The second week of X Factor UK auditions aired tonight across the pond amidst controversy over Auto-Tuning. Simon Cowell has banned the use of the vocal-improving software, reportedly switching episodes around so that he could edit them. Tonight’s auditions are completely au natural if the X Factor Powers That Be are to be believed.
Katy Perry was a guest judge in Dublin…so watch out for her!
The audition of the night goes to return contestant, Annastasia Baker. Simon compared her performance of the tired “Proud Mary” to a tranny act, but then suggests she take off her shoes and try again. She sings “To Make You Feel My Love” and it feels way more authentic. The judges let her through.
Mary Byrne is 50 years old, and is belatedly chasing her dreams of stardom, a la Susan Boyle. She sings “I Who Have Nothing” in a great big voice, and becomes visibly moved when the house gives her a standing ovation. Simon tells her she’s the best so far, but I don’t expect much here. Simon already has his middle-aged chanteuse, thank you very much.
The most interesting singer, to me, was a lad named Matt Cardle who performed a soulful and compelling version of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good.” I’m keeping my eye on him.
The rest: Boyband Temple Fire sang “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” in a hilariously bad way, another boyband, The Reason sang a very sweet version of “Fight For this Love” and deranged Michael Jackson impersonator, Michael Lewis is kinda scary.
What do you think of tonight’s performances? Anyone you like so far?
