EXCLUSIVE: ‘Drop Dead Diva’ Adds More Celebs to Gay Prom Episode (Lance Bass & Clay Aiken)

We already know that ‘Drop Dead Diva’ will be tackling a tough issue this season based on the true story of Constance McMillen, the Mississippi high school senior banned from her prom for wanting to take her girlfriend.

Now AOL TV has learned exclusively that even more openly gay celebrities have agreed to guest star on this very special ripped-from-the-headlines episode.

‘Drop Dead Diva’ guest stars Lance Bass, Clay Aiken, Amanda Bearse

Former *NSYNC member Lance Bass, ‘American Idol’ alum Clay Aiken and ‘Married … With Children”s Amanda Bearse are in for the proceedings for the show’s fifth episode of the season (season 3 premieres June 2011 on Lifetime).

Bass plays a casting director who approaches Fred (Ben Feldman) to be in an energy-drink commercial; Aiken is a witness in one of Grayson’s (Jackson Hurst) cases about a mail-order bride scam; and Bearse will be playing a judge. They join previously announced guest star Wanda Sykes, who’ll be playing the judge for the episode’s biggest case, and McMillen herself, who has a cameo as Sykes’ bailiff.

Report: Cowell Quits UK ‘X Factor’

While he continues to do his tedious fan dance as to who will judge the U.S. X Factor, Simon Cowell has reportedly told Brit broadcaster ITV that he will not be judging this year’s home-grown version. According to the Daily Mail Cowell has dropped out because of health fears. Coping with running two X Factors on either side of the Atlantic, as well as producing both versions of Got Talent and ITV’s new game show Red Or Black, is too much – even for the famously workaholic Cowell

Cole closer to ‘X Factor’ deal

Cheryl Cole is closing in on her deal to being named a judge on Fox’s “The X Factor.”

The Brit singer-songwriter has been a judge on the U.K. version of the reality competition skein since 2008 when she replaced Sharon Osbourne but is a new face to American audiences.

She would join Simon Cowell and producer L.A. Reid as judges for the series that is set to debut in September. Cole’s last album, “Messy Little Raindrops,” was released in November and the single “Promise This” shot to No. 1 in the U.K. charts.

Sources say the contract is currently being written for Cole and her announcement as the third judge should be coming soon after.

Simon Cowell on ‘X Factor’ Judges: ‘No One is Either In or Out’

In London, “Extra” tried to get the scoop from “X Factor” creator Simon Cowell on who will be taking the seats on the judging panel.

“No one is either in or out at the moment,” Cowell coyly responded.

What about the rumor Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie was on the list? “She is cute. You either got to be cute or slightly mad, which is why Paula [Abdul] is still in the mix.”

Pia Toscano Wants To Perform With Charice At ‘American Idol’ Finale: ‘I’m Such A Huge Fan!’

We were all sad to see Pia Toscano leave American Idol last week, but at least we’ll see her again for the big finale this May — and we know exactly who she hopes to perform with! “Charice Pempengco? She’s the most amazing singer ever,” Pia told HollywoodLife.com exclusively April 12 at a taping of MTV’s The Seven. “I would absolutely perform with her, she’s insane.”

“When I was covering all of my Celine Dion songs, I would watch her videos,” Pia confessed. “She’s just out-of-this-world amazing and I am such a huge fan of her.”

Cee Lo Green Sounds Off On ‘The Voice’

But Cee Lo’s career is hotter than ever. So why would he join a show like this, right now?

And my other burning question was…just how is “The Voice” different from “American Idol,” “The X Factor,” “America’s Got Talent,” “CMT’s Next Superstar,” and all the other TV talent shows out there?

‘Glee’ scoop: Gwyneth Paltrow will cover Adele on next week’s episode

Good news Gleeks: Not only is Gwyneth Paltrow back next week on Glee as Holly Holliday, but a Fox spokesperson confirms she’s also covering “Turning Tables” from Adele’s awesome new album, 21. It’s a veritable Gwyneth-palooza in terms of music news, with this latest nuggest coming on the heels of her “Over the Rainbow” duet with Matthew Morrison premiering tomorrow on iTunes (listen to our exclusive 60 second tease here). While we sadly don’t have Gwyneth’s Glee version yet, here’s the similarly fabulous Adele performing her track…

‘Glee’s’ Darren Criss reacts to Logo’s NewNowNext Awards win

“It was my first legitimate — well, I don’t want to say legitimate to negate any other awards I’ve ever gotten,” he says. “But it’s the first time I’d been nominated with people that I was really kind of like — Oh my God, Andrew Garfield, Donald Glover, Emma Stone… all these people who I think are awesome!

