X Factor UK Season 9: Week 5 Results

FAG ASH BREATH: THE REVENGE

I think it’s pretty clear now that TPTB think there is a place for only one boyband on XF UK and that boyband is not District3. They were given a bland song choice last night and their performance just had too much dancing and jumping going on. It was clear that everything (song choice, choreography, etc) was wrong for them. If they land in the bottom 2 tonight, they are likely going home. However, it’s possible that bad comments from the panel made their fangirls vote harder. So, who knows.
Union J were in the bottom last week, so that likely means their fanbase is alert.

Jahmene Douglas and Chris Maloney pretty much hit all the notes last tonight. They both had big songs. I don’t think they have a lot of potential for recording career, especially not Chris. He is dated and very cheesy. True cruise ship act. Jahmene is just boring and lacks a bit of originality, IMO. I’m afraid he is this year’s Joe McElderry/Marcus Collins. He is likeable and can sing, but I’m afraid he doesn’t have much of a chance to make after the show. But I expect that grandmas will vote for Jahmene.

James Arthur is getting the “true artist” edit. He is basically a rapping WGWG that often sounds constipated and in pain. I think he is trying to project “passion for music” with this act, but is he believable? He gives me the Matt Cardle vibes. I’m not sure if the voters like James’ rapping.

Kye Sones is trying, but his performances are just so-so for me. I think his song choice last night was a bit obscure, so he could be in trouble tonight.
Rylan Clark is a joke act, but the joke is coming to an end.

AdELLA is the only female in the competition left. She is like mini Adele and I think that’s her problem. Ella is talented and Adele is great, but do we really need Adele 2.0? I feel like TPTB are not even trying to hide that Ella is basically the mini version of Adele. Ella’s singing technique is improving and her voice can be really beautiful… But she is straining on the high notes “Firework” pushed her to her limits last night.

TOP 3 finalists: Jahmene, James, Ella
Bottom 2 candidates: District3, Rylan Clark, Kye Sones
Disposable list (who TPTB would like to get rid of ASAP): District3, Kye Sones, Chris Maloney

Rita Ora and No Doubt are performing tonight. The show starts at 8pm GMT (3pm EDT).

We start the show with cold opening. Oh, the show still claims that last night’s theme was Number 1s?

As always, the voice-over guy intruduces Dermot and the judges. The voting lines are still open.

Time for the group song! It’s Owl City’s and Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit, “Good Time”. It’s a mess. It’s also a sausage-fest. Ella is the only girl left, lost in the sea of dudes.

Time for a recap. Last night, TPTB only posted videos of 6 performances from the show. Union J’s and District3’s performances were missing. Distric3’s performance was posted in the morning and it looks like Union J’s performance won’t be posted at all. It looks like they have copyright problems. Boys changed some lyrics of their song (Love Story). The performance isn’t available on iTunes either.

Next, it’s time for the first guest performance and it’s this year’s guest judge Rita Ora. She is signed to Jay-Z’s label and sings Rihanna’s rejects. She had 3 #1 singles in the UK this year and her album went to #1. She is performing “Shine Ya Light” tonight.

5 minute warning from Dermot. No Doubt are performing after the break. ITV’s Player is working for me flawlessly tonight. Ah, Little Mix’s current single “DNA” is featured in Talk Talk’s commercial? Smart. “DNA” is out next week in the UK. Girls did some promo in Australia recently, so hopefully they get worldwide launch.

We are back and the voting lines are now closed.

No Doubt are performing “Looking Hot”. They released music video for this song a couple of days ago and then they withdrew it. Personally I didn’t have a chance to see it. Hopefully the video is still floating around somewhere. Anyway, No Doubt chat with Dermot after their performance. They loved James Arthur’s performance of “Don’t Speak”. Well, it’s not like we expected them to say he sucked?

Results after the break.

Safe:
Union J
Jahmene Douglas
Christopher Maloney
James Arthur
Ella Henderson
District3

Bottom 2:
Kye Sones
Rylan Clark

WOHO. Boybands both survived and this is going to be interesting. It’s Kye vs. Rylan. I suspected District3 got through when Union J were the first announced safe.

Rylan Clark sings “Kissing You” by Des’ree. And he even hits some nice notes? The crowd is cheering him on. Well done, Rylan.

Kye Sones sings Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up”. His best vocal performance on the show?

Nicole sends home: Kye Sones
Gary sends home: Rylan Clark
Louis sends home: Rylan Clark
Tulisa sends home: Kye Sones

DEADLOCK! Good job Tulisa. Rylan survives to sing another week, 100%.

Going home: Kye Sones!

Nicole still has 3 acts, Louis has 2 and Tulisa and Gary each have 1.

Next week’s theme: The Best of Britain
Next week’s fantastic line-up for Sunday: Ed Sheeran, Little Mix and One Direction

One Direction will be in the USA next Sunday, I hear they pre-recorded their performance.
