BALLADS.

Hum, Apologize? Under my thumb? Sweet Love? The guy has showed that he can be clueless when it comes to song choice.

  74. Maybe Arcade Fire’s Wake Up?

Aahh…that song is too damn good for Idol. Don’t get me wrong, I love the show, but there is no way Ricky Minor and the backup singers would do it justice!

  75. Hum, Apologize? Under my thumb? Sweet Love? The guy has showed that he can be clueless when it comes to song choice.

LOL. We don’t know Timmeh’s master plan. He is giggling like Dr. Evil right now.

ETA: For the love of anything holy, please JUST SAY NO TO CREED. Everyone.

  76. The guy has showed that he can be clueless when it comes to song choice.

Sweet Love is the closest to a Bombastic ballad out of that group and I thought he did okay with it. And if we are crucifying people for song choice, 90% of this group is in trouble. Song choice is what’s killing them overall.

  77. How about Siobhan doing “Don’t Dream It’s Over” acoustic ala Sixpence None The Richer? If she doesn’t play guitar, she could just sing with someone playing with her. It could be a moment for her.

Great suggestion! Tweet it to her! That also happens to be one of my favorite songs of all time.

  78. I know maybe half a dozen songs on this list. I suck.
I wonder if someone will pick Up where You Belong. Seems like it’s something Crystal would pick (if she stays in her style).

Surprised to see Don’t Dream It’s Over by Crowded House in there. I guess they pick the songs for the lyrics more than the style?

  79. LOL. We don’t know Timmeh’s master plan. He is giggling like Dr. Evil right now.

    It’s Timmeh’s world…we just live in it :)

  80. IDK – I’m looking at this list of songs and seeing a serious amount of cheese. Next week could be rough.

  81. Wow, what a cheesy bunch of songs to choose from. Debby Boone’s ‘You Light Up My Life’. Gag!

  82. O. M. F. G. Can someone please do the song from Hair? Or My Heart Will Go On. I’ll accept either.

  83. I think Tim will do “Go The Distance” since it doesn’t get any cheesier than Michael Bolton…

I think he’ll do it because as the Hercules “zero to hero” contestant it’s his frickin’ anthem! It’ll be perfect!

  84. One not-so-encouraging note: According to the review averages at WhatNotToSing, no fewer than 3 of the contestants had their worst performance of the entire season the last time “Inspirational Songs (Idol Gives Back)” week happened (Season 7). Somehow, all of them survived and Michael Johns got eliminated instead.

  85. Sweet Love is the closest to a Bombastic ballad out of that group and I thought he did okay with it. And if we are crucifying people for song choice, 90% of this group is in trouble. Song choice is what’s killing them overall.

You thought he did ok with Sweet love? Well in that case, Tim can do anything he wants with fans like you, great for him.

I actually think there are several good choices for him on that list and several terrible ones, the only contestant that I have a hard time choosing for is big Mike.

  86. ETA: For the love of anything holy, please JUST SAY NO TO CREED. Everyone.

I am worried Lee will do it. He did already do Owl City and freakin’ HINDER after all. :)

  87. According to the review averages at WhatNotToSing, no fewer than 3 of the contestants had their worst performance of the entire season the last time “Inspirational Songs (Idol Gives Back)” week happened (Season 7).

Wasn’t it Carly and David Cook at the bottom on their rankings?

  88. I spent more time on this than most of them deserve, but just for fun I thought I’d see if any of these turn out to be true:

CRYSTAL – Holding Out for a Hero (Bonnie Tyler)
    LEE – Higher (Creed)
    SIOBHAN – BOTW (S & G)
CASEY – It’s My Life (Bon Jovi)
    TIM – The Boxer (S & G)
MIKE – That’s The Way God Planned It (Billy Preston)
    AARON – OTR (Judy Garland)

    Okay, take your shots!!!

  89. According to the review averages at WhatNotToSing, no fewer than 3 of the contestants had their worst performance of the entire season the last time “Inspirational Songs (Idol Gives Back)” week happened (Season 7). Somehow, all of them survived and Michael Johns got eliminated instead.

Well, not everyone agrees with consensus (if WNTS is actually consensus). Some of us thought MJ blew on “Dream On” and deserved to go home. I sure didn’t cry in my Cheerios.

    CREED. Everyone.

I am worried Lee will do it. He did already do Owl City and freakin’ HINDER after all. :)

That’s a huge reason I cannot warm up to Lee. I know the bullshit he will put out later.

  90. AAAAHHHHH no Creed please. Seriously, there’s a group on facebook called “Even Jesus Hates Creed.”

  91. Ugh. Way way way WAY too many ballads. It’s gonna be another snoozefest. Hope they choose outside of this list.

  92. What I think everyone should sing

Crystal: I’ll Stand by You by the Pretenders

Casey: I hope you Dance by Leann Womack

    Aaron: Anyway by Martina Mcbride

Siobhan: Holding out For a Hero by Bonnie Tyler

    Mike: Hands by Jewel

Lee: Don’t Dream its Over by Crowded House

Tim: I don’t give a fuck. Whatever it is it will suck

  93. Hey some actual good relatively current songs on this list, mixed in among the usual cheesy dreck.

Please everyone stay away from ANYTHING sung by Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Debby Boone, Bette Midler or Barbra Strisand. WAY too much cheese and/or bombast in most of those songs Oh an — or anything by Creed (Lee, I’m looking at you on that last one, dude)

And LOL at the coronation songs! Yikes — somehow I doubt anyone will pick any of those. Or LLWD, which is too damn difficult to sing (Kris is great at it, but he’s got a lot of practice!)

I’d love anyone who sings Drive by Incubus or World by Five for Fighting or Don’t Dream It’s Over by Crowded House — love those songs!

  94. Mike: Hands by Jewel

Heh. That’d be funny to hear Big Mike singing, “my hands are small I know…”

  95. Magic rainbows is on the list and NoBo isn’t? Darn. Lol

Yes, because Magic Rainbows is the greatest coronation song that ever LIVED! Heh. Please Timmy, honor the Rainbow. I still own my GoPhone. I will power-vote for you.

