Now that the American Idols Live tour has ended, Tim Urban has wasted no time getting to work on his music.

He’s been in a Denton, TX  studio this week laying down tracks for a 6 song EP. Recording engineer, Gregg Dunham, posted on his website,

This week I was fortunate to work with Tim Urban (American Idol). We tracked a 6 song EP that I will also be mixing. So all of you pop fans get ready. Musicians on this project were – dlo, Larry Leicht, Devin Dean, Colin Edge and Arlington Jones. All killer musicians and all around great guys. I’ll post some pic’s later.

Tim has been tweeting updates to his fans all week:

Sept 13: “In the studio today! Just finished the first two tracks! I’m crazy excited about it!…Having so much fun recording!”

Sept 14: “In the studio with @dlo9 @devdean13 and @gregdunham cleaning up the tracks from yesterday! They’re sounding crazy good!”

“Last day at this studio! Can’t believe it’s so close to being finished!”

“Great day of relaxing and getting ready to record the vocals tomorrow! I’m getting crazy pumped for it!”

Kudos to Tim for getting straight to work.   Looks like there will be new music sooner rather than later…

  1. Tim is a really sweet, good looking, charismatic kid. My daughter loves him so we may buy his songs for her. I hope he will go into acting too since he really seems to have the personality for it.

  2. Who is going to release it? Is Tim going to do this himself — sort of along the lines of what Anoop is doing with his music?

  3. Why isn’t he auditioning for some tv roles. I thought that even he agreed that that should be his career path. Maybe releasing an EP will work for him, I remember a lot of people expected Kelly Pickler to become a tv personality, but her first album did well, even though some labeled it a novelty album, and she’s made a lot of money touring with Taylor Swift.

  4. I definitely see Tim as a Slashie: an actor SLASH singer SLASH personality. He could go that route quite easily. He seems perfect for being a special correspondant or guest contributor or host or something. Very Access Hollywood or E! News, and I mean that in a good way. Someone’s got to deliver that entertainment dish, right?

He would be perfect in a Partridge Family remake as Keith – he doesn’t have David Cassidy’s chops but the perfect personality/looks for it. Or build a new musical family sitcom around him – anybody wanna help me develop it? ;)

  6. I might get killed here, but I found something about his phrasing interesting. He also stayed mostly on key.
So, add his looks and personality, and he could make a living in the entertainment industry.

You won’t catch anything from me for saying that. While I don’t know that Tim will have a massive success in music, he was pleasant enough to listen to. I might actually check out what he does although I don’t know if it’ll be my cup of tea. But still, I wasn’t one of the ones constantly slamming Tim – I thought he got an awful lot of overly harsh criticism.

    Not from me either.
He’s a good kid, so what if he is not a great singer, he did the best he could.
The judges must think it was funny the way they ganging up on him.
And how insulting was Randy saying that he had to judge Tim in his own scale. Very demeaning.
I really hope that he makes something out of his time in Idol. Good for him for doing this.

Tweet from Tim today, sorry not sure how to make the quote thingys:(

  10. 2nd week of November? Oh he might want to re-think that. His EP is gonna get buried by all the slew of releases from big name people that drop in November

  11. Simon did the exact same thing on UK X-Factor with the Jedward twins. He said if he had to judge them, he would judge them on planet jedward and it was actually pretty good … of course he turns around a few months later and slams Randy for doing the exact same thing.

  12. Why isn’t he auditioning for some tv roles. I thought that even he agreed that that should be his career path.

There’s no reason Tim can’t do both. It happens all the time. The more Tim and all Idol contestants diversify their options, the more they make themselves viable artists.

  13. calvinhobbes, that’s not really how it went. Simon didn’t think Jedward’s bizarre act deserved to continue while he felt Tim was good enough he didn’t need to be judged by some other standard. Tim was on pitch, unlike the twins, for example.

I like Tim, I hope he pursues opportunities that come his way, acting included. I’m glad he’s putting out an EP on his own because I enjoyed his voice.

As a fan of Anthony Fedorov, Season 4, I wish he’d put out an EP. Unfortunately his fans can only hear him on stage.
