I have no clue, whether TT will be there for another week or not. It just depends whether the label and the fans continue to promote it.

I assume that since vh1 will stop playing it, it means it won’t be on the countdown anymore :(. I wish more people got to see this beautiful video. I also wish that TT didn’t got the short treatment in it’s last week on the countdown.

  7. That’s a good update for September on Pop. I wonder if IIHY is reaching it’s peak on Pop. I think WWFM peaked at #13 in that genre. IIHY might peak in the teens as well.

Once a song gets a negative bullet, it’s pretty much dead so charting is kind of like watching someone on life support.

  10. Iihy had possibly the best update of it’s charting history last Saturday, so no surprise that the update today was weak. It still has a bullet of over 300 ( the – 96 is the bullet change It had a huge bullet increase last sat ) So I don’t think it has peaked yet. Probably will peak relatively soon tho

  11. Yes, I don’t think that IIHY is showing signs of peaking yet, both its spin and AI increase have been consistently decent all week. Of course, it could happen any day now.

  12. I don’t think IIHY is peaking yet either, I think in about 2 weeks it will and I am with Q3 that it will probably settle around top 15 maybe a tad higher. Either way even if its peaking nothing to be ashamed of or bothered by. All songs peak :-) I think its doing very well and for sure will go Gold. Better then a lot of other songs do. So I’m happy

Not to sound like everyone else but I hope they give Kris another single. I don’t think the Truth was a fair song to gauge Kris’s potential of a multi selling Single artist. IMHO.

Oh and Sleepwalker next please for Adam

That’s looking likely in my non-expert opinion, although he said last week they were still promoting it. I’ve read some comments that maybe it was seen as too sad a song for some country stations to really take up for high airplay. Some stations have really loved it though, Boston for one has been playing it quite a lot.
If it’s seen its ‘best days’ on radio (haha), I’m ok with that though would have loved it to go as high as the early expectations suggested. Danny got to #32 on both mediabase and Billboard, which is better than many new country artists have achieved this year, and pretty close to where Kellie’s last single peaked. I think she got to #29 or maybe #28.

  16. I assume that since vh1 will stop playing it, it means it won’t be on the countdown anymore.

I assumed videos stayed on the countdown until they weren’t in the Top 20 any more. Isn’t that why we vote? I guess it’s up to VH1, after all, not the voters.

  17. Sometimes videos are being pulled early for different reasons. Fans are voting so more people wall see the video and hopefully buy the song as a result.

It’s annoying that they didn’t even showed the full video of TT this time.

TT is no longer on the voting list.

  18. Steph6449, I’ve read some comments that maybe it was seen as too sad a song for some country stations to really take up for high airplay.

I so agree with this statement. I have watched Danny when he is singing fun kind of songs that are just that…*fun*….and he is so much more appealing to me. I may be in the minority here but I think he would be more successful to get away from the message songs…the angst theme…but….if that is Danny’s mission then so be it. An artist has to be true to himself….just not too sure Danny will catch on in the Country world……I wish him luck though……

  19. TT is no longer on the voting list.

Didn’t FYE exit the countdown early, as well? Maybe this means another single is being released soon. Who knows?

  20. Didn’t FYE exit the countdown early, as well? Maybe this means another single is being released soon. Who knows?

yes it did to make room for WWFM and WWFM didn’t stay the full 20 weeks to make room for IIHY….so fingers crossed that the reason TT was pulled was that they are having a new song and MV for Kris.

  21. The VH1 countdown is not just based on votes, they take into account the song airplay and sales, so, since TT has peaked, it is not surprising that they pulled it.

  22. I really hope that TT was pulled because a new single is about to be released.

  23. There may have been a time when the vh1 countdown was based solely on votes but it seems clear that time had long since passed.

  24. I so agree with this statement. I have watched Danny when he is singing fun kind of songs that are just that…*fun*…

IWNSG is really the only sad song on Danny’s album. We think it’s likely he will have a third single if this one has in fact peaked. Will be interesting to see what they choose, if that’s the case.

