Today’s thread are brought to you by the numbers 5, 7 and 2.4M.
Rihanna’s “Work” featuring Drake tops the Hot 100 for a 9th week proving that actual song-writing and annunciation mean nothing. The song is dropping on all fronts, but its streaming keeps it at the top of the chart. Rihanna pushes past the Beatles to be the sole owner of the second longest time spent at number 1 (60 weeks – the longest is Mariah Carey at 79 weeks). She also pushes the non-American at the top of the Hot 100 record to 41 weeks.
Number 2, and possibly to break that non-American record is Designer’s “Panda”. Kayne West brought it to attention by sampling it and now it too is a streaming nightmare. 28.5M streams, 87K in sales and 34M AI. Danish group Lukas Graham may have to settle for the longest run at number 2 and never to hit 1 with their “7 years”. It’s third this week, but will likely be second next week. It tops the sales chart and is making a run for the top of the airplay chart, but streaming means everything these days. Meghan Trainor’s “No” is 4th, Mike Posner’s “I took a Pill in Ibiza” is 6th, DNCE’s “Cake by the Ocean” is 9th (who would have thought when the Jonas brothers broke up that Nick would be a Pop staple and Joe would be having success with a euro-tinged pop confection?) and G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha’s “Me, Myself & I” is 10th.
X-Factor has two representatives in the top 10 of the Hot 100. Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” continues to be a success at 5th and Fifth Harmony hits a new high with “Work From Home” rising to 7th. “Work from Home” was the most played music video on youtube yesterday.
Finally, Bieber makes chart history by finally breaking the record for the longest time in the top 10 of the Hot 100 since debut. Idol Judge Nikki Minaj set the record at 21 weeks with “Starship” and Voice Judge Adam Levine went on to tie it with Maroon 5’s “Sugar”. Justin Bieber also tied it with his first two singles from “Purpose” – “What Do You Mean” and “Sorry”. He finally broke it with “Love Yourself” having spent 22 weeks in the top 10 since its debut.
One other bit of news from X-Factor is about Zayn’s former band One Direction. Turns out the lads are some of the most generous celebrities in the UK. Elton John tops the list, but One Direction is on there at 10th with $2.4M in donations. The list is a combination of musical artists (Elton John, Coldplay, Ringo Starr, Brian May), writers (JK Rowling, Martin Lewis), athletes (David Beckham, Rory McIlroy and Colin Montgomerie).