“I don’t know what to say, really. I was really touched and surprised and thankful,” he adds.

‘Dancing With the Stars’: Karina Smirnoff and ‘Ralpheo’ on that ‘Playboy’ thing and their unique chemistry

Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff’s waltz to the theme from Franco Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet” during week 4 of “Dancing With the Stars” got us a little choked up — as we may have mentioned.

But don’t call it a comeback.

“I don’t feel that we had lost our mojo,” Macchio said backstage, referring to their rebound on the scoreboard. “It was bigger, though. The music is so melodrama, the story is a tragedy, and you have 89 seconds of dance time… we wanted to draw the audience in.”

‘Dancing With the Stars’: Mark Ballas remains coy about Pia Toscano, not choreography

Our inner (and often outer) fanboy was thrilled when Mark Ballas and partner Chelsea Kane briefly turned the “Dancing With the Stars” ballroom into the Hogwarts discotheque during their April 11 performance.

Dancing the Viennese Waltz to the John Williams’ original “Harry Potter” theme, Chelsea and Mark gave the 300-year-old number a new spin — and while it certainly pleased the crowd, everyone was a little nervous about what the judges would have to say. (It was only two weeks ago that the duo got slammed for playing their Jive too fast and loose.)

Simon Cowell wants to see Jersey attitude at tryouts for his new TV show

Will the notoriously blunt Cowell be kinder to pre-teen hopefuls?

“It’s the other way. I have to say to them, ‘You gotta be nice to me,’ ” Cowell says, laughing. “It’s true. ‘Treat me gently.’ I think the days of somebody being pushed on singing ‘Good Ship Lollipop’ are over. These kids have got so much knowledge, attitude, swagger, coolness now. They don’t watch TV. They watch YouTube. So, they kind of work out the kind of artist they want to be. I think they’re going to have a great time and teach me a lot.”

“I was trying not to show it, but I’m not very good at hiding my feelings,” he says. “It was the same thing effectively for nine years, and because I was doing this other show in the U.K. [on which] there was no age limit and I was seeing groups, I kind of started to get itchy feet about bringing the show over here.”

Why does anyone think it’s a good idea for Gwyneth to bland up “Turning Tables”? Ugh. I hope people at least download the real version of the song.

Ooh, maybe she’ll sing it with Adele at the Grammys next year as a special “treat.”

  • koshka

Great way to start a music career Gwyneth. Ugh.

I’m getting tired of Simon’s ‘who are the judges going to be’ game. Just announce them already. I don’t think anyone really cares especially after AI just played it last summer.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’ve enjoyed some of Gwyneth’s covers on Glee, and it appears to benefit the original artists when she does cover their songs.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m getting tired of Simon’s ‘who are the judges going to be’ game. Just announce them already. I don’t think anyone really cares especially after AI just played it last summer.

I agree and I don’t care either. I also don’t think that Pauler has any chance at being a judge on X-Factor, and Simon just keeps mentioning her for the press.

  • fuzzywuzzy

It definitely looks like Idol has made a deal with TMZ for publicity for the contestants. I wonder how Pia feels about this (not that she has any choice in the matter).

  • tinawina

Jennifer Hudson’s son is sssooooo cute! Love him.

  • Mary102

Why does anyone think it’s a good idea for Gwyneth to bland up “Turning Tables”? Ugh. I hope people at least download the real version of the song.

Double ugh from me. I think Gwyneth’s whole singing experiment is a big joke anyways – she’s really not a very good singer or performer. On Glee her character is borderline annoying, and I loathe the eps that feature her. I’m cringing at the thought of her covering Adele.