  96. And too bad they didn’t have IGB last season. I could totally see Kris doing a killer cover of Switchfoot (he loves that band) and Adam lighting up the stage with the Bowie or Queen song, for instance

PS – I’d also love to hear someone cover The Boxer — that’s my all-time favorite Simon & Garfunkel song

  97. See the reason they didn’t put NoBo on there is because TPTB are obviously trying to persuade Kris to come back on Idol to perform the reggae version of that he told Jim C about right before the Kradison concert…

  98. Danny did My Wish and Matt did So Small in S8– so I’m betting Aaron will pick one of those, following in his tradition of picking songs already covered on Idol…

  99. i hope lee goes for goo goo dolls. i would flove that

also i hope someone does world by five for fighting

  100. See the reason they didn’t put NoBo on there is because TPTB are obviously trying to persuade Kris to come back on Idol to perform the reggae version of that he told Jim C about right before the Kradison concert…

    ROFL

  101. Casey: I hope you Dance by Leann Womack

I’m not ready for Casey to leave yet.

  102. Tim: I don’t give a fuck. Whatever it is it will suck

Oooh, I don’t know that song. Can you hum a few bars?

  103. Oooh, I don’t know that song. Can you hum a few bars?

Sorry, I can’t hum it, but I can describe it. It’s a monotonous funeral dirge sung the entire time in B-flat, while flashing your shit eating grin the whole time.

  104. The Boxer could be a good choice for Crystal or Casey. I think both could bring something fresh to it. Maybe even Lee. He could show something different if he could actually have an original take on a song.

  105. tierbee:
I can’t get over “Dream Weaver.” Hee

Ha! I’d pee my pants for laughing so hard if someone chose that song! PLEASE, someone choose that song!!

  106. I wonder if someone will pick Up where You Belong. Seems like it’s something Crystal would pick (if she stays in her style).

Seriously? I don’t see this as her style at all.

Where’s “Innocent” on this list? LOL. I love DC’s studio version.

Wow, this list truly is limited. I can’t believe some of the cheese. I hope some of them choose off the list. I’m going to have to check some of these out.

ETa: Please nobody sing i hope you will dance, wind beneath my wings, Love lift us up where we belong…and many, many others.

  107. girlygirl said: PS – I’d also love to hear someone cover The Boxer — that’s my all-time favorite Simon & Garfunkel song

According the behind-the-scenes LA Times article from Monday Lee was singing “The Boxer” with Andrew and a vocal coach backstage. Perhaps we can hope he’ll pick it? — I’m mostly just hoping Lee stays away from Creed and the Chad Kroeger song.

  108. The masochist in me wants to see/hear LLWD next week. :P And I say that as a Kris fan.

Lee is sooo doing the Creed song. Or “I Will Survive” as a post-break up of his Andrew bromance. LOL.

ETA: I just laughed at the thought of “The Prayer” being done on AI, just because of the Italian verses (and possible attempts to do both the guy and girl verses).

  109. Up Where You Belong has a Roots/Folk feel to it. I’m thinking here of Buffy Ste-Marie, who co-wrote the song. A folk singer, in the same vein as Joan Baez, and I see Crystal very much like that.

  110. Up Where You Belong has a Roots/Folk feel to it, I think.

Joe Cocker’s voice is raspy, but I think the lyrics are too cheesy for the roots type. Too cheesy for Crystal, imo, ymmv.

“Simple Man” by Lynard Skynard (sp?) and covered by Shinedown would be a great song for Casey, imo. Probably not what the judges are looking for though. But, to me it’s inspirational because having a son, these are things I want to teach him.

  111. Actually, I think YoutubeAndrew could have done something very pretty with “The Prayer.”

  112. MJ, do you know how they are doing the eliminations this year? They aren’t just skipping them (like season 6), are they?

  113. am doomed to disappointment, because now I can’t get past Timmeh singing LLWD…reggae.

    sigh.

Thanks “inspirational” songs for giving me a dream…then crushing it.

This made me laugh, now I will disappointed if it doesn’t happen as well!XD

  114. Live Like We’re Dying is on the list!!!

I can’t imagine anyone picking it, but Crystal, Lee, Casey would do an excellent job with it.

  115. ETA: I just laughed at the thought of “The Prayer” being done on AI, just because of the Italian verses (and possible attempts to do both the guy and girl verses).

Adam has a youtube performance out there of The Prayer. It is beautiful. I think that song is completely out of the question for ANYONE this year.
Maybe Timmy could attempt it. Nah, he’s too smart!

  116. Sorry, I can’t hum it, but I can describe it. It’s a monotonous funeral dirge sung the entire time in B-flat, while flashing your shit eating grin the whole time.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!! I cannot stop laughing, headed for hiccups. OMG that is funny.

  117. LOL. We don’t know Timmeh’s master plan. He is giggling like Dr. Evil right now.

    It’s Timmeh’s world…we just live in it

LOL! I think I now have a full blown laughing jag going on.

    Thanks All, I needed this..LOL.

  118. Sorry, I can’t hum it, but I can describe it. It’s a monotonous funeral dirge sung the entire time in B-flat, while flashing your shit eating grin the whole time.

LOL! That funeral dirge is keeping little Timmy in week after week though. He’s got to be one of the smartest contestants that has been on the show in a while. Simon was right when he stated that it didn’t really matter what they said. It really doesn’t.

I’ve started to take great delight in this whole Timmy fiasco the past couple of weeks. It really is one of the only interesting things about the show this year. Each week I want to see what trick or game little Timmy will come up with.

I don’t care if he stays or goes, but it is fun to watch.

  119. Timmy may not be the best vocalist, but he is able to make the most of what he’s got, and this week he showed talent and musicality.

  120. It would be wicked cool for Siobhan to sing “I Am Changing” by Jennifer Hudson. She needs another moment to get back to the game. With all honesty, I think that she’s the only legitimate threat to Simon’s anointed one. Not that I’m saying Lee and Casey aren’t good, I just don’t see them as an Idol material: who, like, Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, and Fantasia, have the personality to match with the vocals.

Admit it or not, Siobhan has mad vocals. People who say she sings nasally and screams a lot are probably fans of Crystal who just can’t accept the fact that she might win against her. (I said might because with the way Simon and Kara pimps Crystal even though she missed the notes and botched some lyrics, she will sail through to the Finale no matter what.)

The only problem with Siobhan singing “I Am Changing” is that it would contradict how she portrays herself as someone who would not change herself in the competition.

  121. There’s an Enigma song on there?! That’s like… sex music!

This made me laugh, but I’ll skip the reason why!

I would love for someone to do this song, just because it would be so bizarre. I wasn’t sure how New Age music would translate to a stage, but just found an acoustic cover of it and can see it being kinda beautiful if done right.

