Pardon my ignorance, but I have question. How is it possible to have that many billboard charts? This is a legit question. :)

  • Kirsten

Pardon my ignorance, but I have question. How is it possible to have that many billboard charts?

Believe me, I ask myself that every week. Here is an example of real charts for singles of one format (R&B):
    Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs
    Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop
    Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop
    R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay
    R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs
    Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Recurrent
    R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs
    R&B Streaming Songs
    R&B Digital Songs
    R&B Songs
    Adult R&B
    Rap Songs
    Rap Airplay
    Rap Digital Songs
    Rap Streaming Songs
    Rhythmic

I only report on one of those.

And then there are a lot of formats you may not be aware of.
    Regional Mexican Airplay
    Tropical Digital Songs
    Comedy Digital Tracks
    World Digital Songs
    Kids Digital Songs

And then you go over to albums. Currents. Catalogs. Independents. Heatseekers – East North Central (and all other points of the compass).

Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little on the total. ;-)

  • Jonkey

Well you listed about 20, but I still cannot imagine it ever reaching 46K++!!! Thanks for the response though. Have a great one.

yeah that’s the best they can do right now. i think the album will eventually be certified GOLD maybe by the end of the year. that wouldn’t be too bad.

  • Madilo

you’re reaching here, i think, there single did not perform well so i don’t expect the album to do well (i wish them the best though) and will be falling after the release week (i hope i’m wrong)

    11 WEEKS ON THE CHART

  • Madilo

Coming for someone else’s wig, yes :)

  • girlygirl

John Mayer’s stuff rarely gets played on pop radio these days, so I wouldn’t count on the tour helping GGG much in that format. Instead it will have to grow on CHR as it has been doing, though adds, requests, sales, etc.

  • girlygirl

Looking at today’s chart, it appears that GGG will end up at #5 on this week’s published HAC chart. Mirrors has a much better bullet than GGG and Next to Me is probably a few spins too many ahead of Phillip for him to catch Emeli Sande by the time the published chart gets released tomorrow.

It also appears Kelly’s single will just miss the Top 10. Could possibly pass M&S and The Lumineers and end up at #11 (I don’t know if either of those songs are eligible to go recurrent, though, if she doesn’t pass them).

  • girlygirl

According to the Pulse board, there won’t be a ton of songs eligible to go recurrent on the Pop chart this month:

Eligible to go recurrent THIS week (05/26):
    Mumford & Sons

Eligible to go recurrent NEXT week (06/02):
Bruno Mars (“When I Was Your Man”)
    Justin Timberlake (“Suit & Tie”)
    Pitbull ft. Christina Aguilera

Eligible to go recurrent in TWO weeks (06/09):
    Fun.

Eligible to go recurrent in THREE weeks (06/16):
    Rihanna (“Stay”)

Eligible to go recurrent in FOUR weeks (06/23):
    Krewella

Eligible to go recurrent in FIVE weeks (06/30):
    Fall Out Boy
    Icona Pop ft. Charli XCX

  • Madilo

    that’s 8 songs :)

  • girlygirl

yes, but (A) not all 8 will go recurrent the same week and (B) just because they are eligible to do so doesn’t mean they will actually go recurrent :)

  • jpfan2

Does a song go recurrent when it falls below the top 10 on CHR? I think that’s the current rule but I’m not 100% sure.

  • Madilo

Below top 10 and after 20 weeks for mediabase chart. BB may have a different rule though

  • Madilo

all the songs you listed will go recurrent in due date except the ones for june 30.

  • Mateja Praznik

Union J’s “Carry You” and Phillip Phillips’ “Home” have been released in the UK less than an hour ago.

  • macfae

    Thanks! Good to hear.
I’m curious ( spelled “excited” ) as to how well Home will do there. Looking forward to hearing reports when there are some.

  • maymay

Phillip`s EP is #25 on UK iTunes chart for now. Lask week it was around #250. Why does the label not release his standard album in UK?
As for Home. it doesn`t make the top 1500 so far.

  • macfae

What songs are on his EP?

They did not release Home only as a single but the EP, so annoying maybe they thought it would not do well ?