Danny has one other ballad on the album that they haven’t yet considered as a single (Tiny Life). All the rest of his album tracks are mid- or up-tempo. Or well, I’ve seen some call Crazy Not To a ballad though it feels more in the mid-tempo range to me.

Danny has said he hopes Crazy Not To will be his third single but it’s up to the label. He says it is one of the songs he gets the most requests for, and I think he likes that the girls like it, lol.

Just like when MTV used to play music on their music television station

  26. Steph6449

Have you heard whether it’s for sure that Danny will get a 3rd single? He’s done ok for a new country artist, but with neither MBD or IWNSG cracking the Top 20, is it definite he’ll get a 3rd single? I know nothing about the country market (as you can tell from my posts on the subject), but if there are questions about Kris getting a 3rd single off his album, I would guess that there would be similar questions about Danny getting one.

Please note: I’m not trying to put down Danny in any way, shape or form. I’m just wondering if there is a standard in terms of how many singles a new country artist generally gets off a debut album if that artist charts decently, but not super great. Any expert opinions would be greatly appreciated to help me continue to understand the country market better!! :)

  27. girlygirl, we haven’t heard anything official but Danny has said he expects to have one. I don’t think we will hear anything that seems official about another single (whether/which) until they are ready to say IWSNG is done.

As recently as a couple of days ago, Danny was telling one of his fansites that RCA is still promoting IWNSG and they planned to weather through a “tough chart” and get it moving back up. Maybe they have some tricks in mind to get it boosted back in the right direction. It’s a great song so I’d love to think that’s the plan and they can make it work. The way things sit right now though, it seems to me it is fading out short of some major intervention to change the dynamics in the next week or so. He’s not eligible to go recurrent for a while, for what that’s worth, though he would need to hold enough spins/points on mb to stay in the top 40.

  28. You’d think Carrie and Adam were the only two who have MV looking at this. Funny that Carrie and Adam are my two favorite Idols and their MV have long term appeal. Don’t know if there is any correlation just an interesting factoid.

I think being really attractive helps to prolong their appeal.

  29. Someone posted in the “twitter” thread that more singles from FYE are unlikely (according to an Adam interview).

I think no more singles from Adam or Kris from their debut albums. No idea about Danny since country is its own world.

  30. Hey Adam is up to #33 on Itunes now. He moved up a lot in the past 24 hours. MMMM maybe the little bit of controversy was good. He was the #1 trending topic on Yahoo for a bit last night and top 10 for awhile. He went up 10-12 spots

  31. Bringing this over from the Adam pap thread, because it seemed to me, off topic.

He’s kind of mentioned no more singles before, and I figured he would have announced something by now since IIHY is almost at the end of it’s run on POP. I think it’s a good decision. I am ready for his next era. And even though the album won’t be out till spring that means nothing in terms of a single-

Acutally I haven’t heard a lot from Adam about no new singles after IIHY. I think the last I heard, was new single beyond that, was dependent on how this one did. IIRC.

And the album in spring thing, is just an idea, who knows if he can. Regardless of single, supposedly working with whom, that isn’t a guarantee on making that. So no single until some possible future date of??? eh. Not impressed. But then I think not releasing SW is just pffft. IIHY is going to do more than I expected, which is make gold in the new few weeks, but I don’t see much beyond that. AND this is getting desperately off topic for this thread, and more numbers based.

  32. Wow, I think it’s a big mistake not to release Sleepwalker. It’s a classic Tedder song and about as universally loved as an Adam song gets. It also feels like a bit of an easier radio sell, but what do I know.

Well, if IIHY is, indeed, the last single, he better get that new single out in the early/mid Spring. Suddenly, it feels like there is a whole lot of pressure to have an album out by next summer. I really didn’t want Adam and his team to rush. Sleepwalker could have bought some more time to get the album out.

  33. I’m afraid IIHU didn’t do as well as it is expected for a hit pop single to do in 2010. Pop hits usually don’t have a problem to sell at least 2 million downloads these days – Adam’s single will only go gold. Too bad radio stations didn’t add the song faster – that way IIHU would sell more and there would be time for SW release.

