Women’s World Cup Soccer – USA Defeats Japan, Wins Title (VIDEO)

Congrats to the United States Women’s Soccer team, which won the World Cup Trophy for the first time in 16 years. It’s a record breaking 3rd World Cup for the US, beating the defending champs, Japan, 5-2.

America mostly dominated the game, played in Vancouver Canada on Sunday, with a huge assist from Carli Lloyd, who scored three times, the first hat-trick in a women’s final, to lead the United States to Victory. Hooray!

“I’m so proud and so zapped at the same time,” Lloyd said. ” It doesn’t feel real. We just made history.”  Scoring in the third, fifth and 16th minutes of play, It was her third goal that stunned the crowd. The player took a pass at the halfway line and and kicked a goal from 55 yards.

Japan’s goalkeeper was helpless as the ball flew across the line.  Lloyd was awarded the Golden Ball, as the best player at the World Cup. She also tied for most goals (6) in the tournament with Celia Sasic of fourth-place Germany.

  1. I don’t see how. The song was being used (barely) to promote the tournament. The tournament is over. The song was never connected to the U.S. Team in any meaningful way.

  2. That is awesome.

Possibly the best comment in my Twitter timeline was the dude who told his 7-year-old son “I want you to learn to play soccer like a girl.”

  3. Wow – that was all pretty cool…and I know nothing about the game – neither of my kids had an interest…and that’s what it takes for a sport to get my attention. But this was most excellent!

  4. The song (or any snippets) was not used at all during the pre-game or the game coverage, nor in any commercials.

  5. Gosh, I feel sorry for the athletes. You can really see the smoke in there from all the forest fires. That must have been tough to play in. The sky is orange.

The US team did a great job. A well-deserved win. Congratulations!

  6. That was a wild game. Can’t believe Carli Lloyd actually scored a goal all the way from mid-field. Awesome! Congratulations!

  7. The only time I heard the song was when Nick was performing it, and I only caught the end. I didn’t hear it at all during any of the games.

  8. I think unfortunately for him that particular ship has sailed.
Ironically, I did hear “Worth It” playing in the stadium when the team went up to get their medals.
    Maybe it may help 5H.