The album will be released next week, it’s available for pre-order.

i’d be more inclined to ‘trust’ the ukairplaychart web site…

“Radio Airplay Chart is compiled by Radiomonitor from the music played on 316 stations or 99.7% of UK radio, by audience”…

it gives you a play count as well as an overall audience impact… which is what drives place on the chart… so is very legit…
who knows what the charly1300 is based on…

  • Mateja Praznik

Sales of the EP also count towards the singles chart placing. Some artists release singles as single song download only, some release single and remixes together as an EP and then you can buy songs as an EP or separately. All sales of different versions and remixes are added together.

Union J also have an EP, currently #1 on the iTunes album chart and the single is #8.

  • Face

Union J are currently (after 11 hours) #1 on UK iTunes album chart (the EP) and Carry You is #7 on singles chart….

P2 is currently #26 on album chart (EP) and #283 on singles chart with Home…

this week Union J’s Carry You climbed from #29 to #22 on UK radio airplay charts (2214 plays and audience impact of 24.29 million)…

meanwhile on the same chart P2′s Home dropped from #24 to #29 (673 plays & 21.23 million impacts)…

  • Madilo

yeah i’ll take that then and Home’s chart position is better there :)

only the 4 track EP was available to pre-order… however once available to buy people can purchase individual songs or the whole EP… all will count as sales in terms of UK singles chart position… Mateja explains it much better in a post further up the thread :)

  • Madilo

He’s not making it easy for JT, battling that 4th place lol
    good update overall :)

  • jayidrocks

But it declined on this chart. :(
Does this mean, “Home” already peaked and it is on the way downwards or is the UK-airplay more “moody” and the songs often go up and down on the charts?

  • Madilo

it means that it got less spins than the week before

  • jpfan2

GGG is getting better updates that the other songs in the top 5! It could/should go at least top 2.

  • Madilo

if it does not slow down like others did lol Ihope it reaches #1 not #2 but i’ll take #2 if i can’t have #1 lol

  • Face

it could be either… for a song like Home… that isn’t from an established act or doesn’t have potential for being played on the big pop/edm/urban stations…
it’s best chance of gaining radio spins if it starts to sell well… that may see it played more by stations already playing or being picked up more quickly by other HAC/AC/lite rock/pop stations…

  • Madilo

so they’ll combine all to have the sales and chart position ?

as I understand it (and I am sure other posters will correct me if I have it wrong)…
EP sales count as 1 sale for each song on the EP… these will then be added to any individual sales for chart position purposes…
i.e. let’s say the Home EP sells 5k copies… and Home also sells 30k copies as an individual download… for chart position the total sales for Home on the single chart would be 35k…

  • Anny_nanny

The total sale of songs from the EP will *2 because Home is on the EP twice.

  • Mateja Praznik

Union J’s single is up to #5 and Phillip just cracked the TOP 200.

I hope Union J’s single is in the top 10 next Sunday on the Official charts.

UK’s radio is a lot more interesting than the US radio. I mean, just look at that TOP 100 chart!

    http://www.ukairplaychart.co.uk/c/?chart_type=radio&country=uk&length=10&range=weekly

I see Leanne Mitchell, The Voice UK winner at #31 with only 47 plays. i guess BBC Radio 2 support.

Most singles peak their first week on the official charts due to preorders. Unless the song really explodes. Unlike in the US, on air/on sale releases are rare.

LOL, didn’t realise that… thanks for pointing out :) …
so in that case, using above example scenario… 5k of EP sales and 30k of individual track sales would be 40k in total…

  • Madilo

what would be a good or ok first week sales for Home considering all the circonstancies ?

  • Face

LOL, yes Leanne has had a fair bit of exposure on Radio 2…

however it seems very little other promo or airplay…

a few items in the media here this week about how the album probably wont reach the top 100 in it’s debut week… mid week it had sold less than 500 copies… and the single is languishing around 300 on the iTunes sales chart…

see below for some reports of this in the UK media… with obvious TV v XF comparisons…

Aside from Kelly Clarkson I don’t think any recent Idol songs have done well in the UK. I know Adam Lambert’s recent singles struggled there. So even a modest opening week for P2 is probably a decent accomplishment. I see GGG at #178 on the UK singles chart. Hopefully it gets a shot at moving into the top 100 there.