  122. ETA: I just laughed at the thought of “The Prayer” being done on AI, just because of the Italian verses (and possible attempts to do both the guy and girl verses).

“The Prayer” was done on Australian Idol a few Years ago by Anthony Callea who ended up being Runner up. It was his defining moment of the season . He was Italian though & so could authentically sing this.I don’t think anyone has the style of voice to do this this season though or Living On a Prayer either!!

  123. There’s an Enigma song on there?! That’s like… sex music!

I would love for someone to do this song, just because it would be so bizarre. I wasn’t sure how New Age music would translate to a stage, but just found an acoustic cover of it and can see it being kinda beautiful if done right.

The version by acoustic box? It would be hilarious to see someone singing aboriginal chants on the show. But, I could see it being a lot less cheesy than some of these other songs.

  124. Timmy may not be the best vocalist, but he is able to make the most of what he’s got, and this week he showed talent and musicality.

I totally agree- he knows what suits his voice. If he had a few singing lessons he would be really good – so that he would then have the control he needs!1

  125. I could see Siobhan doing beautiful. She’s the only one left with the control to tackle this song. It could be a moment for her, and it probably speaks volumes to her at it’s message.. I also like the option of the “its my life” by bon jovi and the queen track that’s included… My bet is on beautiful. This time of the competition you want as many people as possible to related to you, and the whole nose piercing etc… all relates to christina and perhaps the katie jumpers will attach themselves. as few as there were lol

  126. Tim Urban: I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
Aaron Kelly: Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
Michael Lynche: I’ve Had The Time Of My Life – Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes

If Aaron sings Livin on a Prayer he´ll go home for sure! It´s so hard to sing! Jordin had a hard time singing it andshe was mentor by Bon jovi himself!

Side note; they could bring Adam back and he could do the Bowie song? hahaha Sorry MJ

  127. If Aaron sings Livin on a Prayer he´ll go home for sure!

I think that TPTB wants him to go home now, so there is a big chance that he’ll get an unsuitable song again.

  128. Livin on a prayer -bon jovi version, yup it’s hard to sing…
but… Livin on a prayer – david cook version, i’ll think it will be easy, it a slow version. but correct me if im wrong, did bon jovi have the slow version as well? ETA: sorry, i mean acoustic version. not entirely slow.

sorry, i’m 21 and i’ll confess that i didn’t know Livin on a prayer until i heard it from david, then when i heard the bon jovi version, i was suprised that it was a rock version and more up tempo…

  129. nyanyanie, I don’t think that Livin’ On A Prayer David Cook version is easy to pull off. David makes it look effortless because he is a wonderful singer, but I can’t imagine anyone, let alone Aaron, doing anything great with it.

  130. i guess you’re right springboard, i was just thinking, they could possibly do that version. but i don’t think anyone could pull off the emotion he placed on that song.

it will actually break my heart if someone picks it, bon jovi or dc version.

  131. “The Prayer” was done on Australian Idol a few Years ago by Anthony Callea who ended up being Runner up. It was his defining moment of the season . He was Italian though & so could authentically sing this.I don’t think anyone has the style of voice to do this this season though or Living On a Prayer either!!

With respect, being of Italian ethnicity had nothing to do with him being able to sing it “authentically”. Anthony Callea simply has a great voice and great range. He’s the first to admit that he doesn’t really speak Italian other than a few phrases and words.

I agree that no one in this season has the vocal range to tackle this song.

  132. if only we have a regular result show next week..
it will be fun if they do a medley of the idol coronation songs… teehee… :)

  133. I can so see Aaron trying to tackle My Wish by Rascal Flatts. He hasn’t done a country song in a while and he has said that RF is one of his favorites. I’ll have to get back to this to give ideas for the others.

ETA: I can kinda see Casey doing Tim McGraws Live Like You Were Dying.

OK…gonna take a look at the list and try to come up with other suggestions.

  134. One of Lee’s inspirations/favorites is Simon & Garfunkel. I think he may go with one of the two on the list – Bridge over Troubled Water or The Boxer. I read that he was singing the Boxer (starting a sing along) while they were in Vegas. I’d put money on him singing one of these two songs.

  135. Lee- Hero or Calling All Angels

Siobhan- My Heart Will Go On or I Am Changing

    Aaron- My Wish or Anyway

Crystal- People Get Ready or Hands

    Casey- It’s My Life

Tim- What The World needs Now Is Love

Mike- this is tough, there’s so many songs I can hear him singing. I’m gonna go with You Raise Me Up.

Actually Bon Jovi DID the acoustic version back in 89 at the MTV Music Awards. Some people say that this performance gave MTV the idea for the unplugged series.

  137. I can hear Mike singing Greatest Love of All. That song was originally recorded by George Benson for a Ali documentary in the 1970’s. Whitney’s version is better known, but Benson’s version is pretty damn good too.

  138. Tim should ask 19E to clear Kris Allen’s “I Need To Know” for him. He could kill with that song.

  139. Ok, I gotta admit, I know it sucks for me to say this, and I’m probably going to hell and all that, but I always HATE IGB week. I was happy they didn’t have one last year. The whole “inspirational songs” thing, IDK. Those songs mostly suck, are so saccharine and boring, and ALL ballads (sigh).

Sooo not looking forward to next week! (in fact, after epicness of this week, may find it increasingly hard to watch ANY of the rest of the season, well except for the lol factor)

  140. Ok, I gotta admit, I know it sucks for me to say this, and I’m probably going to hell and all that, but I always HATE IGB week.

You have no idea how delighted I am that you said that first! I can’t and never could get on the IGB bandwagon; it has always struck me as self-serving. I s’pose it may do some good, but the mega-sponsors fail to throw enough money the charity’s way to suit me. I give elsewhere. On purpose.

The songs are also punk. If I know all the titles (and I pretty much do), that means they are seriously stale. Yep, I generally skip the IGB show. Idol doesn’t do empathy or sweet believably. They offend me and I’m not entirely sure why.

  141. Lee – Drive
    Siobhan – The Impossible Dream
    Aaron – Don’t Dream It’s Over
Crystal – Holding Out for a Hero
Casey – The River of Dreams
Tim – Show Me What I’m Looking For
Mike – The Time of My Life

  142. Admit it or not, Siobhan has mad vocals. People who say she sings nasally and screams a lot are probably fans of Crystal who just can’t accept the fact that she might win against her.

At this point, there’s not a chance in hell Siobhan will win this thing.

