The Voice 28 Max Chambers: Young Singer Nabs The First Mic Drop Button

Last week, we got our first teaser of the Season 28 knockouts of The Voice with an episode that mixed battles and knockouts, and now this week, in a one-hour episode, Michael Bublé awarded his mic drop to 14 year-old singer Max Chambers. (Read our Recap)

The mic drop is a new twist for the Knockouts which no longer have steals or saves in them. It allows each coach to hit their button for one singer to compete for a performance at the Rose Bowl parade.

Max Chambers was paired with the other Max on Michael’s team. Max Cooper III. Max Chambers is a confident singer, sharing with Max Cooper that he isn’t really nervous about any spots in his song heading into rehearsal.

“The more you play the better your chops are going to be”

At home, he lives the life of a regular kid, but he really wants to win this round. For his song, he chose “Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing” by Stevie Wonder. Zac Brown, Michael’s mega mentor for the round noted, “Max’s voice and his control is so advanced and so beyond, he could teach me how to sing.” Zac and Michael joked about not being nearly as good as Max at the age of 14. They advised him to sell the performance more. “The more you play, the better your chops are going to be,” Zac said. His partner also seemed wowed by his talent.

Before Max Chambers takes the stage, Max Cooper III delivered a very artistic and well sung version of DJO’s “End of the Beginning.” When Max Chambers then took the stage, he opened the song acapella showcasing his ability to hit runs with ease. It started beautifully. It’s his best performance to date as he was a bit raw in his first performances, but maybe it was just nerves. He also made the song his own at certain points. As the tempo sped up, he did miss a couple of runs as well go slightly off tune But the performance is ambitious and very impressive. To take on a difficult song and do it even remotely well is a feat in itself.

Snoop Dogg stated, “The way you took that Stevie Wonder song, and put your own ballad on it, a star is born.” Niall Horan said, “It is in your bones to be on stage.” Reba McEntire asked him if he picked the song. He did. She responded, “Why would you do that!” and added, because “you can sing it.” She would go with Max Chambers. His own coach Michael told him, “You chose an incredibly difficult song; you sing it with wisdom beyond your years.” Ultimately, Michael chose Max Chambers as the winner and also hit his mic drop button. He thinks Max could win it all.

The other showdown on Monday night that featured two strong performances was Team Niall’s Aiden Ross who tackled and did a solid job on what is becoming an overdone song (When The Party’s Over” by Billie Eilish) beating Liam Von Elbe who also turned in a very strong performance of “Over My Head (Cable Car),” a refreshing hit song choice that has rarely been covered on singing competitions.