  • Karen C

That’s fantastic that Phillip is charting in the UK. Hope he does well.

  • Madilo

really GGG is charting in the UK, maybe it’s because of the album pre-order ? that’s good

    #148 United Kingdom

well, it’s still very early days… but tbh I expected it would be charting a lot higher at this point… maybe not as well as Union J (now #4)…

this is just based on how the UK sales chart tends to work… by Sunday evening (now 6pm here) any new song that has been released on iTunes and is getting the level of radio airplay that Home is (been top 30 on UK radio airplay for 3 or 4 weeks now) it has normally climbed to within 10-20 places of where it is likely to end up charting for the week… based on pre-orders and anticipation of the song being released…

given airplay seems to have at best plateaued or at worst peaked… and without him being here doing a media promo tour (tv, radio, online publications etc…) to let people know his song is available… then based on how things tend to go, I don’t expect the song to climb drastically over the course of the week…

of course if the radio plateau/drop is just a blip… then all is not lost and it may turn out to be more of a slow burn…

  • Madilo

But isn’t the situation you described for the established and UK acts ? Considering that Phillip is an unknown artist and that he’s not there to do promo, i would love to hear you about that.

  • taylor

Adam’s NCOE ended up peaking at #17 the first week it was released.
As I understand it, you pretty much know what the song is going to do on the chart within the first 24 hours.
Carrie’s single, Good Girl, debuted at #56.

  • Mateja Praznik

Well, most singles peak in the first week of release.

The song gets premiered on the radio, music video drops a couple of weeks later and the pre-order goes up on iTunes and other retailers. Single (as a single song download or EP) goes on sale later, could be 8 weeks or more after the radio premiere. Some releases get lots of pre-orders. I remember when One Direction’s debut single got released. The EP and the solo song were #1 in like … 30 minutes.

Most releases are held back, so most songs sell the most in their first week of release. This usually means the songs peak on the chart in their first week and then the only way for them is down. That’s why there are so many #1 singles per year. Only the biggest hits stay at #1 for more than one week.

On air/on sale releases are rare. They tried to move to on air/on sale system a few years ago, but the labels prefer to do it the old way. It’s easier to have release schedule for 2 months in advance or more and it’s easier to score a #1 single with all the pre-orders and weeks of advertising. Jessie J dropped her new single on iTunes last Sunday and it was #5 all week, I think. Which is pretty good, but the song could be #1 if it was a held back release. Meanwhile, Rihanna can afford to drop a single out of the blue on a Wednesday and be #1 that Sunday.

So, Phillip’s situation doesn’t look good. If the first week is usually when the song peaks on the chart and the song is yet to crack TOP 100 on iTunes, this isn’t good. And there is a long way between TOP 100 and TOP 40. TOP 40 songs are played on BBC Radio 1 chart show every Sunday afternoon.

Adam Lambert at least had two short-lived TOP 40 singles and albums.

that’s the problem though… he is not known and he’s not here to do promo…

as I’ve said before US indie rock/pop acts don’t always have the same level of success here in the UK as they do in the US… they are competing with British acts who are touring, have local followings, will be creating buzz online, on social media etc… plus he has to overcome being a reality show winner.. not cool for that crowd…

if he (his label) had laid the ground work to establish an actual fan base in that UK market… i.e. some sort of small scale tour… maybe at universities… or as a support act for a more well known similar style act… he would’ve had that momentum to build on…

instead they appear to have promoted him only on radio… the UK equivalents to HAC and AAA but they aren’t huge single selling formats… unless the artist has a following or buzz…

so the only exposure anyone has had is from people who listen to those stations…
and if they aren’t buying the single in week 1… there’s little to cause radio stations who are playing him to play him more… or for those who aren’t playing him to add him to the playlist… then why would you expect it to start selling more as the week progresses or next week?