(I said might because with the way Simon and Kara pimps Crystal even though she missed the notes and botched some lyrics, she will sail through to the Finale no matter what.)

Crystal will “sail through to the Finale” (providing her fan base doesn’t get lazy and continues to vote each and every week) for one reason … she’s The Best. And throwing stones at Crystal for a missed note on rare occasion, is not wise when comparing her to Siobhan. Meaning, people who live in glass houses should not be throwing stones at others.

Lyrics (if she actually botched some in your mind) are generally altered due to the time allowed each contestant to complete a portion of the song. This has happened throughout the history of AI by a great number of contestants. Are you so sure Siobhan hasn’t done this?

The only problem with Siobhan singing “I Am Changing” is that it would contradict how she portrays herself as someone who would not change herself in the competition.

Brilliant deduction! Siobhan’s unwillingness to change (despite the repeated strong constructive suggestions of both Simon and Kara) is one of the reasons she won’t win and probably won’t have much of a career either until she does.

  143. Tim should ask 19E to clear Kris Allen’s “I Need To Know” for him. He could kill with that song.

I can’t imagine Tim killing anything (maybe the cynicism of people like me who don’t like rainbows). But while we’re on the subject of awesome and inspirational Kris Allen songs, I think “Lifetime” or “Let it Rain” would be better fits for Tim. He could sincerely sing “it takes a lifetime to learn how to sing, to find your place in the world symphony.” Similarly, with “Let it Rain,” there would be sincerity with “so many people ((Kara, etc.) trying to keep me, so many voices trying to reach me, tell me that this is not the way, tell me that this is my mistake…oh let the rain keep falling down, because it won’t stop me from getting where I’m bound.”

    I’m down.

  144. but correct me if im wrong, did bon jovi have the slow version as well? ETA: sorry, i mean acoustic version. not entirely slow.

I have a version of it called “Prayer 94” on my iPod that I was just listening to and it’s the slowed down acoustic-y version. I don’t think Tim has the range to do it like David Cook did. There are some vocal-stretching moments, however quiet and subtle, and Tim definitely doesn’t have David’s range.

r/e “The Prayer,” I don’t think most people are aware that Adam has a version of it on YouTube so I doubt that someone attempting it because Adam did is a big deal *but* it really is a song that lends itself beautifully to a duet so unless someone *really* wants to duet with a backup singer :) it would take some real creativity to pull it off. Which means… these folks shouldn’t do it.

I would enjoy Lee singing “The Boxer” I think. He should really, really avoid Creed. And “Hero” is also a duet song and makes me think of the Davids for S7 finale, though if folks didn’t watch S7 finale they wouldn’t know that.

If someone does “Dream Weaver” I, too, will probably wet my pants laughing. They need groovy green lights during their performance, though.

I’d kinda like to see Siobhan tackle “Anyway” if she could get her vocals together. She doesn’t have to sing it as country as Martina does but it is a big song with big notes. Granted, there’s always the inevitable comparison to Martina when you sing a Martina song and her vocals are incredible (don’t know where all that voice comes from in that teeny little lady).

“You’ve Got a Friend” is such a pretty song (I love Carole King, LOVE) but it would be hard to make it non-sleepy.

I still want someone to sing “Better Days.” I forgot how much I like that song, heh. I think it’s wise to avoid Bette Midler/Celine Dion/Whitney Houston/Josh Groban… it’s really tough to not just be completely karaoke with them and they all have such huge voices.

Ooh, I do like that Carolina Liar song, too.

There are some good songs in here that the Idolettes could do well with but it’s a minefield.

  145. Tim should ask 19E to clear Kris Allen’s “I Need To Know” for him. He could kill with that song.

Just NO! I would probably have to shoot my TV if that happened.

  146. That seems like a very short list. The producers don’t have much imagination. Why not let the contestants pick their own “inspirational” songs? It doesn’t have to be so sentimental to be inspirational.

  147. I want someone to do LLWD. And if there’s someone who can do it, I’d say Crystal.

THAT is our top 7. Yikes.

I don’t think it’s a terrible top 7. Still think Didi should’ve been there instead of Tim, and maybe Katelyn, Alex, Tyler, and Lilly should be there. But, based on who the top 12 was, it got at least 6 right IMO.

I don’t know a lot of these songs, but based on some previews, here’s what I’d think would happen (I haven’t previewed every single song, but here’s what I can see working)

Crystal – Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher), LLWD, You’ve Got A Friend, People Get Ready, or Walking on Sunshine. The first song has a lot of soul and is upbeat, Crystal could kill with it. However, I wanna see her do a ballad this week. I dunno which one, though.

Lee – I can kinda picture him doing the first three songs I picked for Crystal, plus Bridge over Troubled Waters or The Boxer because he likes S&G. I don’t really know either song’s melody off the top of my head, but The Boxer would be interesting to see.

Aaron – I can see him picking Rascal Flatts (and maybe he should, he should go back to country). Or he could do something that could be disastrous and choose My Heart Will Go On.

Siobhan – She’s making a comeback this week with either a “love-it-or-hate-it” performance of Livin’ On A Prayer or her take on My Heart Will Go On. Or Mary J. Blige’s Stronger, or Bon Jovi’s It’s My Life. I think she has to do something “meaty” like Think, bring it back to the awesome WTF factor Siobhan she was a while back.

Casey – Maybe You’ve Got A Friend. I think he can twist it.

Michael – Hmm…… Not sure. He’s probably gonna pick I Believe I Can Fly.

Tim – Rainbow by Sugar Ray seems to fit him >_>.

I’m not sure at all on some of these.

I’m also hoping someone does LLWD. Someone other than Tim or Michael (Not that I don’t like them, I just see the other 5 tackling the song better…. Well, maybe not Siobhan or Aaron, but they’d be better at tackling it than the other two, IMO)

  148. Those songs suck.

I can’t even get up the energy to make suggestions.

The only thing I’m looking forward too is Alicia Keys mentoring.

    Boo.

  149. Crystal – I don’t care, she’ll geetar blues it up whatever it is.

Siobhan – I don’t care, she’ll butcher the low notes and hit a wow note whatever it is.

Big Mike – I don’t care, he’ll act like he really means it whatever it is.

Lee – I don’t care, he’ll rasp a little off key and look scared whatever it is.

Casey – I don’t care, he’ll look purdy and sound goaty whatever it is.

Aaron – I really don’t care bless his heart.

Tim – I really don’t care cause most inspirational songs are too big for his range whatever it is.