Really how many singles you know that sell 2 million. Not too many. Right now IIHY is 31 in the world chart (sales and play. So I don’t think your assessment is correct. Smash hits sell 2 million. 2 million not so easy. Very few do it. You say only go gold as if that every single does that. They don’t! I think IIHY could go platinum we don’t know yet its still rising. Lets see what happens? Oh and from what I hear it actually did better then they expected. They wanted top 20 it most likely will go top 15. Not too shabby Especially with the competition. IMHO

I would say most hit pop songs these days sell at least 1 million, 2 is fairly common but not THAT common I think. What does everyone else think?

Still, I guess IIHY’s gonna do a bit better than gold and that’s it.

I’m actually a bit more interested in September right now. That song is moving fast, doing much better than expected. I’m not a big fan of Daughtry’s sound but I do like his voice. I have been fascinated with how he’s been received this time despite having one of the strongest selling, most long lasting albums out right now, not to mention a good selling tour. And its like no one cares. It seems like he deserves a lot more respect than what he actually gets both inside and outside the bubble.

  36. Who knows why he said maybe no new single- you never know if they have a plan to push IIHY one last time like they did for WWFM. Seems unlikely because he is going overseas, but like I said in the other thread- Max Martin ( who he said he will be working with again) might already have something ready for him that he can record and release while he is over there. Just a guess, but not really too far fetched.

Cool that IIHY is moving on up the itunes chart again! And as someone else pointed out- it could be because of the huge update last week, and IIHY also has a history of crappy weekend updates. Next week should paint a clearer picture. I also noticed that HAC has a lot of starters adding IIHY this week so they could very well be transitioning it over there.

  37. Really how many singles you know that sell 2 million. Not to many. Right now IIHY is the 31 in the world chart (sales and play. So I don’t think your assessment is correct. Lets see what happens?

OK, let’s see… It’s been a while since the last Hot Digital Songs chart leak, but I do read Billboard’s weekly articles and Yahoo!’s chart watch column.

    From the last column:

Here’s the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs, as tabulated by Nielsen/SoundScan. Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are” jumps from #2 to #1 (209K, 957K total). Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” dips from #1 to #2 (197K). Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” holds at #3 for the third week (155K). Nelly’s “Just A Dream” jumps from #7 to #4 (155K). Eminem featuring Rihanna’s “Love The Way You Lie” dips from #4 to #5 (147K). Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull’s “I Like It” holds at #6 for the third week (137K). Usher featuring Pitbull’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” drops from #5 to #7 (137K). Flo Rida featuring David Guetta’s “Club Can’t Handle Me” jumps from #11 to #8 (119K). Ke$ha’s “Take It Off dips from #8 to #9 (115K). B.o.B featuring Rivers Cuomo’s “Magic” holds at #10 for the second week (108K).

The fact is, top pop artists sell millions of singles. Big hits usually easily sell over 3 million downloads by the end of their run and then they continue selling long after that. Normal hits sell past 2 million and then eventually hit 3 million …

And I’m talking only about pop artists here – for example, I consider gold single for a country artist a big success.

  38. Really how many singles you know that sell 2 million. Not too many. Right now IIHY is 31 in the world chart (sales and play. So I don’t think your assessment is correct. I’ve not seen consistent numbers to even make a guess. Mostly we hear about the $$ that the big smashes pull in during their run. I’d venture to guess songs that do well with chart placing between from top 40 – top 15 are less than we suspect… just like album sales.

  39. The fact is, top pop artists sell millions of singles. Big hits usually easily sell over 3 million downloads by the end of their run and then they continue selling long after that. Normal hits sell past 2 million and then eventually hit 3 million …

I think your concepts of a big hit and a normal hit are a bit….. extreme. I say a normal hit is one million sales and a big hit is 2 million.

  40. I think your concepts of a big hit and a normal hit are a bit….. extreme. I say a normal hit is one million sales and a big hit is 2 million.

