Condolences to Simon Cowell and his family. His beloved mother, Julie has died at age 89. The X Factor auditions, scheduled for Monday have been cancelled.
Contestants were set to perform in front of the judges–Simon, Rita Ora, Nick Grimshaw and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, for the first audition round in Manchester UK. “They were due to start tomorrow and carry on into Tuesday and Wednesday,” said a spokesperson for Syco entertainment. “Tomorrow’s have been cancelled and we have not made any decisions beyond that.”
ITV bosses also confirmed the news to The Sun newspaper.
A show rep told the Sun, which broke the news, “Everyone at X Factor is devastated for Simon and there was no suggestion that filming would go ahead.”
Simon’s mom, Julie, reportedly died of a stroke, having spent time in a hospital in London recently, said a family source.
Julie Cowell was the mother of four boys – Nicholas, Simon, Tony and Michael, and step-mother to John and June. Simon’s father, Eric, died in 1999. Julie was also grandma to Simon’s first born son, Eric Cowell, named after his dad. That’s got to be a comfort to the family.
Simon’s brother, Tony, tweeted this evening, “Very sad night tonight. We will all miss Mum so very much. She was the heart and soul of our family.”
“Today our beloved mum Julie passed away,” said a rep for the family. “Anyone who had met her would know what a truly special and kind lady she was. We are heartbroken and will miss her terribly, but she is now at peace.
“We would like to thank the media for kindly respecting Julie’s privacy throughout and we politely request continued privacy for the entire family at this particularly difficult time.”