  150. THAT is our top 7. Yikes.

This top 7 is pretty much right on. With the exception of Alex Lambert who should have had Tim’s spot I think we could have predicted this at the get go. As long as they don’t start treating Tim like a buffoon(ie Jason, Sanjaya) I don’t mind him being there. I think the biggest surprise of the season will be Tim lasting longer than Siobhan.

  151. As someone who was never a fan of IGB weeks, I think one of my all time fav IGB performances (or at least the only one I can remember, lol) was Michael Johns singing Dream On, in part because it was so NOT an actual inspirational song.

    So, go figure ;-)

  152. I don’t think it’s a terrible top 7. Still think Didi should’ve been there instead of Tim, and maybe Katelyn, Alex, Tyler, and Lilly should be there. But, based on who the top 12 was, it got at least 6 right IMO.

Yeah, the top 7 we have is about as good as it could be, considering this bunch. Andrew going was a great help, though Katie should have stayed over Aaron, or even Siobhan (Tim is seriously in it to win it at this point, lol). Casey, Crystal, and Lee are all top 3 contenders, and Big Mike has great vocals (the best male singer in the competition by a mile), but he’ll probably be gone in a week or so.

  153. I agree this is a good top 7 considering who we started the finals with. The only one missing is Didi. I’d swap her for Aaron and it would be all good.

At this point it is hard to see anyone other than Crystal, Casey or Lee winning… with an outside shot for Siobhan, but only if she has a moment really soon, like this week, and stays good from there on out. As long as the last 2 standing come from that group then I can’t really complain.

I could see one of them not making top 4 though, with Tim or Mike taking their place.

  154. Did AI blow all of its song money this season on funding Adam’s laser show and Diddy’s strobe lights and…?

Looks like next week is gonna be a snoozefest. Just the opposite of what the show really needs right now. AI needs a major infusion of nonstop, blow-em-away energy from all seven “singers.” How can that possibly happen with this sleepy ol’ song list?

  155. Brilliant deduction! Siobhan’s unwillingness to change (despite the repeated strong constructive suggestions of both Simon and Kara) is one of the reasons she won’t win and probably won’t have much of a career either until she does.

I take issue with this statement. Ryan specifically asked Simon how Siobhan should sing after he gave his latest stinging critique. This gave Simon a real opportunity to say something honest, serious, real, legitimate. So how did he respond? He said that it was Elvis week and you have to choose the right song! Hello! How on earth could anyone interpret that as constructive criticism? Simon had the chance and he opted out. He did it, because he has precisely NO constructive criticism for Siobhan. He wants her out and the sooner the better. She is the one person who has the voice to possibly threaten Crystal. I personally do not see Siobhan winning this competition, but with a voice like hers, there is still the possibility that she could give another brilliant performance and get some real momentum.

What about Kara’s efforts at constructive criticism? Let’s see – we had “I’m confused” last week and “I don’t get it” this week. I am wondering what Siobhan is supposed to take from those comments. What they did was send a negative message loud and clear to the viewing audience. Simon speaks in code words and has the power to influence many people who watch the show. They are sending signals that they don’t like Siobhan and neither should the audience.

Siobhan does change! That is what is hurting her. She doesn’t want to be put in a category or a neat little box. She is exploring her potential and trying different things. For that she has been blasted. How dare anyone try to sound unique, different or out of the box? Blasphemy! I know what Siobhan was trying to do in her performance this week. It was ambitious and risky. Many singers start a song slowly or softly or in one tempo and then build to a big crescendo. Maybe Siobhan thought that it might be better to not go full out power with screams, not pull back so soft and restrained, but try to mix it up a little. It wasn’t two different songs, it was one admirable attempt to inject some real challenge and difficulty. I applaud her efforts. She will never get any sound advice from Simon, because he sees her as a threat. Simon and Kara will continue to sabotage Siobhan in any way possible.

My advice to Siohban would be, take a page out of Tim’s book. The guy was smart enough to laugh in the face of stinging commments from the judges, who put him in the top 24 in the first place. He let it all roll off his back and made smart song choices, worked well within the very real limits of his voice and kept on smiling. I say forget the judges! Concentrate on choosing the best song, give the performance of your young life, connect with the audience in the theater and at home and let whatever the judges say go in one ear and out the other. Pretend they aren’t there. Being angry at them will only use valuable energy.

Having said all this, I am expecting a Crystal/Lee finale. I happen to like both of them and think they are enormously talented, along with Mike. It should be very entertaining and enjoyable. I love Siobhan and hope she stays in as long as possible, so she can have the chance for great career opportunities. She has the voice and no one can take that away from her. With some work and adding good vocal technical skills, she could be quite extraordinary. So enjoy the Idol journey, make the most out of it and the hell with the judges!

  156. That seems like a very short list.

Short. And, can you say “trite” and “hackneyed”?

Amen to your excellent suggestion that they let the contestants decide which songs are inspirational to *them.* …. Then you could do nice video pieces on that choice.

Of course, given the way things are going this season, they’d probably all pick songs from this list — and the most well know (read: overdone) ones at that. Whataya gonna do?

  157. And throwing stones at Crystal for a missed note on rare occasion, is not wise when comparing her to Siobhan.

Lyrics (if she actually botched some in your mind) are generally altered due to the time allowed each contestant to complete a portion of the song. This has happened throughout the history of AI by a great number of contestants

Aren’t they given the same amount of time to prepare? No, Siobhan hasn’t botched any lyrics yet. Provided that she missed some notes, she was given a fair amount of criticism for that. But to not call out someone who butchered the lyrics of “Come Together”, and to not criticize someone who missed her notes when she’s wailing, like Crystal, is totally unwarranted.

I just take it as a complement thinking that Simon and Kara put Siobhan on a higher standard with their criticisms. I am not saying that Crystal is not a good singer, she’s actually really good, given that she’s also older than Siobhan which gives her a lot of experience. I just hope she breaks out of her box and be more daring and take more risks. The reason why they have theme nights is what Kelly Clarkson called artist development, it doesn’t help at all hearing them all the same every week, which Crystal, apparently has been since Top 24 week.