  • sma11ie

Why does anyone think it’s a good idea for Gwyneth to bland up “Turning Tables”? [...] Ooh, maybe she’ll sing it with Adele at the Grammys next year as a special “treat.”

Heh. Maybe she’ll be dancing in sky high stilettos on top of a piano? Her range is so limited though, I wonder how she’ll interpret it.

Oh, about the Scream premiere, if you check out MaximoTV’s youtube channel, looks like they interviewed Will.i.am (I feel so dumb, typing that out) about Pia and he apparently said that she “didn’t move like Tina Turner”. So there you have it… in case anyone wanted to hear from him about Idol some more… [crickets]?

Back away from Adele Gwyneth.. Just back off ;)

Cute review by twins who attended Danny’s concert last friday night:

To be honest we weren’t major fans before, only because we hadn’t really paid attention to him but we are now! We love that a live show can do that. Danny had killer stage presence, he effortlessly connected with the audience, and his voice was out of this world. No joke.

    http://twin-love.com/2011/04/10/danny-gokey-concert-review/

Lol- Maybe one reason they loved him-one of their pics shows him working it with the PYTs in the auto line-he was holding both their hands at once ;)

  • LK3

I love Turning Tables. Don’t think I’ll love Gwynnie’s version so much though.

I also could care less about the XF judges. It will be the most anti-climatic announcement ever by the time Simon gets around to telling the world. Especially if Cheryl Cole is one of the judges. Yawn.

eta: Pia wants to duet with Charice? Yeah..I can totally get that.

  • SpenserJ

they interviewed Will.i.am (I feel so dumb, typing that out)

Last week I decided to call him Willy from now on, since he has the stupidest name ever.

It will be the most anti-climatic announcement ever by the time Simon gets around to telling the world. Especially if Cheryl Cole is one of the judges.

I thinik Simon’s taken this game as far as it can go. By the time he announces who they’ll be, no one will care!

i have a question: is there going to be an “Idol Gives Back” this year? because i don’t recall Ryan talking about it although he may have…and because i thought they were going to do it every other year and they already did it last year during Season 9.

Wow! David’s cover of Rolling In The Deep was getting a lot of buzz yesterday, now even Perez posted it. I’m thrilled its getting so much attention. Definitely right up there as one of the best covers he’s ever done. Now that’s someone who can cover Adele…back away Gwyneth!

Yay for confirmation about Idol next week!

  • sma11ie

Pretty cool that Perez Hilton has picked up David Cook’s cover of Rolling in the Deep from Saturday! Nice to see he’s getting some mileage out of this. Even though apparently he was a bit peeved about the technical issues he was having, he covered well, and it doesn’t seem like anyone else noticed, as he’s getting pretty positive reviews from radio stations and blogs.

I hope he continues to do it in concert and irons out the kinks. I’m dying to see it live. I love that song when Adele sings it, and David’s is my favorite male cover of it.

Good job by RCA ;) Definitely isn’t a coincidence that Cook is just about to release a single so they’re working the blogs to get him some more awareness through his cover of the hot single by the hottest act out there. It was a smart song choice by Cook. I don’t know if I need to add this but obvs RCA probably wouldn’t have run with this if they didn’t think the cover was good.

I think it is great that Taylor and Ruben are always willing to do things for the home area. Sounds like a great festival.

Yeah, I feel like there’s been a subtle “hey, remember me?” thing going on LOL. They’ll probably save the big guns for the album drop but its nice to see some effort going into building awareness before the single drops too.

  • workdog

I don’t “follow” David Cook, per se, but when he’s mentioned in something I usually read what he has to say. He really seems like a grounded, sincere person, and music is a part of him not just a means. I like that. I also like his snarky, intelligent sense of humor and realness. I get the feeling he attends what he has to in the celeb world but would prefer to just be on stage performing his music without having to go through all of the rest. Anyway, I wish him and his fans success with his projects; he seems like a good egg.

eta: Tinawina, yes, I do think the gentle nudge of remember me is at play here; but he will be exposed to millions in a week and I imagine he’ll make the most of it. It’s such an opportunity to garner that exposure and to have it fall to the wayside by a bad performance or choice; I doubt he’ll make that error.:-) It’s funny…like I said…I don’t follow him but when he is on TV and I catch it, the performance usually isn’t a waste of time, so there’s that.