Hmm, I don’t know. This summer, Love The Way You Lie sold at least 300K downloads 5 weeks in a row and California Gurls sold 300K 4 weeks in a row … Both songs are now well past 3 million and are still selling … They will eventually hit 4 million. Airplanes is also past 3 million, Those are all big hits. So I don’t think my concepts are a bit extreme. 3 million selling singles are not rare anymore. I think that sales of current singles really exploded, even though overall single sales started decreasing.

I wish we got some leaks.

  41. whats going on with radio?playing katy and other singer so fast but for idols they go like turtles on radio.

My speculation is that they are committed to a spring album because they want him to tour again next summer, since touring has been his greatest success. And he needs new material to tour again and hopefully a hit song on the radio. He should be able to get bigger venues and more lucrative fair/festival giggs next year since he now has a track record with being able to sell out Musikfest, Pacific Amphitheater, etc. And he got lots of reviews saying what an amazing live performer he is.

  43. Hmm, I don’t know. This summer, Love The Way You Lie sold at least 300K downloads 5 weeks in a row and California Gurls sold 300K 4 weeks in a row … Both songs are now well past 3 million and are still selling … They will eventually hit 4 million. I think that sales of current singles really exploded, even though overall single sales started decreasing.

Those are only three songs though…So yes some smash songs sell super well, but I would certainly call WWFM and LLWD hits and neither has reached 2 million. I think the disconnect for you might be because you aren’t in America, so you are trying to go rely on numbers only, but trust me both songs were everywhere and were hits. Also, I think there are dozens of hit songs a year, maybe that is where we disagree.

I think you’re essentially saying the same thing as everyone else. The key phrase is “big hits”. Everybody agrees that big hits regularly sell over 2 million. We’re just saying that a regular old hit will sell like 1 mil or better.

  45. katy, eminem and other singer have huge fanbase, thats why they selling a lot.adam from AI and he need huge fanbase by bigger venues and mor cool new song and album cover.

  46. Excuse if I am wrong but I also think the person is picking the creme of the crop. If we go by Idols alone. (which I know is not the standard we should go by) but only two are over 3 and a few in the two. Adam at 1.5 is the 11 best selling Idol single ever. With all the singles that are released each year I still don’t think 2 million is common even for Pop. The people you name are the cream of the crop. Eminem, Katy, Lady Gaga all are in a league by themselves. Kesha had Blah blah blah didn’t sell that well, Even Rhianna who has had 6 singles released and they keep going until a song catches on. Out of the 6 only 2 even sold more then a million. (not including the Eminem song. So I am only saying 2 million is not common and Adam is a new artist and did not do too shabby with IIHY and its still selling I think it prob will top out at 700-800K but I’ll take it. Besides the performance of IIHY is not why they may not release another single. Again Adam said may not or most likely not but did not rule out completely. I still say a single will be out for the holidays. Makes no sense not to get exposure during that period of time for the money. Having something out on the radio during that time would help with people remembering or wanting to purchase his music for the Holidays!!! IMHO Then again Christmas time is when Music shuts down for two or more weeks and only Christmas music is played right. Oh jeez now I don’t know. Maybe they will wait until the freeze is over and release a single in January from the new Album. Argh!!!!!

  47. I think you’re essentially saying the same thing as everyone else. The key phrase is “big hits”. Everybody agrees that big hits regularly sell over 2 million. We’re just saying that a regular old hit will sell like 1 mil or better.

I don’t know but I find this funny a regular old hit…..There not as common either comparatively to the amount of singles released each year IMHO

  48. The monster hits are selling 3-4 million. But anything that goes platinum is def a hit single. It’s too early to say where IIHY ends up. It did well to break into the teens on Pop but the downloads have underperformed.

Re the comments on Daughtry. He makes what’s called “flyover rock” which isn’t exactly the cool kind so he never did/does get much critical acclaim. His kind of music isn’t hot on Pop either but I’m hoping September does well. So far, it’s off to a good start.

I want September to do well because Pop radio is so boring these days. No insult to Dr. Luke but I need to hear something on the radio besides Katy Perry and Ke$ha type music.

I think touring will be Adam’s bread and butter so I guess a rushed album in the spring makes some sense. Although usually they wait at least 2 years before the 2nd album.