Cool chart! Jordin Sparks managed to have some success in the UK:

    and of course, Kelly:

  • springboard2

I agree. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Home has caught on with the British public.

  • springboard2

But he needs hits in order to become established, and Home hasn’t taken off in the UK. The fact that it did in the US would give it strong headstart, but the UK taste isn’t always the same as the US one.

  • Face

I think Jordin was even more successful here in the UK with the singles from her 2nd album than she was in the US…

  • jayidrocks

Is there known a release date of Phillips single or album in another european country?
Another question: How was “Ho, Hey ” doing (in the UK) in its first week after release?

  • jayidrocks

I only know, it had his peak after 5 weeks at #8. So this song seems to go against the “rules” for peaking of singles at the first week in the UK.

  • Madilo

if i recall correctly what Face told me, he/she said that they did well with their first single but struggled with the second one, folk/rock is not as popular as it is in the US, that’s what i remember.

  • Madilo

I’m not aware of any release in the horizon but maybe someone else will answer you.

  • Face

while I am with you 100% on the peaking in 1st (or maybe 2nd week) for mainstream pop, urban, EDM type acts…
I think indie rock/pop type acts often take a few weeks to peak… and often hang around in the chart for longer… recent examples are Fun, Imagine Dragons, Lumineers…

though they did all have much more buzz pre-release than P2… and ultimately more radio airplay than Home looks like it will have… plus they all debuted much much much higher than it looks like Home will do (based on sales so far today)… which helped increase airplay, buzz and then sales…

  • Face

    I did indeed say that (btw, I’m a he)…

British and US indie pop/rock is rarely as successful in the other market… in the mid 90s what was termed Brit-pop was huge here in the UK… i.e. Oasis, Blur, Supergrass etc… but that success never really translated across the pond in the US…

likewise the US mid 90s post grunge alt rock sound was never as popular in the UK… i.e. Matchbox 20, Hootie and the Blowfish etc…

if some these US indie/alt rock bands have success in the UK… it is rarely on the scale they have stateside…

also against P2 is the fact he has come off a reality tv show… which wont be seen as acceptable to much of the audience he is being marketed to…

and add to that Lumineers, Fun, Imagine Dragons have all had some decent chart and radio success in the UK in the last 6-12 months… there is the potential for over saturation of that US sound in a country that tends to only have a limited appetite for that genre…

  • Madilo

Expecting 38K for GGG, the sales will be down i think

  • jpfan2

Do you have any numbers on what the both songs total sales were in the UK?

  • jpfan2

Jordin did very well but I’m talking about recent Idol singles. Aside from Kelly, I don’t think any Idol singles have done well in the UK in the past 2-3 years.

  • girlygirl

yeah, Adam has had 3 singles chart in the UK, with NCOE doing the best in terms of peak position:

    David Cook charted with TOML

Just as predicted, GGG moves up on Mediabase POP chart as 3 songs are removed:

  • Madilo

it also moves up 2 spots on AC, it’s at #17 now :)
    I love sunday night :)

  • Face

Adam made a fleeting UK top 20 chart appearance with his last album and lead single NCOE… about 12 months ago… Carrie also debuted at #11 with her last album… but like Adam she dropped off the charts quite quickly…

so yes… Kelly is about the only real major AI success story in the UK…

  • Madilo

They almost have the same spins gain everyday, so i hope Mirrors slows down a bit in order for GGG to pass it lol
    Nice update for GGG :)

What’s the mistake on Pop? And no to JP from bachelorette. JP= my initials.

  • Madilo

when i wrote the post it was 52 57 but now it’s ok :)
Maybe it’ll pass Mirrors on HAC if it slows down

How recent do you want? The stats are from the last releases from Adam, Carrie and Jordin. Other than those three and P2, I don’t think any of the rest of the Idols have been promoted to the UK in the last three years.
    Anyone from season nine? No
    Scotty and Lauren? No
    P2? Yes
    Jessica or Colton? No
Who are you looking for? Kelly, Adam, Jordin, and Carrie have all had albums and singles from their last eras released in the UK. All of these Idols had singles/albums or both that were in the top 20 at some point. P2 is not currently doing as well as they did.