Good job by RCA Definitely isn’t a coincidence that Cook is just about to release a single so they’re working the blogs to get him some more awareness through his cover of the hot single by the hottest act out there. It was a smart song choice by Cook.

My Pop station teased a snippet of Cook’s Adele cover after playing the original, followed by a snippet of Mike Posner’s cover. They asked who it was singing, then played it as a contest to win tickets to some random show later in the hour.

  • suenigma

You know, that would have been my first instinct too, but I don’t think so in this case, for a couple of reasons.First, he and the band just started working on this cover last week and there were several technical difficulties (he missed a whole verse mid-song for instance), and I can’t see him being bhappy with it, as awesome as I think it is. Also RCA and Sony never even retweeted one of the multiple copies fans sent to them – probably don’t want to muddy the waters with a new single coming out next week, and on the heels of the DYFAM cover. And finally, it all seems to have started pretty organically from the original tweet and link that was sent out by the host radio station, picked up by about a 1/2 dozen other stations, and then picked up by some random bloggers and small, small, small music sites (ie. music philes). Only then did Idolator, MTV and Perez, etc. start posting it. Who knows, but not a typical label push.

  • sma11ie

    Good job by RCA

Maybe it’s cuz I have so little faith in RCA, and am always hesitant to give them credit, but I don’t feel like RCA had anything to do with this. RCAEd has confirmed what we’ve always known, which is that David chooses what to play at live shows, including his choice of covers. It’s typically not a David Cook show without an 80s cover or three =P. But he said at the show that they consciously decided to step outside their box here with Adele. Anyway, I’ve been watching the whole thing unroll on Twitter, etc. since the cover happened on Saturday, and it all seemed pretty organic to me. At first, the excitement was contained to the fans, and those at the Pet-a-Palooza, and of course Idol blogs picked it up after MJ posted it. On Saturday, the extent of the buzz was that one the openers Andy Grammer tweeted about it, fans at the show tweeted about it, and the radio station that hosted tweeted out the youtube a couple times, raving about it and talking about how people were calling about it. Then it was blogs like Idolator, and random sites like about.com and examiner.com reviewing the concert. Then a few random music blogs—all minor stuff, but it continued to be picked up by a few radio stations, mostly Mix stations like 94.1, including a station that also hosts a Pet-a-Palooza, then some pop stations, and now Perez, MTV Canada. I don’t think RCA is pushing it. They still haven’t even posted a video of the Adele cover on DCO’s front page. JMO, YMMV, etc.

Speaking of video…. HQ video of the cover from Mix 94.1!!! Soooo much better than youtube quality!
    http://mix941fm.radio.com/2011/04/12/david-cook-covers-rolling-in-the-deep/

  • tinawina

So this is organic, its not PR or anything? That’s actually better.

Let’s see if RCA or 19M try to do anything with it now that it’s happening.

  • suenigma

The radio station is all excited that Perez picked it up from them and has released a HQ video, and perhaps soundboard recording. It sounds FANTASTIC. Why the heck hasn’t RCA retweeted this yet?

Thanks AL and mj. Shorter than I expected, but then Adam is just introducing Robyn. He is such a natural speaker. He does better than many actors, who you can tell they are reading the teleprompter. I think partly, it is Adam’s voice and perfect diction.

  • standtotheright

Why the heck hasn’t RCA retweeted this yet?

To be fair, they did RT one of the radio station mentions and it was one of the better sounding YTs. But I do think it should be mentioned/linked on DCO, and may have made noises in that direction to responsible parties.

Speaking of embedded vids, Hudson’s son should sing with her on everything. I’m kind of indifferent to the song, but he’s soooooo cute.

I didn’t mean (though I see where people might think I implied it) that Cook coordinated with RCA and let them know his song choice so they could work on blog placement. I meant that blogs like Perez Hilton and Just Jared have been known to feature things for promotional purposes that label or management forward to them and I will be VERY surprised if this weren’t one of them. You gotta work the blogs to lay the groundwork and RCA (or I guess 19) saw an opportunity with the RITD cover. I think it was smart of them.