  158. Inspirational songs could be very good for Shiobhan. If I were to give her advice, I would say take the part of yourself that wants to scream an entire song and ask it what else it could do to express itself. I would say please leave the other part of yourself that wants to slow things down home for a week. Sleepy and Screamy in such short song clips is what is giving you the two voice comments from Kara. The judges have said they like the screamy Shiobhan but understand that they don’t mean that literally. They like the part of your personality that wants to go there–

  159. I can’t wait for IGB
I FLOVE this theme;best theme in a long time IMHO.Besides some CURRENT songs on the list!
    Really good iTunes choices
I bet someone sings hero , and I’ll stand by u
someone could hve a breakout moment with livin on a prayer(best song ever)
    I bet Siobhan does Queen

  160. I would really love to hear Casey sing, “I Hope You Dance” or “So Small” or “Live Like You’re Dying”. Obviously, I like the country inspirational songs. I’m mad that “I Believe” by Brooks and Dunn was left off, because it makes me cry like a baby. “Anyway” has almost the same effect on me, though. Instead of grinning his way through a song, I want Casey to tap back into emotions again.
Crystal could do a great version of “People Get Ready” or “Everyday People” — I guess I love doing the R&B thing.

  161. As someone who was never a fan of IGB weeks, I think one of my all time fav IGB performances (or at least the only one I can remember, lol) was Michael Johns singing Dream On, in part because it was so NOT an actual inspirational song.

    So, go figure ;-)

Yes he did a song that was Inspirational to him & he is still living his dream !! Just because a song is not on their list -doesn’t mean its not inspirational. BTW – this was the first actual Aerosmith song that was allowed to be sung on idol [ IDWTMAT – was a Dianne Warren song] – so it was a big deal to Michael- & he got eliminated for it. His versions of this on tour was great!!

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion but I don’t find songs like Living on a Prayer, Don’t Dream its over [ brilliant Aussie song by Crowded House] You’re My Best Friend,Live Like You’re Dying etc as boring. Just because they don’t have swearing or sexual connotations – doesn’t mean they are “cheesy[ hate that word] & boring – they are mostly about hope & positive relationships & something to strive for – which I think we need to hear more of these days!!
Its mostly about what the idols do with these songs that is the important thing!!

  162. Wow that’s a bad picture of the kids…Casey looks waaay taller than everyone else, and apparently they attacked his hair with a straightener or something…looks weird.
    Lee’s not smiling at all.
Siobhan is mostly hidden behind Tim.
And Crystal looks so strange all hunched down like that.

As for what they should sing?
I’d love for Lee to do Better Days. Calling All Angels could be good for him too, but they might label it as “corny”.
I can see Crystal doing Changes because of the whole David Bowie discussion way back in the semis.
Tim Urban should do something with love in the title. lol.

As much as I really, really, really DESPISE Idol Gives Back with a passion, this is actually not a terrible list of songs. There’s something on here that would work for just about everyone (except for Siobhan…does anything work for her these days?!) so I think they’ve all got a pretty good shot.
Alicia Keyes should be good as a mentor. I feel like she mentored in the past? Or am I thinking of someone else…

  163. Siobhan – you’ll never walk alone (with great glory note ending!) :D
Michael – go the distance (michael bolton)
Casey – up where we belong
Aaron – i hope you dance
Lee – i’ll stand by you
    Tim – amazing graze (acoustic)
    Crystal – people get ready

  164. Siobhan should totally do Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher). Its a great song and it might wake me up from some of the more sleep inducing numbers on this list. I don’t really see anyone else left but her taking it on (it doesn’t seem to me that it is quite Crystal’s vibe, although she could surprise me).

  165. This is going to be a cheesy mess, isn’t it?

It’s funny how most of the songs commonly called “inspirational” are in fact some of the least inspirational, least connected to genuine emotion of them all.

  166. TIm should do Don’t Dream it’s Over, Drive or I Will Survive (Cake style). He should steer clear of the big ballads and the high notes.

  167. This is going to be a cheesy mess, isn’t it?

It’s funny how most of the songs commonly called “inspirational” are in fact some of the least inspirational, least connected to genuine emotion of them all.

There’s that word “cheesy” again . Have to say I totally disagree.
[ JMO though] From this list given – there are plenty of songs that would create emotion & connectedness to the song Crowded Houses”Don’t Dream Its Over & People Get Ready- for starters!! I get inspired by songs that have meaning [ which is really lacking today in a lot of the Top 40 songs- apart from some of the idol songs]
Now its up to the idols to get that emotion across to us!!

Here’s Michael Johns singing Don’t Dream Its Over
[ sorry the quality is not the best but you get the idea about the song] BTW Crowded House was one of the “inspirations ” for Michael as he was growing up.

  168. I would really like to hear Crystal do “You’ve Got a Friend.” I can hear Casey doing “Livin’ on a Prayer” and having fun with guitar riffs during his performance. Finally, Tim could do a nice simple version “What a Wonderful World.” That song require no vocal range. As for the others, I am not too interested in what they choose.

Oh for pete sake give us a break with your BS. Simon and Kara have been offering Siobhan constructive criticism from the very beginning of the competition stages. She has totally ignored it. Can’t speak for Kara, but having watched every episode of AI to date, beginning with season 1, I’ve learned that if the contestants don’t heed Simon’s advice he eventually quits offering it. At some point we all stop beating our heads against the wall. Siobhan quite obviously doesn’t want any advise, so be gone with ya.

Yes, she did alter the lyrics of “Come Together” slightly, but it hardly made a difference and this happens (and goes unnoticed by the judges and audience) often. Are you so positive that Siobhan has done this with any of her songs? Be very careful with your answer!

I just take it as a complement thinking that Simon and Kara put Siobhan on a higher standard with their criticisms.

That statement is a complete joke and shows your total lack of knowledge.

Crystal doesn’t need to take any risks. She’s so far out in front of her closest competitor that trying to be something she’s not wouldn’t be in her best interests. Wise up! And, again, “People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones at others”. Basically all Siobhan has done throughout this competition is sing off key and scream a few very pitchy and screechy high notes week after week. So how is that making a point for doing something different?

  170. As much as I hate “Up Where We Belong,” I can hear Casey singing it in my head and sounding pretty good doing it. I might be willing to sit through that.

But I really think he needs to do something up-tempo. It’s time to wail.

    (Studies list again)

    Ok, maybe not.

