dick clark productions and NBC today announced the finalists for the “2021 Billboard Music Awards” (BBMA), which honor the year’s most successful artists in 51 categories across all genres of music. The annual live broadcast showcases spectacular performances, unexpected collaborations, buzzworthy pop culture moments that keeps fans talking all year, and the prestigious ICON Award, which honors record-breaking artists and their impact on music. The BBMAs will broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 23 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC.
Interestingly, disgraced country artist (and The Voice alum) Morgan Wallen is nominated in 6 categories. However, dc productions released this statement:
Morgan Wallen is a finalist this year based on charting. As his recent conduct does not align with our core values, we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting).
No matter how hard the industry boycotts Morgan, country fans don’t care. They kept his album Dangerous: The Double Album a top the charts for more than 10 weeks. Billboard could have just left him off the nominations, though and explained why. It’s as if they feel obligated to mention his massive chart success. However, I predict by this time next year, Morgan will be back in the fold after paying his penance.
Elsewhere, Gabby Barrett is the 4th most nominated artist, with a WHOPPING NINE nominations!
Carrie Underwood (American Idol 4 winner) has four nominations including Top Country Female Artist; Top Country Album; Top Christian Album; Top Christian Artist.
Gabby Barrett (American Idol 16 2nd runner up) has nine noms, including, Top New Artist; Top Country Artist; Top Country Female Artist; Top Country Album; Top Hot 100 Song Presented by Rockstar; Top Selling Song; Top Radio Song; Top Collaboration (Fan Voted); Top Country Song.
Harry Styles (X Factor UK 7 3rd place with One Direction) nabbed two nominations including Top Radio Songs Artist and Top Radio Song.
Koryn Hawthorne (The Voice 8 4th place) is nominated for three awards including Top Gospel Artist; Top Gospel Album; Top Gospel Song. Morgan Wallen’s six nominations include Top Song Sales Artist; Top Country Artist; Top Country Male Artist; Top Country Album; Top Country Song (x2).
Tori Kelly (American Idol 9 Hollywood) is nominated for Top Christian Song.