  49. ross:
I assumed videos stayed on the countdown until they weren’t in the Top 20 any more. Isn’t that why we vote? I guess it’s up to VH1, after all, not the voters.

I agree, Ross. Seems downright un-American, doesn’t it?

  50. I think touring will be Adam’s bread and butter so I guess a rushed album in the spring makes some sense. Although usually they wait at least 2 years before the 2nd album.

Well if he is mixing ole 70’s rock with 80 Glam mixing with today’s sound then putting out an album a year to tour every year is staying in line with the spirit of those times. I remember when artist put out 2 or 3 albums a year. Seriously. Ok I was 3 but it did happen. (No I didn’t wind up the record player to play it)

  51. I don’t know but I find this funny a regular old hit…..There not as common either comparatively to the amount of singles released each year IMHO

LOL. I was just trying to find a way to say “hit but not a smash”, since she was describing smashes IMO. But I do agree that hit songs aren’t easy to get. That’s why they are called hits! :D

But I do think that the comparisons you were drawing with Blah Blah Blah and Rhianna’s songs aren’t great ones, since those songs were considered to have underperformed. In a way it kind of proves her point.

I think that a non-lead song like IIHY rarely sells more than the lead for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that they are more likely to be selling the album as well as themselves. So I don’t think that the song should sell as much as WWFM to be considered successful. The album did keep trucking along while IIHY has been out so I would say it has done a solid, if not super!spectacular!, job. Gold is still on the low side for that kind of airplay though IMO. IA when all is said and done it should top out around 700K, by the time song really does disappear from the radio (not the charts, the radio). That’s not bad.

Re the comments on Daughtry. He makes what’s called “flyover rock” which isn’t exactly the cool kind so he never did/does get much critical acclaim.

Yeah, I guess that’s it. But it feels like even Nickleback get more props. But I guess they have a much longer presence than Daughtry. Its so odd to me… very few people are going platinum anymore, and he’s doing it while managing to stay in the top half of the BB200 for over a year, despite the album not being dropped in Q4 AND that he hasn’t really had any smashes… yet its like crickets out there. LOL. But yeah, you are probably right, he’s not enough of a cool kid I guess.

  52. I want September to do well because Pop radio is so boring these days. No insult to Dr. Luke but I need to hear something on the radio besides Katy Perry and Ke$ha type music.

I so agree with you, jpfan. It would be nice if Pop cycles back around to include more pop rock & “flyover rock” lol. I really like September a lot, I like it the best of Daughtry’s 3 singles off the album; I’m excited it’s doing so well so far. I wish he got more love & respect, too. He deserves it. (btw I do not like Nickleback but do like Daughtry).

  53. (No I didn’t wind up the record player to play it)

Yeah that’s what the housebroken trained Dinosaurs were for

  54. that he hasn’t really had any smashes… yet its like crickets out there. LOL

Daughtry never really had much media even in the beginning. He came off a huge season of Idol but the mega success of his album was kind of a surprise. No one outside of the Top 2 had ever had much success. He’s not what Pop is into and he’s not a critical darling.

I think they”ll be performing on the first week of DWTS. That hopefully will give the song some buzz. I’m almost positive DWTS will take from Idol as the #1 show on TV this season.

  59. I disagree that IIHY has, in any way, “underperformed” sales-wise. Its itunes and BB hot digital songs ranking has consistently been higher than its BB airplay rank. In other words, the songs that have been selling more are generally being played more and have higher AI. It has actually been selling pretty darn well for its airplay rank.

OHP didn’t play iihy last nite for the first time in weeks. Kept IIHY from ending the week at #16 on the pop chart (it would have been #16 if OHP had played.) Oh well, dems the breaks as they say.

  60. Actual real album numbers (not rounded off). I had no idea SuBo’s album was still on the BB200.

    35 34 10 If I Had You, Adam Lambert 39,147 7 36,701 419,701

And as pertaining to yesterday’s convo about hit singles, I’ll try to make a list of all the hit pop songs and their totals a little later. But suffice it to say that the vast majority of popular songs do seem to be crossing at least a million or are on track to do so. If not, they are 2 or 3rd singles and have albums that are selling well, for the most part.