  171. Yeesh… This week could end up being a real train wreck. There are way too many sappy ballads to choose from, and the upbeat songs that are present really aren’t that great either. At least No Boundaries isn’t there… My picks are presented in what I think is the order of contestant standing, from the most safe to the least safe:

    1. Crystal Bowersox: As a fellow native Ohioan, I almost feel a sense of responsibility to recommend that Crystal do a Chrissie Hynde song if it’s on the list. However, she’s got to leave something for Siobhan to do, doesn’t she? Quite honestly, I think that Crystal could have an “Idol moment” with a lot of songs here, but one that sticks out to me is What a Wonderful World, particularly if she does something similar to Eva Cassidy’s version of it (by the way: if you’ve never heard of Eva Cassidy, I suggest that you watch some of her performances on YouTube; it almost feels as though Crystal is channeling her at times). I just hope that Crystal stays away from Jewel’s Hands, as that song is dreadfully cheesy.

    2. Lee DeWyze: Mr. DeWyze, please step away from the Creed! Seriously, it’s bad enough that Michelle Delamor had to do one of Scott Stapp’s douchebag anthems this season; if Lee dredges up Higher, I will travel to Hollywood just to punch him in the face. I’d probably also stay away from Living On a Prayer if I were Lee, if nothing else for the fact that it would take away a natural pick for him if the show is going to do it’s annual “Year You Were Born” week this season. Apparently, Lee is a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan, so I’d like to see what he can do with one of their songs, preferably The Boxer (it fits him a lot better than Bridge Over Troubled Water).

    3. Casey James: Oh, man. The pickings are admittedly pretty slim for Casey here, as there aren’t that many blues-rock tunes available. Like with Lee, I’d prefer that Casey stay away from Bon Jovi and Creed, as they’re just too clichéd for him to pick (I’d add that God-awful Chad Kroeger / Josey Scott tune from the Spider-Man soundtrack to that list as well). If I were Casey, I’d probably opt for a rock take on People Get Ready, or- if he wishes to avoid another ballad- Fleetwood Mac’s Don’t Stop (this would allow for some killer shredding).

    4. Tim Urban: If ever there was a week that catered to Tim’s strengths as a performer, this is it. There are a ton of songs on this list that are right in the Turbanator’s vocal wheelhouse (yes, he has one), and the whole “inspirational” theme fits him like a glove (if he has a future in music, it would definitely be as a Christian artist). This list is chock-full of songs that Tim can either play completely earnestly or with a winking, Jack Johnson-style take, as long as he doesn’t reach beyond his limitations. If I were Tim, I would pick something no less than 10 years old to show that I can fit into today’s pop music scene. To me, no song does that better than Carolina Liar’s Show Me What I’m Looking For (call me crazy, but the singer on that song even sounds a bit like Tim).

    5. Siobhan Magnus: I’m sad to say this, but Siobhan has entered the danger zone in this season and needs a show-stopper in the worst possible way. Unfortunately, there just aren’t many songs on this list that will 1.) achieve this without being sappy and 2.) fit her unique sensibility (maybe I’ve misjudged Siobhan, but I see her as more of a Joy Division type than an inspirational music type). Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think there’s anyone who would want to hear this girl screech her way through Céline, Debby Boone, or- worse- any of the Idol coronation songs. Likewise, while I definitely think the Pretenders are more Siobhan’s speed, I’m not sure that I’ll Stand By You can provide her with the “moment” that she needs right now. It’s time for this girl to either go big or go home, so why not go for Robbie Williams’ Angels. Yes, I know that she might risk raising the ire of both David Archuleta fans and- more importantly- Simon for choosing this song, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

    6. Michael Lynche: Like both Lee and Casey, Big Mike needs to avoid choosing a song that would be a cliché for him to sing. Fortunately for him, the selection of songs on this list is more to his liking than either of the two “rockers.” Michael definitely needs to avoid Flying Without Wings (as if he doesn’t get compared to Ruben already), and I Believe I Can Fly needs to be permanently purged from the Idol songbook. The camp junkie in me would like to see the big man tear in to I Will Survive (if not for the unintentional comedy alone), but I feel his best option is probably Bill Withers’ Lovely Day.

    7. Aaron Kelly: This one is the easiest pick of the bunch. Aaron desperately needs to stay the hell away from anything previous Idol contestants have done (part of the reason I picked Angels for Siobhan was to keep it away from this dude) and get back to contemporary country-pop music STAT. As unimaginative as it may be, I think Aaron needs to pick My Wish by Rascal Flatts. It may be the one song that can save him for another week (although I’m not sure that that’s a good thing).

  172. Alicia Key’s “Superwoman” should have been on the list of songs. Anyways, my picks for the contestants:

    Crystal Bowersox – Amazing Grace

Casey James – Living in America

Siobhan Magnus – Holding Out for a Hero (Acoustic)

    See the rest here

  173. sounds like rk349097 has some really strange tastes, lol. But I suppose only Crystal can sing a song that is so irrelevant because only she will get praised by Simon, and he will call it “a moment” that is “magic”. Crystal could fling poo at the audience from a bucket and Simon would praise her. And saying that Siobhan is in the danger zone and in desperate need of a show stopper? Well, the problem isn’t Siobhan as she’s actually one of the best there. The problem is Simon who’s bashing her to help fragile Crystal win. If he doesn’t praise her, she might just walk off… Let’s get real. Simon’s mistake was by taking a singer that most people think is good, and panning 8 out of 9 of her performances. That’s where he lost his credibility this time because at least someone people can see through it.

If Siobhan chooses a “show stopper”, it will get panned and she will be told she’s “screaming” even though if other artists do the same it is fine by Simon. If she leaves that out and sings something smooth, she will be told that it’s “too sleepy”. If she does something in the middle and power belts differently and lessens the “scream”, she will be told “she’s become a different person”. If you can’t see that’s what is happening and think her singing is actually poor, you’re tone deaf and relying on Simon to form your impressions. With the exception of her one off night, Siobhan sounds FANTASTIC! But yeah, she’s in desperate shape because the competition has it’s chosen winner already. Now if she were as bad as Tim, then she would be in great shape because all she’d need is a little improvement each week. Oddly enough Tim is not in trouble, but it’s not like Siobhan is a worse vocalist than Tim. So why should Siobhan be in trouble? You see? It’s fixed!