Fandom is a funny place. The superlatives that get thrown around always crack me up, and you’d think (insert favorite Idol) was the first to originate their style of clothing, their ability to rearrange songs, their mannerisms on stage, etc. Love is blind, apparently.

  • Trina

I feel bad his amazing cover of “Drive” has been totally overshadowed. Its really beautiful. I mean even I was like “ooh Drive yay” then minutes later RITD happened it was like one of those “holy shit WTF just happened” moments like when AI boards ploded after Billie Jean lol

  • aa618892

Haha! I can’t stop laughing at Michelle Collins interview with Adam. I love how she makes him crack up! And his take on the contestants with “plead the fifth” on James. Smart guy. He just gets all giddy when talking about Sauli, so cute!

  • aa618892

Forgot to add, I sure am getting an education from Adam on Urban Dictionary. He sure is um..informed, lol.

  • Soberba

AL, thanks for posting Adam’s interview with Michelle Collins. That was so funny. Interesting, Adam likes Haley. She was the first one he mentioned, then Pia. I thought Adam liked James, but apparently he’s not that into him, although he said that James is talented. I can’t get into Haley, but I agree with him about James. I used to like him, but his performance last week was underwhelming and, imo, showed he doesn’t have much versatility. But he’ll probably make top 3 anyway.

  • Mel1

I thought Perez had minions to search out things to post? I’d bet not everything he posts comes from publicists. But maybe you’re right, most of it probably comes from publicists, so maybe 19 noticed all the minor music blogs and radio stations posting the cover and decided to forward it to Perez’s people. I just didn’t think RCA is doing anything to promote the cover since they haven’t even posted it on DCO, and @RCAPromo didn’t even tweet it until it decided to RT @Alice1059′s tweet on it, and that was like the 10th station to tweet about it. They haven’t tweeted the Perez post either.

Here’s a link for both a news item and an interesting article. The news is about a possible private Cook radio station show (way down the page), and the article above it is questioning if maybe the voters for AI are right and the producers are wrong. It sounds like someone has been reading here or at least agrees (higher up the page).

Really enjoyed that HQ version of RITD! Love that song and David sounded great on it! Thanks for posting the link.

I’m loving the organic feel of all this buzz (regardless of what’s really happening behind the scenes). The buzz on RITD really does seem organic (especially since RCA has not really been at the forefront of this (not they ever really are)) and also the organic trending of Paper Heart (#4 worldwide) on Saturday after he sang it at Pet-a-Palooza. Loving this! Here’s to hoping for more of the same next week with the new single (The Last Goodbye).

ETA: I loved how the Las Vegas radio station called RITD, “hands down the most talked about moment from last weekend’s Mix 94.1 Pet-A-Palooza.” And their flailing about DC during yesterday’s morning show was pretty cool too.

Did someone mention in the Pet-a-Palooza thread that playing at a pet adoption show was a bad career move… ? Hee.

All that said, another reason I don’t think RCA is behind this is actually a gripe. I love the positive attention on Cook, ESPECIALLY by the radio stations, who I hope will remember his awesomeness when it comes time to play his new single… BUT I only wish all these posts on his awesome cover might somehow mention that A) he’s got the lead single to his sophomore dropping soon, and/or B) he’ll be playing it next week on Idol! I mean, talk about talking points, c’mon! If only all those music blogs and radio station sites and DJ’s mentioning it on air would know to drop a line about his forthcoming single and album… What a fail. So… WHY didn’t RCA put out that press release yet? Ugh. Sorry, so much good stuff coming, and I find something to complain about =P. I am, afterall, a David Cook fan ;).

ETA: windmills, I totally believe that’s how Perez works. I’m just thinking RCA specifically isn’t behind this whole Adele cover thing, since A) it doesn’t look like they’re really promoting it, as they were like the last ones barely onboard, and B) they’re pretty stupidly not using it to drop key info on his upcoming single/album/AI appearance. I’m guessing if anything, it was his manager on 19′s side. But even then, why no mention of the upcoming stuff?

Perez does have minions but it’s like with any gossip blog, what gets posted at Perez, JJ, etc., is a mix of sensationalized stuff that’ll get them hits, stories mentioning their favorite loved or hated celebs, hot stories that are trending in pop culture, and planted stuff by publicists/management/PR teams.