  62. 35 34 10 If I Had You, Adam Lambert 39,147 7 36,701 419,701

This must include remixes, too. I think 412K is from album version.

I pulled from this week’s top 75 digital songs chart. I listed them in order of total sales.

Generally if you see a double digit sales decrease the song is on its way out or it is coming off a week where the artist had a high profile TV performance.

No. of weeks on chart/Name/Artist/percent change from last week/total sales so far

    01 02 08 Just The Way You Are, Bruno Mars 208,637 19 174,703 956,561

    Otherwise great job.

  66. Thanks jpfan! I updated.

Its always easier for me to comprehend the charts this way. I figured it was time I made the effort to put it in order myself. ;)

  67. what is interesting about the list of platinum singles is that the vast majority of them have received a ton of rhythmic play in addition to pop play (i think the only exceptions are HSS and NYN, which were huge hac, ac and/or country hits as well)…..that rhythmic play brings in millions and millions of additional AI — and of course most of the songs on the platinum list were also top 10 on the pop chart as well. The pop chart these days is practically identical to the rhythmic chart. I hope that someday it swings back to be a better mix of genres.

  68. It is to Kris’s and Adam’s credit that they have had their singles sell more than 1.5 million copies without LLWD or WWFM showing up on the rhythmic charts or getting very much play on rhythmic radio stations (i believe both songs got some spins on rhythmic stations, but probably a negligable # when compared to most other recent singles that’ve sold 1.5+ million)

  69. Well to be fair those numbers were pulled from the current top 75 digital sales. When you look at the full top 200 chart, there are a decent amount of non-rhythmic leaning million plus sellers on there, most of them lead singles that blew up big on another format and crossed over. Of course rhythmic songs rule at the moment, but other songs cross the threshold with some regularity.

  70. Thanks for putting together that list of single for the year and how many sold. Ok its now Sept 2010 I think this proves my point yesterday or the day before. selling 2 million or more for a single is not all the common and not easy at all. So Happy with how IIHY I still maintain that it may go Platinum.

  71. BTW I also think Kris and even Adam need to do some corroborating on there next singles. It seems that the new artist that have done this are the ones who took off. Look Kesha, Bieber, Nikki M, Bruno Mars, They all did it.

  72. Just for reference, here are the top selling digital songs, compiled here in Pulse –

    49. Colbie Caillat – Bubbly – 3,243,326
    50. Avril Lavigne – Girlfriend – 3,153,206
    51. Sara Bareilles – Love Song – 3,149,158
    52. Eminem Featuring Rihanna – Love The Way You Lie – 3,147,322
    53. Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown – No Air – 3,142,859
    54. Chris Brown – Forever – 3,079,000
    55. Carrie Underwood – Before He Cheats – 3,076,000
    56. Britney Spears – Womanizer – 3,045,000
    57. Rihanna – Don’t Stop the Music – 3,017,000
    58. Black Eyed Peas – Imma Be- 3,007,307
    59. Daniel Powter – Bad Day – 3,000,000+
    60. Miley Cyrus – The Climb – 3,000,000+
    61. Akon – Smack That – 3,000,000+

To put things into perspective, Jordin doesn’t even make the Top 50 in that list. Daughtry can make the Top 50 if sales of different versions of “It’s Not Over” get combined (2.1 million for one version, other version(s) at least 1.1 million), but then once we do that, other songs might make the list as well and others might have greater sales.

  73. Now if we assume IIHY is going platinum when it hasn’t gone gold yet, we can probably assume that alot of the songs that are already gold and still selling well will also go platinum. That means that 1/2 the songs in the top 75 will eventually go platinum. So maybe getting a platinum hit is getting easier than it used to be. ;) I see 1/3 of the songs on the chart already at platinum or headed there very soon.

I even see 16 songs that have gone double platinum (or better) or have the potential to. So even that doesn’t seem as tough as it used to. And I’m being very conservative (only counting songs at 1,800K and over) since it’s possible that even more songs on the chart have the potential to go double plat.