  174. Good God, I’m gonna need a cracker on Tuesday cause there’s gonna be a lot of cheese.

At least this week they can choose a song that fits them nicely instead of trying (in vain for the most part) to interpret Elvis.
I think Crystal will choose something that means something to her this week, and that might mean dedicating a song to her son. I’d like to hear her with You’re The Inspiration.
Tim Urban will sing something easy that will tug at the heartstrings of tween girls everywhere. I don’t know, maybe a dumbed down version of Your Love Keeps Lifting Me if he wants to stick to “Love” or We Are the Champions.
I really think Lee would sound good with Rainbow by Sugar Ray, and he should definitely stay away from the obvious Creed.
I’d put good money on Aaron singing Rascall Flatts, My Wish, but it would be more impressive for him to country-ify something like Go The Distance. I think he’ll go with the obvious choice though.
I’m really excited for Siobhan, but I hope she does one of her uptempo and “screamy” songs that made us love her to begin with. That will also contrast all the inevitable “sitting on my stool being deep”. Holding Out For a Hero or It’s My Life would both be perfect. Another idea is the Joey Ramone version of What a Wonderful World.
Michael Lynche. . . hmmm I don’t want him to repeat his last few performances but the theme is a minefield of cheese-flavored dynamite. Heaven Help Us All could be good if he tones it down. I think he’ll have the toughest time choosing a song for this week.
I’m not sure about Casey either. He could really rock Joey Ramone’s version of What a Wonderful World as well as Siobhan, or You’ve Got a Friend for something more soulful.

Contestants, stay away from past idol winners. That can only end in either otherworldly praise or total failure, and none of them really outclass the winners at this point, so my bet would be on total failure.

  175. I would love someone to sing The Prayer – I’m not sure who is really capable in that group to be honest – perhaps Big Mike? Someone sang it in Australian Idol a few years back and it caterpulted him to the Final, it was so inspiring. If someone wants one of Simon’s “Moments” that would be it.

  176. Some of these songs are ass.

I could totally picture Crystal singing Everyday People by Sly and the Family Stone. It would suit her to a T and it kinda sums up her attitude. People Get Ready would be good, too.

I agree with others–could definitely hear Siobhan singing Don’t Dream It’s Over.

Not sure about the others…Is Aaron Kelly doing You Lift Me Up too obvious?

  177. I’m trying to think outside the box. In order to gain momentum to push through the next few weeks, each idol needs to hit a homerun (or have a “moment,” as the judges like to say, which always makes me think of having a “movement,” but I digress…) this Tuesday. To hit a homerun, I think they need to do something unexpected.

Aaron: Aaron is cute, and I think he could be even cuter doing “That’s What Friends are For.”
Siobhan: The judges may not like it, but she could give a goose-bump-inducing performance with “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Simon might call it old-fashioned, however.
Tim: Tim is also cute, though I think his strong suit is his lower range. I’m giving this likable puppy the likable “Everyday People.”
Lee: Someone mentioned “The Boxer,” and I agree this would be perfect for him vocally and in terms of the lyrics.
Michael: Gosh, I don’t like Mike. Sigh, but he’s still here, so I’ll give him “Heaven Help Us All,” a really lovely and underrated Stevie Wonder tune.
Crystal: She, more than anyone else, needs to do something unexpected this week. I think she could do something with depth and grit: “Changes.”
Casey: Not a huge Casey fan, but I could see him giving “Aquarius” a rollicking, bluesy twist.

  178. sounds like rk349097 has some really strange tastes, lol. But I suppose only Crystal can sing a song that is so irrelevant because only she will get praised by Simon, and he will call it “a moment” that is “magic”. Crystal could fling poo at the audience from a bucket and Simon would praise her.

Wow, Zing. Talk about flinging poo….

I’d love to hear Crystal sing “People Get Ready.” I can also hear her singing “You’ve Got a Friend.” Of course, neither of those is a risky choice, but I’m not sure this is the week for the contestants to show off. This is about delivering a solid performance of a song that inspires.

  179. Aaron – He likes the ballads and they suit him best. He likes commercial country-pop and there are several choices on the list. “I Hope You Dance”, “My Wish” or even “Anyway”. He could also sing “Amazing Grace” with a bit of a twang.

Casey –My favorite performances of his have been “Jealous Guy” and “You’ll Think of Me” – both simply arranged, unplugged and achingly heartfelt. He’s shown his prowess with the guitar but I love when his voice is front and center. I hope he stays away from the electric this week and keeps it acoustic and simple. I like MJ’s idea for “I’ll Stand By You” very much. I’d also like an acoustic rock version of “People Get Ready”. As for country options he could choose “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw or even “Anyway” by Martina McBride done in his own style.

Crystal – Soul classics work for her voice and the obvious choice would be “People Get Ready” which I’m sure she’d do with her usual excellence (although Eva Cassidy’s version will always be my favorite by a female vocalist). She could also do justice to “Heaven Help Us All” by Stevie Wonder. How about something a little different such as “Drive” by Incubus?

Lee – Everything he sings sounds grungy or a combination of John Mayere mixed with Dave Mathews to me, and I think that’s what the PTB like about him. He has a marketable voice but if he’s carving out a rocker niche on the show, he should choose something like “Better Days” by the Goo Goo Dolls or “Higher” by Creed. He could dirty-up “Lifted” by Lighthouse Family or go acoustic with “You’ve Got a Friend”.

Mike – The R&B specialist should stay in his assigned box because it gives him a niche to himself. I can see him choosing “I Believe I Can Fly” or “Heaven Help Us All” or if he wants something a little more contemporary maybe a take on “Stronger” by Mary J Blige.

Siobhan – I loved her “Wicked Game” because she captured the haunting tone of the song and Chris Isaak’s original. I love “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (Sixpence None the Richer covered this nicely) and I think her voice would really do this justice. She’s probably the only contestant who could attempt “Bridge Over Troubled Water” which some consider to be Clay Aiken’s big moment, without a army of angry Claymates on the warpath.

Tim – His voice is relatively weak compared to most of the others but he’s shown he can be smart about choosing songs that work for him. “It’s a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong is a great song with a simple melody that can be sung in a variety of styles and sound good. Tim apparently likes the big band and swing and maybe he would like to tackle “The Impossible Dream” by Frank Sinatra. Throw in “I Can See Clearly Now” by Jimmy Cliff since he’s done the reggae thing before.

  180. crystal – from a distance – i see her stripping down the song
tim – only hope – switchfoot version
    lee – it’s my life
siobhan – go the distance – i’m hoping she won’t hold back and just belt the damn song
mike – i am changing – it’d be interesting to see a male perspective on the song
    aaron – calling all angels
casey – we are the champions – yeah…i went there.

  181. Where’s The Show Must Go On? I guess Carly had that removed from the list.

  182. Water_Sprite – I so agree with you that Tim should sing Kris Allen’s “Let It Rain.” “I’m gonna make it, don’t care what the skies say…” He could grin through the whole thing and it would fit with the song…