The way I can usually tell a video or song’s been planted is when Perez posts the video with one line positive description and nothing else. I remember it happened with something of Carrie’s during the PO era (I think one of her videos was featured there but not as a premiere). There’s just something about his tone that’s different.

As much as it pains me to say it, labels/management work with Perez – they make him feel important to get favorable coverage and they obviously want to take advantage of the reach he has. It’s why people like Gaga and Taylor Swift kiss up him (Gaga parties with him, Taylor sent him one of her platinum plaques), why Adam’s done an exclusive interview with Perez, why labels will sometimes leak singles or sneak peeks 1st to his blog, and so on and so forth.

He won’t post everything but there’s an understanding when it comes to strategic timing. Cook’s about to be very visible so it benefits Perez to look like he was ahead of the game and Perez is more likely to be positive about The Last Goodbye since he’s been buttered up.

Well, she’s perpetuating the myth that this show is watched mostly by teenage girls (which I don’t think is true), and it was a little rude to go tell them to go find boyfriends LOL. But, otherwise, I thought her comments were pretty interesting.

I’m glad they called out the judges on the “everyone’s a superstar” thing. Knowing how Slezak feels about Jacob’s comment last week, I really can’t wait until he gets voted off, so I can see that really uncomfortable exit interview.

I know Just Jared posts about certain celebs on his site by payola, pr etc. ie Sophia Bush, Jennifer Garner. I can’t go to his site anymore since the St Angie fans live there.

My fave gossip site is Dlisted. The guy that runs that site is so funny and calls out celebs and idiotic stunts they do. So snarky..lol

sma11ie: But even then, why no mention of the upcoming stuff?

But this kind of serves the purpose of reminding people of Cook and his voice without going into sell mode. Just Jared’s usually more about previewing upcoming stuff so if he posts the video then I think you can expect a mention of the upcoming single/album. GossipCenter.com’s another place that’ll mention upcoming stuff.

I was thinking the press release will either come as soon as Idol announces next week’s performers (late Thursday/early Friday morning) or Monday? It’ll be your all you can eat “David Cook releases the lead single for his much anticipated sophomore album Tuesday! With a return live performance on AI Thursday!” probably with a preorder option for the album that goes with the single being released to i-Tunes.

Maybe you’ll get your album title then. But I was thinking they could do a separate press release with the album title and tracklist after the single’s gotten some traction or maybe even after the single’s 1st week at i-Tunes to brag about what a great start Cook is off to.

By the way I got this off MJ’s twitter: Marc Malkin’s reporting Cook’s album is due in June: link That makes sense, it’ll give them enough time to do the album launch right. If it’s true because he didn’t quote Cook or anything.

  • sma11ie

But this kind of serves the purpose of reminding people of Cook and his voice without going into sell mode.

Yeah, usually I look for that tell-tale “sell mode” line when I suspect a gossip story is planted by PR—like, OMG, Jake Gyllenhaal, who has a movie coming out this week, took Taylor Swift to meet the parents and Maggie lurves her! Or Kim Kardashian, who has a new perfume coming out, spotted with so and so blah blah blah. I was hoping for that line in all the posts of Cook’s cover—like check out this awesome cover by David Cook, who has a new single dropping next Tuesday/will be performing his new single next week, and has an album due out this summer! Yeah, I know the press release is coming soon, I just can’t help but wish timing wise, it could’ve come earlier, cuz then maybe all these radio stations and blogs would already have some useful facts to add to their posts. Okay, I’ll stop complaining. I’ll let the “experts” (cough, RCAEd) at RCA and 19 do their jobs with a planned rollout. Can’t wait til next week! NEW SINGLE!! Woot!

Marc Malkin’s reporting Cook’s album is due in June

I think there were reports that he told some fans this Saturday that the record is dropping in June as well.

I guess it’s better than the soccer mom meme? LOL (If Nigel had his pick on what to perpetuate, I’m guessing he’d prefer teenage girls)

Usually it’s the publicist, and not the label, who will feed information to blogs, magazines, and the rest. Not that this is an example of that.
